    Eli, I think your results would tighten up significantly if you would do the 10 warmer shots followed immediately by the 5 shot groups. No talking, no intro...no nada, just do the groups ASAP after the warmers. I believe that a minimum amount of heat has to be in the barrel for best groups. I've seen this over and over again here at home when I would pause for a few minutes and reset the chrono & re-set the tuner and watch the next series start off like a cold barrel shot & walk into the spot.
    Between say ... Eley Tenex & Eley Match following each other, I use one wet .17 cal. mop with Hoppes and follow with 2 dry patches (the smaller mop doesn't scrub, it wets & wipes clean pulling excess lube and powder ash from the lands and grooves). The barrel will re-season & settle down within 10 shots. Tenex is lubed with bees wax & paraffin and the Match is only paraffin lubed. You might think that's not a lot of difference in lubes but if I don't wet mop, it can take a full 20 ~ 25 shots to settle the barrel again.
    It's a good thing you and I don't live close or the wives would have a cat...we'd be on the range night & day! ;-) ... charlie

      I agree - all my ammo testing has shown that you need to get on with it after the warmer shots or the groups open up

    My CZ 457 MTR just loves Norma Tac 22......Very good groups and the rare flyer is only off 1/4-3/8 of an inch

    At 8:24 people at Ruger had a great idea. They finally addressed the "Loose Magazine" issue that had two Ruger factions fighting. The "hunters" using fast and easy swapping magazines were happy with a loose fit magazine that would drop out easy. The "Target" shooters wanted greater accuracy from a tight-fitting magazine that ensured consistent alignment & smaller shot groups on paper. It was interesting that Volquartsen engineered an aftermarket trigger assembly replacement that fixed two weaknesses of the Ruger in one assembly. They lowered the trigger pull weight AND added a tightening lever on the magazine release to cam the magazine in tighter until it was ready to be released easier by the longer, easy access lever.

    If I had to guess what went wrong with this test. First would be the cheap stock that the quality action was in, you do not put a 1,000-dollar action in a 150-dollar stock. Second would be that you should have seasoned the barrel with at least 15 rounds before shooting the first groups. Third go directly to the 5-round group after shooting the 10-round group. Forth hold all comments until the seasoning rounds and 10 round and 5 round groups are completed. The way you did this test, you showed what a quality action will do with a cheap stock and a cold bore with each ammo.

    Great video and I have a comment on something you brought up earlier in the video. The one screw connecting receiver to the stock. I found out after a lot of research and talking to old timers that the one weak point in the Ruger 10/22 Target models that they did not like free floated barrels, temperature had an effect as the barrel warmed up. I bought one of the Ruger Competition Target models with two screw connection and it made a huge difference. I’ve wondered why Volquartsen did not follow suit with the change Ruger made. Also, I noticed you only shoot lead round nose ammo, is there a reason you don’t ever shoot copper plated? Thank you very much for your time and hard work on these videos.

    I am a subscriber and 22lr ARA (factory class) bench rest shooter. You do a great job and I look forward to each new video. After watching this video, it struck a cord with me and Ruger 10/22 rifles. I have used every brand and type of ammo in this review. I have owned a number o 10/22's, both stock and highly modified. Bottom line is, fliers are a part of 10/22 ownership. Its not you, occasionally the ammo with a weak or more powerful round than the last, but the design of the 10/22. Your Volquartsen is a beautiful rifle, but it's still a 10/22 design. You can call a moose an elk, but it's still a moose. Thanks for your work.

    I have a Valquartsen SF1 stainless steel snake barrel. Manufacturers recommended the wolf target by Ely, the best for my firearm is Aguila target competition. Unbelievable accuracy.

    Hey! Greetings from Norway! The stringing you experienced with the SK std+ after using the Norma is due to the greasy lube the RWS use and the thin oil Sk use. They realy crashes. Keep up the good videos 🙂

    • @randomidiot8142
      @randomidiot8142 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My gun doesn't seem to mind the lube change. Wolf to SK and the second best of ten groups was the first group with the best being the 8th.
      Ymmv, it's all back magic.

  • @vakennels
    @vakennels ปีที่แล้ว

    I shoot the SK standard plus in my Kidd 10/22. It holds slightly less than 1/2 groups. I have older Wolf match extra , it's shoots well in my CZ 455. The CCI standard velocity shoots well in all of my rifles . Once in a while a flier but over all best bullets for the money .

    I'm still waiting for that Volquartsen to have the type of showing that I read about. I know you can shoot. I'd be interested in if the bullets are getting damaged when being chambered? I have some Ruger mags that cause that with my Kidd rifles. Less than 50% of my mags feed without damaging bullets. I'll bet that is what is causing the spread.

    Try shooting from a thick rubber mat under the front rest (stable mat at Tractor Supply), or at least a piece of 3/4” plywood. Those points on a polished surface are not good.

    I was wrong, SK Semi-Auto = WINNER

    My favorite is still CCI-STD it may not be top dollars stuff, but it will
    holds its own @ $4 a box...............
    I recently picked up some CCI mini mag Target solids, they are very
    promising @ $11.99 ( 100 ) try'em I think you like them !!

    Hi Eli, great gun. Only thing that makes your rifle shoot better, is epoxy putty, bedding around the screw, start of the barrel, and the back of the action.

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  ปีที่แล้ว

      Bedding might improve it for sure but since the rifle was a loaner to me I can't.

    I love your honest videos. As beautiful as that Volquartsen rifle is, it's not a shooter. A standard Ruger 10-22 with just an upgraded Kidd barrel will outshoot that one all day long and twice on sunday. In your Z challenge, I shot some practice targets with my Kidd barreled 10-22 and shoot .430" average groups with it on those targets. Times were not great at 55 seconds.

  • @randomidiot8142
    @randomidiot8142 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When will we get a manufacturer to make us a controlled round feed semi auto action? Maybe a slight delayed blowback setup to help with extra oomph chambering the rounds and delaying bolt opening.
    Until then I guess we'll just have to deal with the dinosaur blowbacks.

  • @datapro007

    Cool video, thanks. Would you get better groups with a Lead Sled?

  • @maxie1057
    @maxie1057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This flyer problem is in the Ammo itself. You will pick up a difference with good manufactured consistent ammo verses cheaper stuff by simply doing some rim checking. Try Eley Match verses SK Match. Big difference., Eley holds a tighter tolerance. Then start swaging for consistent velocity.

  • @davidmaccormack3472
    @davidmaccormack3472 ปีที่แล้ว

    As always great video content. I would surmise, that your flyers are coming from either a weaker/stronger powder charge in each catagory, or perhaps the steel recoil pin at back of the action may be causing some interference, my only other guess would be a barrel where the extractor is not centered in the notch, but hell, Im only an old retired sailor, and I have bad eyes. I do sort by rim thickness, and have had great, but not awesome results. Just saying.....
