  • This is my review of the Viltrox 56mm f1.4 lens on the Fuji XT4. An 84mm f2.1 full frame equivalent. How does it perform? Is it a good b-roll lens for slow mo? A good studio lens for a more magical talking head look? How's the autofocus and stabilization? How does it do for photography? Oh we'll test it all :)

      Has anyone else noticed that apple has managed to convince the apple sheep brigade that an F2.2 aperture is faster than an F2.0 aperture lol 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️. There is all these big tech channels, apple channels going oh yes apple put the faster f2.2 telephoto lens on the iPhone 12promax... I'm like no idiots f2.2 is slower/let's in less light than f2.0!!. It's amazing apple says something they just Beleive it even these "tech expert channels" obviously not very tech knowledgeable at all lol. There like oh the 12promax has a bigger telephoto sensor.. I'm like ya but they paired it with the worse slowly lens so it totally negates the bigger sensor because the lens let's in less light than the faster lens with a smaller sensor on the smaller 12pro!. Apple is just so anti consumer it's unbelieve and apple sheep are dumb lol.

    The Toneh doesn't change with crop factor, but your face has to be further back from the lens to achieve the same framing, and when the subject is further from the lens, the Toneh decreases. Toneh the namesake of Toneh explained it rather well once.

      @Gap In a real world situation where you are in a tight space, even f/2.8 on full frame won't give you any toneh.
      You would need f/1.2 or f/0.95 to get any toneh in a small office interview.
      Environment where the subject is in matters far more than sensor or aperture size. At least for what I do.

    To answer your question about the crop factor and blurry background
    It's all about being relative to a full frame setup;
    As you increase focal length with the same aperture, the iris size should increase. But when you crop in it doesn't, so an 50mm f2 would have an iris of 25mm, an 85mm f2 would have an iris 42.5mm.
    This should make it easier to understand: th-cam.com/video/v_rTNxOIdoA/w-d-xo.html

    • @thatcherfreeman
      @thatcherfreeman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If before the crop, the bokeh balls are as big as his head, then after cropping without moving the camera or changing the lens, obviously that relationship between the bokeh size and the size of Kasey's head is unchanged.

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thatcherfreeman Yes, but he's asking about the effective aperture value changing. He's saying the 56mm f1.4 should be an equivalent 84mm f1.4 not an 84mm f2.1, so it should produce the same depth of field as an 85mm f1.4 ... except that isn't the case because a 56mm f1.4 has an iris opening of around 40mm - cropping in the angle of view reduces to that of an 84mm lens but the iris doesn't increase in size.
      A lenses 'f' number is the ratio of focal length to iris size - so an effective 84mm focal length with a 40mm iris opening gives an 'f' ratio of 2.1
      If you have a constant aperture zoom lens like an f2.8, as you zoom in at the same aperture the size of the bokeh balls would increase, not stay the same like you see with cropping in

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Pulse Dial yes the maths isn't an exact in terms of actual iris size, however it's the principal that we're talking about
      A longer focal length with the same aperture value gives a shallower depth of field because the iris opening is larger, but if you just crop into a shorter focal length then you narrow your angle of view without enlarging the iris, so you get the same effective look as a longer focal length lens that has a smaller aperture ratio

    • @BlackwaterAquatics
      @BlackwaterAquatics 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Pulse Dial hes right dude, the f stop on crop sensor changes the amount of toneh because realistically people step back to get the subject in frame and when they do so the compression changes but the size of the iris does not.
      Most phone camera have f1.6 to 1.8 do they even have any Toneh?
      Think about it.

    If you can count on anything from Viltrox it's updating their firmware to improve auto focus. Since this video Viltrox has updated the 56mm firmware 3 times so far. One of those were directly addressing the AF.
    My copy I purchased new came with the AF firmware already installed so I can't speak to earlier performance but with the updated firmware on the x-s10 it does awesome. I've got the 50mm/f2 and can't tell any AF difference. The extra toneh is noticeable enough that I'm probably going to sell the 50mm since they're so close in focal range.

    When you crop let's say 1.5x on a 50mm 2 lens, it has the perspective of a 75mm 3. It zooms in(that is what a crop does) toneh looks the same.
    But if you want the same framing you will have to move the camera back further which moves the focus point further away and thereby reducing toneh.
    The closer you are to the lens and the further the background is away(maxing out at infinity) the more toneh you get, this is also what forces macro people to stop down to the point of diffraction or focus stack.
    This is also what made the toneh lake video so painful, because he was very close while the background without much color detail was at infinity(and the autofocus and breathing of course)

      He meant the conversion of equivalent f stop number.. a 1.4 full frame lens is 1.4 on a crop sensor.. it's like cropping in full frame image to apsc size.. not considering reframing.. even the light amount is same just missing those extra outside light and image portion.. if we take a full frame camera and apsc camera align the sensor position(the sensor marker on top of camera) in the same position and same lens same setting and take photos of same subject in same distance, it will look like a cropped image of full frame without any change in exposure, dof .. because the flange distance, lens and distance is same.. the only change is the field of view because of crop.. a 35mm will the equivalent fov of a 50mm lens but not equivalent to 50mm focal length, nor does it covert in to a f2.1 lens because the dof will be same the compression will b same .. yes it will change if we try to reframe to match the full framefov because of repositioning and change in subject to sensor distance, that will effectively increase dof but again not necessarily equivalent to f2.1 or ay other value it ill be just like a 1.4 lens perform at that same distance on a full frame camera :)

    Yep, the toneh doesn't change just because there's a crop and the logic behind it is exactly as you said. That's why you only need like f5.6 for a telephoto lenses to get a lot of toneh - you're so "cropped in" that's it's enough to completely blur everything in the background behind the subject.

    • @k1k13004

      @@k1k13004 No, that's why I put "cropped in" in quotes... The effect of using a 100mm is the same as using a 50mm and cropping the image. You get more resolution and better autofocus with the 100mm but you can get the same image with the same amount of toneh with the 50mm. Of course nobody does this but the reasoning is correct.

    • @k1k13004
      @k1k13004 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hal_wayland actually in theory that might be true. In practice it's totally wrong. So if take a program to calculate the DOF, you might get a similar DOF when you have a 50 and when you stepback with a 100. In practice the blurry part is SOOOO different that it's not even comparable. I have the xf200, xf56, the macro and few more.
      If I take a picture with the kit lense 18-55 at 55mm f4 from chest to head, the BG only 2 meters away is not in focus but it's not blurry.
      I step back, take my 200, set it to f4 and the same framing. It's day and night. There is nothing to compare, not only IQ , sharpness, but the DOF wich is theorically the same is actually in practice not comparable.

    Toneh doesn't change with cropped lenses, check Gerald's video about focal lengths. The thing about cropped lenses is that you need to be farther away from the subject to have the same composition than a non cropped one, so the subject "blends" more with the background; giving the illusion of less toneh.

  • @DistemperpK
    @DistemperpK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    1:49 True, it's just a crop if you compare identical lens, subject distance while changing sensor size. It gets the DOF look and perspective of a 84 mm toneh 2.1 once you try to fill your frame with your composition in the same way it would look on a FF body - means you would step back with your fuji if you wanted to match the covered field of a FF 85 mm. This stepping back increases your DOF in the same manner you would apply the crop to F-number.

    The toneh of a 56mm lens doesn't change. It's not going to have a toneh of a longer focal length lens ... unless you change your distance to the subject (because of the crop and your perception of the image). The aperture is a ratio that symbolizes hypothetical light transmission (unlike T stop), so it doesn't really affect your Toneh if you do the mathematical "equivalency" calculation, which is intended to give an impression of what the light transmission could be.

    A longer focal length has less depth of field. Thus a 56mm lens has the same depth of field regardless of sensor size; however, a 56mm lens has a larger depth of field than an 84mm. So with a 56mm lens on an APSC camera you get the same field of view as an 84mm lens on a full frame camera, but still have the larger depth of field of a 56mm lens.

    Oh one formula for toneh comparability that actually works, take actual focal length in mm and divide by actual aperture. Sensor size makes no difference, do not use any crop factors. An 33mm / 1.4= 23.6 bluritude vs 200m / 4.0= 50 bluritude. The focus of the light that passes through the lens is not effected by whatever sensor size it hits on the other end.

    For bokeh between FF and Apsc, your thinking crop in post vs crop of the sensor before the image is captured (reality).

  • @fedearbelaez4912
    @fedearbelaez4912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The aperture doesn't multiply by the crop factor, yo get the same amount of light as a full frame camera. The reduction of depth of field is due to you getting the toneh of a 35mm 1.4 lens, but with a crop equivalent to the angle of view of a 52mm lens. The wider the lens, the less toneh you get from the same f-stop.

    My guess as to why the face tracking doesn't work when you have it wide open so your face doesn't even look like a face all bokehed like that. The reason that the viltrox does this to you is that it is a long lens with a wide aperature. The fuji lenses you use have smaller apertures and wider focal lengths. Not that you would want to but if you switch from face tracking to a smaller focus zone you may find that it finds you better. Or if you stop it down a bit.

      there is no reason to expect toneh on a wide lense. Except if you want to take a tight shot of your nose and get your eyes a bit blurry on the background (because the minimal focus distance allows you to do that).

    If you want to take pictures of different animals. Just visit your local zoo, where you can see. If the lense and or camera has trouble. Locking onto the animals due to them. Having to focus through the bars or glass.

    Tony factor doesn't change because of the crop. Depth of field is calculated as twice the distance to subject squared x the acceptable circle of confusion size x aperture, all divided by focal length squared. So a Viltrox 33 f/1.4 will give you the same depth of field on any sensor as long as all the other factors remain the same (i.e., you don't back up to get yourself framed the same, etc.).

  • @westwrd82
    @westwrd82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Short answer the 2.1 is a measure of light let in not depth of field.

    The cropping does not affect the toneh. That said, the 50mm T1.8 full frame would have the same toneh as a 50mm T1.8 micro four loser lens if you are shooting at the same distance. However, the micro four loser would have a tighter framing due to the crop. So, if you want the similar framing between the both, you need to be further away from the camera on the micro four loser system. And that further distance affect the toneh. Therefore, even both lenses having same focal length and same tony value, the one with crop would always have less toneh in actual usage.

      Here's the thing.... you own the Xt4 but not, seemingly a Sony... WHY?!?! I mean, obviously we all actually like being left overnight at the (adult) babysitter's house, but no one wants mac n cheese. Why are you living with the mac n cheese instead of Sony??!! I need real info on this before I buy.

    I think for studio recording you should choose the focus box to be in the center where your head is and pick 'Area' ,not Multi AF in video mode .Maybe ,with that option and Face detection ON ,Fuji won't hunt when you move backwards .So ,when the face detection box looses you, the focus box will quickly track you without much of a breathing.
