Great news about 17 Mach 2, I have a Anschutz 1502 chambered in it and have not shot it much because I was conserving the ammo I had.

Eric Schon idk what there like now but my pap had a savage anschutz 22 lr from 1974 paid 800$ then formit
And his freinds said he was crazy and to this day it is the most comfortable and within its capability the most accurate

Eric Schon I bought CZ 455 .22lr shooting ELEY SPORT, holds half inch at 100yds and quiet as a mouse, best hunting gun in the cupboard, my .17hmr is noisy but laser accurate at 150yds, head shoots all foxes, rim fire is great when you find the ammo that does the business!

I traded a friend a $150 scope for a mark 2 savage bolt action 17hm2 and 150 rounds of Hornady ammo about 3 years ago and it’s about a $300 gun but he couldn’t find any ammo for it but now I can get it at a local gun shop and it’s my go to for squirrel hunting

lol just now watching this. I got a Savage MKII in .17HM2 for graduation in 2015. i absolutely love it for small game! my longest shot on a rabbit was 218 yards, and a squirrel at 175ish, with a 4-12x50 scope. its a shame they arent as popular, but luckily some places in north alabama are beginning to keep ammo in stock!

I had an old wore out 10/22 when the 17 HM2 ammo came out. Boyd’s offered a conversion kit. I bought one and later customized my old 10/22 and converted it to a 10/17 HM2. It looks just like yours except it is red and has a stainless 0.920 twist fluted barrel. It has never been shot. I heard rumors of catastrophic failures with these conversions. All this, was covered up. Ammo manufacturers blamed the conversion manufacturers. The 17 HM2 ammo supply’s dried up over night. I am still waiting to see if the ammo brass has has been strengthened, or I need to spend another $500 to convert back. It makes a beautiful door stop. I worry someone may unknowably buy one and injure themselves. I also have a bolt action 17 HM2 and can easily see this caliber outselling the 22 in a few years. It is far more accurate and lethal to small game. Head shots on squirrels at 100+ yards is the norm.

  • @sportclay1

One of the problems with the mach 2 shortly after it came out there was production problems with the ammo. The cases would crack/split at the neck. Open new box of Hornady or CCI and sometimes as many as 20 cases / box had split necks. Send back and they sent replacements only to find more. There was an annealing problem with these little bottle neck cases. Ammo I have bought in the last couple of years has been trouble free. There is still some of the old stuff around. If it is old stock Hornady check the boxes carefully for split necks. The split is very fine and will certainly show up when you shoot them.

I am currently waiting on a suitable receiver for my second 10/22 17Mach2 rifle. Can't bring myself to dismember a fine shooting .22lr. So far, the first one has worked flawlessly with just the heavier bolt charging handle. I also have two Savage bolt action rifles in Mach2; a standard and a heavy barrel waiting to be sighted in. I'm glad I bought a gob of ammo before the crunch. I think they will be great for punching ground squirrels and paper.

    • @Dennisthemenace40
      @Dennisthemenace40 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The Mach 2 is under appreciated because its place is not well understood. It’ll cover about 80% of the HMR’s range for about 2/3 the cost. Factor in its lesser sound signature and you have a high performance rimfire for less cost than steel case 9mm that people have no problem buying. Once you try it, it’s easy to see its charm.

@@Dennisthemenace40 I have the CZ. Around MOA, but done to ,75 with the Eley ... which isn't made any longer.
Question. Why a round with such a small velocity difference from that of the original? I'm in CA, so I am regulated to the lead-free round. So, I no longer have a choice.

    • @-BWS-
      @-BWS- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Dennisthemenace40 thats what interests me with the 17 HM2. It is so minimal, yet so efficient. I wouldn't use it for anything beyond cottontail rabbit unless I was going for a headshot.
Its quieter than the HMR and cheaper because less materials are used, but you can still effectively take out squirrels and rabbits out to at minimum, 125 yards, but you can theoretically push it to 150 with the right ammo.

    • @Dennisthemenace40
      @Dennisthemenace40 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabe Pettinicchio
I assume your CZ is in 22LR, that is a fine rifle. With better than MOA accuracy and heavier bullets, the 22 is lethal at greater range than most are capable. That’s where the M2 fills in. With 25% more velocity than its progenitor it greatly flattens the trajectory of the CCI Stinger. The same velocity spread exists between the 30-30 and 300 Winchester Magnum. Except the M2 has a better BC than the Stinger making hits at distance much easier. As far as the lead free situation goes, Hornady makes the NTX 15.5 gr load that will get you through. I feel your pain as I too reside in this terribly mismanaged state. Sorry for my delayed response.

Hexonitrocubine puts out a shock wave at 10.6 km/s and has 2.38* the energy density of TNT. I'm not at all sure how you would make a gun that could use the full potential of such a explosive. But it does give a reasonable maximum upper bound.

    @ Tyler Snyder,
I have on my cartridge collection a custom wildcat 17 DKT which the parent cartridge case is a 32 ACP.
As for any bottle neck cartridge in a revolver is going to be problematic because upon firing the cartridge will set back do to case stretching and the cartridge case shoulder will hold it back against the revolver’s back plate restricting the cylinder from rotating. In affect locking up the revolver. This has been tried in the past and always had that problem. The 257 Winchester is a prime example which is a 357 Magnum necked down for a .257/25 caliber bullet.

My 2 cents since no one asked, The 22 needs to go the other way - 22TCM-style. 22 cal bullet in front of more powder, not a smaller cal in front of less.

I don’t know about you but if I’m shooting groups like you was at first at 50 yards I would had followed the group on my scope settings to dead center of the group then moved the target back another 50 yards. Great video as always! I really like that style of bolt action but I'm not sure that thumb hole stock is a great match for it. Just my opinion.

slipmud84 was just thinking that- fine for target shooting when you can be moving slowly and methodically, but if you were varmint hunting, i’d probably opt for a more traditional stock.

I took about 5000 squirrels last year on the farm about 700 a day, I used my HMR it getscostly. then I bought the WSM at a few more$$, Now I have a mach2 to go try. I like them to explode as we dont eat them here. different kind. If it works well it will save me 1/2 the cost.

The straight pull bolt is nice, with the exception that it doesn't stay open once pulled to the rear, seems like a bit of a hazard to me.

The only real hazard with any firearm is the owner or shooter. At the range I shoot at, the RSO's visually confirm that every shooter is behind the line and every firearm has a chamber plug before letting the firing line go cold, And no one is permitted to handle a firearm, even a cased one, on a cold firing line.

My VF Summit rifle does the same thing. It slides forward slightly, but stops at the magazine. The bolt is not physically heavy enough to even slightly nudge a round that's in the magazine. Even with an empty magazine or no magazine inserted, the bolt will not fall forward into battery.

Just think how many squirrels your grandma would have shot with a 17mach2! I have one and it used to be a little cheaper to shoot that the 17hmr but now the ammo is pretty close to the same cost as its big brother. Still a great round

Go get yourself a .17WSM and a decent scope instead of the HMR or Mach 2 if you want to have some fun at that range. I can take coyotes out to 200-300 yds easy breezy all night long.

Wonder if you'd have less horizontal stringing if you had a level on the scope... could you be tilting the rifle slightly? This exacerbates stringing as the scope is higher from the centerline of the bore.
I look at the HM2 as the perfect late season squirrel cartridge, when the leaves are down and you (and the squirrels) can see further. I have a Lilja HM2 barrel for my CZ 455 American but am going to convert my Winchester/Miroku 52B to .17 HM2.

      Fierce Firefly
Sorry to hear that. In the States, (central California anyway) HMR is much easier to find but it’s about 50% more than Mach 2. A quick search at Sportsman’s Warehouse shows 3 different choices for the Mach 2 including a lead free option.

Back before it became impossible to get the .17 Mach II was fast developing a reputation for being the most accurate cartridge ever developed. So, if ultimate accuracy is your game it might be worth checking out!

Your barrel was obviously warm when you were zeroing. Those shots were making their way back to low center, at 50. HUGE different in POI, with barrel temperature. I hate that fact! I'm a hunter, so my first shot is always a cold bore shot. So, it's usually off a hair.
