  • Diagnosing obsessive-compulsive and related disorders involves identifying persistent and intrusive thoughts, urges, or images (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that are aimed at reducing distress or preventing a feared event or situation. These disorders include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), excoriation (skin-picking) disorder, and substance/medication-induced obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. Genetic predispositions contribute to the development of these disorders, while environmental factors such as stress or trauma may exacerbate symptoms. Individuals with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders often experience significant impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning due to the time-consuming nature of their rituals or preoccupations. Treatment typically involves a combination of medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP) techniques. Early recognition and intervention are crucial for reducing the severity of symptoms and improving overall quality of life. Understanding the diagnostic criteria outlined in the DSM-5 and utilizing evidence-based assessment tools are essential for accurate diagnosis and effective management of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.
