  • About Gaurav:
Gaurav Tekriwal is the founder President of The Vedic Math Forum India. As an educator and motivator, Gaurav has been imparting High Speed Vedic Math skills globally over the last twelve years. He inspires and informs students, helping them to realize their true potential through High Speed Vedic Math.
He has taken the Vedic Math system to over 4 million students in India, South Africa, Oman, UAE, Romania, Ghana and Malaysia. Gaurav in his leisure time reads and blogs and is currently writing a book called "Maths Sutra" to be released early next year.
    About his talk:
Gaurav talks about India and its various assets, one very important but unfortunately forgotten by many- Vedic Maths. From making the audience solve quick vedic math problems on the spot to sharing some interesting stories like vedic maths being copywritten by an American, Gaurav takes the audience on a journey of vedic maths and concludes with the importance of making Vedic Maths a global phenomenon.

I wish they would teach this method in the USA. So much faster than what they teach in schools here. And then politics pretty much decide the rules on the education system and they have been screwing it up for generations. It's as if it was planned that way.

They started practising Vedic maths after they failed in normal Maths. Now, their grades should be improving. Lower pass rate data was before they started using Vedic maths.

As others have noted, there is nothing particularly deep or Vedic about Vedic math. Jingoistic shouting about Vedic math being a great contribution from India does great disservice to actual deep contributions made by ancient India mathematicians like Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara, Madhava etc. It is a pity that most jingoistic Indians who shout from the rooftop about how Indians knew how to fly because flying appears in the Ramayan, would be ignorant of the Kerela school of mathematics established by Madhava in the 14th century. The Kerela school almost discovered calculus about two centuries before Newton (who of course made much more substantial contributions including laying down the foundations). A famous infinite series for pi, which was later rediscovered in Europe is now called the Madhava-Gregory series. The Kerela school also calculated very precise value of many trigonometric functions. Indians of course also discovered the decimal place value system and the number zero. More recently we have had eminent mathematicians like Ramanujan, Harish Chandra, VK Patodi, Narasimhan, Seshadri etc, just to name a few. One should feel proud of these people instead of inconsequential bullshit like Vedic math. To get a good perspective of actual INdian contributions to mathematics refer to some videos by Prof Dani on youtube.

The funny thing is: China has been winning the Math Olympiad for many successive years. It has won it 19 times. US won it several times, this year included. India is nowhere in picture.
Can Vedic Math fix this problem? Not sure.

Interestingly he says india needs vedic maths. I want to refute certain claims of Gaurav Tekriwal.
    1. Vedic nature: There is nothing vedic about vedic mathematics. The so called sutras neither occur in vedas nor in any ancient literature. Heck, even their(the sutra's) grammar is different from vedic sanskrit.
    2. India's gift to the world: Really. Swamiji by his own admission says that he started working on this book from 1957 while earlier authors have published similar books with strikingly similar methods. like trachenberg system(developed in 1930's), abacus method(ancient china and early modern europe).
    3. Mathematics: 'Vedic Mathematics' just teaches how to do speed calculations but not the concepts of maths in whole. And maths is all about concepts, for now calculators have simplified the job of computing. There's a lot more to maths than just high speed calculations and it is disheartning to see people who have degenerated mathematics to the ability to do high speed calculations.

Vedic mathematics is great. But is not of Vedic origin. It was retro fitted via interpretations. Even basic education was never passed to the masses for thousands of years due to strict caste system. So it's never hereditary practice for 90 plus percent of Indians.
