    After Autocar's head-to-head video we've decided the Range Rover is more comfortable and refined, but not as quick on the road as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. But how quick are these uber-4x4s when faced with a very wet and slippery grass bank. Can the Range Rover's off-road technology defeat the power of the Porsche? Steve Sutcliffe sees which 4x4 can slither its way to victory.
    Autocar, the world's leading motoring magazine and website, delivers industry-leading news, the most in-depth car reviews and opinion from our team of experts. Our presenters include some of the world's top motoring journalists who have unrivalled access to the world's fastest, rarest, most exotic and most exciting cars on some of the world's best roads and race tracks.
    Can a supercar beat a superbike? Can a Audi A1 outrun a Nissan GT-R on a wet circuit? Can a Porsche 911 slay a Corvette on the drag strip? Autocar pitches the giants of the performance car world against each other to deliver the all-important verdict.

    The Porsche driver was deliberately stirring the Porsche in the wrong direction instead of the direction the land rover was skating into. Second deliberate attempt to make Porsche a loser against Land Rover was; if you notice at the end; the diver slammed into the brake when he notices the Porsche moving. Just put me into the Porsche’s driver seat and you can see clear the Porsche going up easily!

      They both have the power and the torque. Contrary to what some people may think a 4x4 system is not that much different from one car to another on these big luxurious suvs they both locking diffs and can send power to right wheels when needed so it all boils down to one thing. How do you put all that power down to the road? TYRES. I am surprised the presenter gave us all those stats apart from the one that matters. He did not mention what tyres they were using. If they were using tyres from same manufacturer with same spec then fair enough range rover wins but if they are different then test kind of inconclusive

      correct but it might be the case that the range beats the porsche offroad but a porsche is still a porsche and rover is still a rover everyone knows what that means.brand image set aside a brit journalist should never never do a review for a brit car it should lacks credibility right off the bat same goes for americans reviewing american cars or german reviewing german cars especially when they are doing a comparison with a foreign car . it just doesnt make any sense.

    • @samboris9094
      @samboris9094 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree; the Brits are completely bias to Porsche; the same person drove them both up and they both easily went up; why is it that all of a sudden Porsche can't go up the same way it did in the first test? The guy behind the Porsche's wheels should be ashamed of himself!

  • @sagonsa1128
    @sagonsa1128 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Let me tell you a very important point about off road tests.Most important part is TIRES. Porsche is using sports 21 low profile summer tires which is deadly for off road while Range Rover is using all season higher profile with smaller wheels.So if you are really performing a fare test put same tires and wheels(in size) on both cars and try it! It seems you are trying to show something which you like yourself :-) something like nationality of cars or passion on British cars.

    • @sfrerku
      @sfrerku 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      smaller wheels means less contact, less traction...it's basic physics...so think better before trying to make a point xD

    • @michalgondolewski8709
      @michalgondolewski8709 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sfrerku I know your response is years old but you are wrong when applying those rules to off road use. A higher tire profile and softer rubber (or less tire pressure) give an advantage off road. A wide tire will have more trouble clearing the mud and once the shallow tread is clogged up the car will skid like on skates. This is why off road tires are usually narrower and have higher tread. Have you ever seen tally car tires? They are narrow and have high sidewalls. So Range Rover here has a clear advantage. It’s been fitted with 20 inch wheels with a taller sidewall tires, whereas the Cayenne is wearing the largest possible at the time 21 inch wheel with a low profile performance tire.
      What you are saying is only correct on the road, and the Cayenne will outperform the Range Rover on the road every time.

  • @ShaunJW1
    @ShaunJW1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    This is the second time Autocar has compared a Range Rover's off road capability to the Porsche. First here, and then with the Sport. Both times the "off-road" course was a bit of mud. I'm sorry there is more to off road riding then a bit off mud...

    • @sherlockholmes4637
      @sherlockholmes4637 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You gotta consider the cost of these cars. For the price of a cayenne turbo you could have 2 top of the range land cruisers, No one is going to crash about in a cayenne when they can get much better results for half the price. The real reason people buy these fancy 4x4's is because they freak about about kids safety, they like having a big boot, they like being able to drive over curbs and speed bumps, crossing a field really is about the most these cars would do. The range rover off road performance is largely a marketing tool so they can claim they have the best 4x4 in the world, and it gives their discovery/defender 4x4s some credence to the customers who are much more likely to go off roading.

  • @zackirstein9233
    @zackirstein9233 10 ปีที่แล้ว +131

    Firstly that was the most biased review I have ever watched! What Steve says at 1:03 is so biased, he makes out that the Range Rover is perfect and the most luxurious and refined car ever and that the Porsche is shit apart from it's speed! The Porsche has an amazing, and sporty interior with a better and more responsive centre console, also the suspension can be soft if you change the PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) setting to Comfort. So Steve the Range Rover is not '"much more accomplished.'"
    Now, when you went off road in the Range Rover you clearly used the All Terrain Response 2 and manually selected Mud Ruts, which good as it locks the front, centre and read differential. However when you went in the Porsche you did lock the front, centre and rear differential at 3:34 but just before you started to drive at 3:45 you can see that only the centre and rear differentials are locked since the front differential lock button is not lit up. You cheat and lie there for giving the Porsche and unfair disadvantage.
    Another point is that when you drive up the hill in the Range Rover you leave muddy slippery tracks 3:03, which you then deliberately drive the Porsche into 3:53 which makes it harder to climb as well as not having the front differential locked. Then you gloat that Range Rover is amazing and only struggles for '"half a second"' 4:12 which is a lie as it struggles for grip from 2:57 to 3:04 which is seven seconds.
    Finally when you race them together you give the Porsche disadvantages and the Range Rover advantages. Firstly the Range Rover is approximately 1.5 metres in front of the Porsche which is unfair and cheating 4:49. Secondly the man driving the Porsche does a bad start compared to Steve has he flaws it, making the Porsche's wheels spin for longer 4:49. Thirdly the Porsche is driven on the wet and slippery mud for longer as the Range Rover is closer to the grass. Fourthly the Porsche driver accelerates into the muddy and slippier tracks so has far less traction than the Range Rover which drives up the grass 4:52. Fifthly Steve drives the Range Rover across the side of the field which a far less steep gradient 5:08 whereas the Porsche driver goes straight. Sixthly whenever Porsche driver accelerates in the patch of mud and edges forward the driver slams the breaks on and stops it moving 5:13 again unfair. Lastly I think that the Porsche driver didn't turn any differentials on, so the Range Rover would win, because at 5:14 the front wheels aren't moving whereas the rear are, this again happens 5:51. This would not be possible if the centre differential lock was on.
    Last of all Steve exclaims that the Range Rover is better on road which it clearly isn't has it's far heavier, has a far slower top speed and 0-60 time, has far less mpg, emits more co2 and lastly is larger so more difficult to park and maneuver.
    Autocar I hope you read this comment as it has taken me time to write it and get evidence for my points. This is a fair and accurate comment which I do not want you to take harshly. This is simply what I have seen and critiqued. I am still subscribed to your channel.

    Actually just watched it again and contrary to what AC were trying to achieve, ergo allow the RR win over the Porsche by disadvantaging the Cayenne deliberately it has made me want the Porsche over the RR. When you have to make a point to show one better than the other by unfair advantage you are actually doing the RR a dis-service. If I were RR I would be annoyed by this test because it looks as if the only way RR can beat the Porsche is to be unfair to the Porsche, hence the Porsche is probably the better car. We can't win fairly so we will cheat. If I were driving the Porsche I would have done as the RR did, turn the wheels down hill got some motion, slide down to the less steep slope and then gun it up the less steep part of the hill.

    As usual the English are cheating as in the single runs both cars went up the same part of the hill while in the comparison they put the Porsche in trajectory with the steeper part of the hill and the Range on the less steep side (in fact Porsche got stuck while Range drifted 30meters to the right untill it got to a mildly steep section and went up).
    Exchanging car positions probably would have given opposite results judging on how both cars we badly slipping around.

    I agree that this was hardly a tough off road test but maybe that was intended to give the Porsche a chance (think about that before you accuse the reviewer of bias.) In a real off road challenge with steep drops, deep water, massive rocks and obstacles, the Porsche would have been totally humiliated.

      Look at videos of the cayenne off road, it will be a big surprise for you!
      The cayenne is very very very good at off road, and it can compete with Range Rover easily.

    • @justinneill5003
      @justinneill5003 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      OK, I've spent the last hour trolling through Cayenne reviews and off-road comparisons with the Range Rover Sport, and I will admit to being quite surprised at what the Cayenne can do off road. I didn't see any reviews that suggested it was better than the RR but some had them pretty close and on a typical off road course there was nothing to separate them. However, the majority still gave the off-road edge to the RR and bear in mind that this was the RR sport which is a more road focused variant. All the tests I could find online seem to be on forest tracks, steep hills and deep water but nothing with proper obstacles. I've yet to see a Cayenne being put through the most extreme off road tests that Range Rovers are subjected to. The Cayenne surprised me, it does perform well off road but nobody could seriously suggest that it competes with the RR. For one thing, the adjustable air suspension doesn't give the same ground clearance as the RR system and also the Traction Management system only offers 3 terrain options whereas the RR Terrain Response system offers 5. The latest generation Cayenne also doesn't have a dual transfer case I'm not knocking it, in most off road situations it would be excellent and it obviously wins on road, but for sheer off road ability Land Rover need not worry.

      Neil Justin My dad owns a Cayenne, and I wouldn't call it very brilliant off road wise. Granted, it's actually more capable than being just a sporty SUV, but small things such as a low exhaust pipe wouldn't really help when you need to do some rock crawling. The Range Rover fares much better in that respect...

    • @KHGuitarFreak1988
      @KHGuitarFreak1988 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neil Justin Also, my dad's Cayenne comes with those 21 inch rims with Pirelli SUV Zeros. No way are they made for offroading. Very much track/road biased. The sidewalls are very soft, which can lead to punctures or bulging when offroading...

      "You sir are just a fanboy...I like porsche, in fact I love everything that has to do with Germany since I'm half german...but let porsche be were they belong, on the road...and let Land Rovers be where they belong, where there are NO roads...they didn't get the fame of being the best 4x4's for nothing you know? Put offroad tires to both the Cayenne and the RR, and put them in a real offroad test, not this lame thing, and you'll see. Also, I'm quite sure everything else this man said about the comfort and luxuriousness (if that's a word) of the RR over the porsche is true...there is just NO other SUV as luxurious and equiped as a RR...and it probably won't be either in the future"

  • @deutschland2680
    @deutschland2680 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    First of all any "car expert" that pronounces it Porsch instead of Porsche (ProshUH) is automatically discredited. Second of all, when the Porsche got "stuck" and couldn't climb the hill the 2nd time it was clearly about 10 feet behind the Range Rover and in 3 feet of mud, where as the Rover was half way in the grass to start. Also, you can have the most powerful vehicle in the world but it all boils down to the tires and how much grip it has. A Ford Focus could beat both of those cars if it were fitted with better gripping tires.

      You seem very keen to correct other people, so as this was a German V English car test - I thought it worth pointing out that you too needed 'correcting'. If it has been a German V American car, I would have understood the use of American. And by the way, it is " you're " ... not " your ". A common mistake these days unfortunately.
      You never know, some people might get a little peeved at being 'corrected'. Don't worry about it - it's just my English humour. You see, over here, no one cares if you say Porsch. We all know what know what he means.

      and also if you are a lover of cars (petrol head) then it shouldnt matter where a car is from or how you say it, all that should matter is that if that car is any good or not. and not being funny but in this case the range rover will chew and spit out the porsche in every way. looks is a personal thing admittedly but performance on and off road no one can honestly say the porsche is better.

      Well, you should try to see it with the view of a German. Germans like to compete because they have something to compete with and the Rover is a great car. It is actually not a real new car because it is still based on BMW development but good enough to wear the badge. Anyhow from our view it is funny to see that the Indians bought Jaguar and Rover. I heard that Tata is also in negotiations with Morgan and by the way, do you know that the Deutsche Bahn has also overtaken the EWS in the UK, which also operates the British Royal Train (The Train of her Majesty). People are underestimating that section of "off road" - on the face of it it just looks like wet grass, but English countryside is deceiving, it all looks lush and green on top but it's completely sodden underneath thanks to our prodigious amount of rainfall, you can see as soon as they cut through the top grass it's just pure mud. If this wasn't a serious test then both cars would have just breezed up that "wet grass" like it wasn't there, but that clearly wasn't the case.
