  • I share a POV between the new 2024 MK8.5 Facelift VW Golf GTI and a 2017 MK7.5 VW Golf R. This is to highlight the differences between the different generations of Volkswagen Golf in terms of such examples as the infotainment and driving aspects of both models.

For me the mk7.5 was the perfect car, performance and practicality of actually buttons for the important things and still looks good considering its age, I hate the world of new cars with everything hidden in an oversized touch screen!

I have a mk8 r fully loaded apart from leather . Absolutely brilliant car . It’s an 23 plate and never had any gremlins in it , also never put heated wheel on by mistake .

I definitely prefer the MK7 over the newer golf. I like having all the buttons and a normal set of gauges. My wife has a Toyota GR right now and we’ve had nothing but problems with it. Eight major issues and only 7000 km. Next year, going back to a VW.

I think the Mark 8.5 GTI is the best one ever made, I owned the Mark 4, 5, 6, 7.5 and the 8. All were good cars. Anyway, the 8.5 is in respect of performance and usability the best!
    Good review, thank you!

Think I prefer the Mk8 over the 8.5. That centre screen is far too big

Is it my impression or is the interior noise (wet road noise) actually quieter on the 7.5 R than the 8.5 GTI? Your voice has the same volume and then if you skip in the video and compare, the 7.5 is better insulated. When the road was not wet in the other video, they sounded the same.

That is very well noted and thank you for sharing your thoughts. The audio is recorded on the same roads with the same microphone back to back with the same weather so it is a great comparison when it comes to road noise. I have to say it was hard to split between them both and considering the R has larger 235 section tyres with 19" inch wheels over the the GTI I would expect the R to be slightly louder. I found them very similar although the compliance, perhaps due to the extra weight of the 4WD of the R, always allows for a stable ride in the R. It is very subjective and for sure the quality of the MK7.5 is very high even more so for an older model which came out originally over 10 years ago with the MK7 🙂

What would you say is the difference between fuel consumption of a golf GTI and a golf r. Currently driving a manual Octavia vrs which is the same engine as gti and averaging 38mpg over 5k miles. I am looking at getting an auto golf r but don’t want to be fuelling up all the time.

You will see less economy in the Golf R than a GTI. It very much is subjective on how you drive. If you are seeing 38 mpg with an Octavia VRS (which weighs more than a GTI but with less power) I would say you can get into the 40-45mpg for the GTI. For the Golf R it is more like 30-35mpg again depending on your driving style. I hope this helps 😊

@@SamAustin Yes that makes a lot of sense, it’s a hard decision, I feel like if I go gti I’m buying the same car I already have with no big improvements other than auto gearbox and smaller chassis but the option to get it tuned to 300 + hp, (can get Skoda tuned to the same but don’t fancy paying £1500 for a new clutch, I also want an auto so bad). Just need to find out if I need the 4wd because it sounds quite expensive like replacing all 4 tyres at once and haldex service etc.

Haldex service is every 3 years and costs around £100. Tyres wear more evenly so the fronts last longer than a FWD car. I have found the running costs very reasonable from my 7 year ownership of my manual Golf R so I can recommend the car for sure 😊
