1:40 did it perfectly. The key is not speed in fact the opposite. You want to build that wave in front so the grill rides below the crest of the wave.

    • @joko888
      @joko888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Correct! But also a key note is that on a bunch of land rovers the air intake is not in the front. On range rovers the hood itself (none of the exterior vents) is the intake and sucks in air from the top of the engine bay. On the defender the intake is to the outside on the side. Unsure about the velar and evoque though

Most of these cars (if not all) are well capable of crossing over without difficulty, if only they were driven properly. There is absolutely no need to gun for the road, the tide simply works against you anyway. Slow and steady does the job.

Shocking how many land over drivers have NO CLUE how to drive through a water crossing.
The saying goes "as SLOW as possible, as fast as necessary".
Here is what my experienced, 4x4 enthusiast uncle taught me. When crossing water:
    1. Walk through it first to gauge the depth and terrain under the surface of the water. This is never something drivers like to do - they'd rather walk to work on the Monday while their 4x4 is getting repaired for water damage after getting stuck. In this case, the depth is known so I guess it isn't that necessary. Most landies cannot wade (drive through) water deeper than 50-90cm in stock (unmodified) form. Water deeper than the bonnet is generally a no-go.
    2. Keep a steady, moderate pace with a very gentle bow wave. This reduces the amount of water in the engine bay. Too slow and / or especially too fast and you can be assured that your entire engine and ALL the electronics inside the engine bay is under water - this is not good!
For some good examples see the blue old shape Defender (2:35), Range Rover (3:00), dark Discovery Sport (3:33) and green Discovery 2 (3:57). These have the perfect bow wave.
    A few other observations:
    - White smoke means water got into the engine, was burnt (with fuel) and turned into white water vapour. Again, this isn't good.
    - Water crossings generally are not good for vehicles. They rust and the vehicles also have diff breathers (holes that allow hot air to escape as the diffs become warm from driving) and these holes can let water in.
    - The (skoda?) driver almost getting washed away by an over eager land rover driver was pretty darn funny...
    - And then, the embarrassment of the red Velar getting towed by the all time least reliable vehicle Land Rover has ever produced - a Freelander Mark 1 - is hilarious just hilarious. I thought they only fitted recovery points to the front of Freelanders? 🤷🏻‍♂️
    - And if you're watching this, you're blessed. So am I. For MY blessings, I give ALL the glory to the Lord Jesus Christ Who is God and His Holy Ghost.
"A Land Rover will TAKE you just about anywhere in the world, but if you wanna go AND COME BACK... you need a Toyota. 😉"
Joking aside, I think Land Rover is still the best 4x4xfar.
    My favourites in order:
    Discovery 1 V8
    Discovery 2 V8
    Range Rover P38 V8
    Discovery 4 SDV6
Range Rover L322 V8 petrol or diesel
    Range Rover Sport SDV6
    ....
    The end.

I work as an instructor for Land Rover teaching perspective and current customers how to traverse terrain such a ford like this. Its amazing the amount of people think you need to smash into the water. A lot of them dont even know their vehicles have a wading feature that closes the vents on the current models and raises the vehicle to the maximum off road height this varies depending on the year it was released and model however the evoque and discovery sport only have coil suspension so wading depths for those need extra consideration. Also just because your car is heavy and can wade through a lot of water too much water and it will float. It’s great Job by the way lot of fun too and educational as there is always more than 1 way of doing it.

For people who doesn't know: don't drive fast through water, you can see that if people drive fast through water, it creates ripple, wave and or splash. Now that ripple we can see the splash direction is to the outside, but it also splashes the water to inside the engine, thus splashing, wetting and drowning the engine. But if you drive slowly it won't splash too much water to the engine.

    • @User2OO7

A truly great car built for off-road shouldn't require a special driving technique to get through water. Imagine reading the manual of your new off-road car and realizing you should be extra careful driving through a ditchful of water or else you'd ruin it 🤭 There's a reason why Toyota Landcruiser is loved across the world even by armies and terrorist groups - it's a hardy car that demands very little care.

Velar has a lower wading depth, around 250-300mm less than the more hardcore Range Rovers. That may not have helped. The full fat models have a wade depth sensing system as standard but I think it's an option on the Velar. Mind you, it seems that most owners aren't concerned with such things as numbers or reading the manual, and think they have a force field around their car. With the state of the spare parts backlog at the moment for JLR I would want to be really sure I could make it before going through that ford at the moment.

And in my case, because it's a dirt road either side of the creek, I pause for the water to run back into the creek and then I'm on my way again. Some of these (maybe all? don't know exactly which models) should have their air intakes located behind those little grilles that sit behind the front wheel arch. You'll notice, if you drive them properly through water that the bow wave at the front, gives way to a depression behind, where the water cuts significantly under this grille. However, I am not sure how much of the air path is actually sealed, so there is still some chance of getting water in there from another location. I think if its not got the little grilles the air intake is still high up on the bonnet line somewhere along the top of the front fender.
