Love this Kristen! Can't tell you how many times I've vented and had friends vent to me about having to spend hundreds of dollars on bridesmaids dresses we'll never wear again. It's painful, and so unnecessary with how many amazing options for dresses there are out there these days. Love the idea of doing separates too!!
Yes about the bridesmaids being used as accessories for your wedding day. This is something I definitely worry about and why I chose to only have one bridesmaid. I want the person standing up with me to really want to be there and not feel like they are interchangeable with anyone else in my life. I just feel like having no more than three or four people makes more sense in terms of time and cost. There are other ways to honor your friends and female relatives than by asking them to wear matching chiffon dresses and stand in a line for 20 minutes. And I am helping my bridesmaid pay for her dress because I only think its fair.
Yeah, I have 3 bridesmaids dresses hanging in my closet that I haven't worn once since the weddings. They aren't my style but I wore them because I wanted to do it for my friends. I hate to get rid of them because I paid so much for the dress itself and the tailoring. When I get married I'm not having bridesmaids at all.
I love the new mismatched trend. If you pick a color palette and have the girls choose any dress that want within that palette then they can choose something they feel comfortable in and that fits their budget. The only stipulation i would make is it has to be floor length.
It is interesting to see how different cultures around weddings are. In my country, braidsmaids just wear whatever they want. No fight about styles, nobody feeling uncomfortable in the bride's pick. Everyone pays as much as they can afford and they can reuse the dress for the next wedding.

I didn't realise bridesmaids paid for their own dresses in America. The tradition in the UK is the bride pays
