    I was rasied by fanatical Christian parents who I didn't know both have some kind of mental illness. To this day they have never been diagnosed or gone to any kind of therapy, but it became apparent there was something really wrong in myself and also my siblings. Its really tricky, because a lot of the older relatives died when I was young and my parents frame everything thru their religion, which their actions do not match. I have stories they have told me about their family. I really think my dad has been on the autism spectrum his entire life, and my mom acts in ways described in narcissistic personality disorder...but there was one visit one time in my childhood by an uncle of hers who had schizophrenia. He came to town to go to the psychiatric hospital. He had a truck that looked like a covered wagon on the back, and he lived in it and lived in it in the parking lot of the hospital for a week. We visited him. Thats the only reason I know he exists, and nobody ever questioned if that schizophrenia somehow was also in my mother. I have always had difficulty verbally speaking, and when I was in late high school I started having this really severe body pain. It got to the level of being debilitating in college. When I did seek help, I was only diagnosed with anxiety and major depressive disorder....but I didnt have any awareness of family history of mental illness. So now I'm wondering if I am some kind of spectrum combination of autism and schizophrenia. I never hear of anyone having the body pain sensitivity problem I do unless its whats all thrown under anxiety and depression. No psychiatrist has thought I have schizophrenia when I ask them. The chronic body pain is like being energetically too sensitive to most environments, even good ones...and because its been chronic it creates psychosis. I have never been a drug user, but my brother has and thats a whole other combination with our genes. I studied other religions, he did not, he stuck with my parent's beliefs, has these genes, and does drugs they don't acknowledge he is doing. He had a son 3 years ago, that son was diagnosed as severely autistic...and now they're all starting to believe me but I'm 46 now and its still a mystery to exactly what I've been dealing with.

    My sister has schizophrenia. She has the weight gain, diabetes etc. She is in therapy. She is over 60 and was diagnosed in her late 20's/early 30's. Is there a better medication to help with the weight and diabetes or is it too late? Thank you for your brilliant lecture!

      Thank you so much for sharing about your sister. It sounds like you’re really looking out for her, and I’m touched by how much you care. While I’m not a doctor and can’t give specific advice on medications, I do encourage you to talk with her healthcare provider. There might be options that can help with the weight and diabetes, even after all these years. It’s never too late to explore ways to improve her quality of life. Sending you both lots of love and support as you navigate this together. ❤

      I have diabetes and the keto diet has helped tremendously. Dr. Berg on TH-cam is really helpful. I have the same challenge with my sister who is younger, the diet requires you to give up carbohydrates and that takes a lot of discipline not all people with mental illness can handle. The good thing about the diet is you can have protein and healthy fats so there are a lot of savory, rich foods you can still eat. It's been around for over a decade now so there are a lot of recipes on social media and people as examples who have succeeded on it. There are a lot of medications for diabetes in combination with the diet that can help.

    I really didn't understand why therapeutic models are offered for children such as self developmental behavioral modification, (for children), and asylum seeking based therapy (for women). Now statistics do indicate that men struggle with psychological disorders, as well often as the other groups, therefore in treatment what is the aversion to seeing clientele regardless of age and gender, how is that fair? Given that there are plenty of clients who are in need of an opportunity to learn to change. Steven Holland

    • @JenMJA
      @JenMJA หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Steve, and I really appreciate your concern for equity in therapy. You’re absolutely right that men, like all groups, can and do struggle with psychological disorders, and it's crucial that everyone has access to the support they need. To clarify, most therapeutic models aren’t exclusive to any one group. I have offered previous lectures covering those. This lecture was meant to offer additional resources that would be more specialized for various reason. It's common that therapies are developed or adapted to address specific needs based on age, gender, or life experiences. For example, children might need different approaches due to their developmental stage, and women may have unique trauma experiences that require specialized care. However, this doesn't mean that men or other groups are overlooked. There are many therapies and treatment options available that are inclusive and tailored to meet the needs of all clients, regardless of age or gender. The goal is always to provide the best possible care for everyone. It’s important that everyone who needs help gets the right kind of support, and that’s what these various therapeutic models aim to do. Thank you again for bringing up such an important topic!

      You're right! I apologize for my error. According to the DSM 5TR presence of one (or more) of the following symptoms is required: 1. Delusions. 2. Hallucinations. 3. Disorganized speech (e.g., frequent derailment or incoherence). 4. Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior. The key here is really the duration though or the "brief-ness" of it- more than 1 day, but less than 1 month.
