- Abhinav Seetharaman, an undergraduate student at Columbia University, delivered a talk about Sanskrit and its global influence. One of Abinhav’s concerns is why Latin and Ancient Greek are taught much more than Sanskrit, for he explained how all three have had an immense influence on the world in which we live today. He explained and demonstrated how learning Sanskrit has ameliorated his pronunciation, linguistic and cultural understanding, and view of the world.
Abhinav Seetharaman is a third-year undergraduate student at Columbia University, majoring in Economics and Sustainable Development with a concentration in Sanskrit. He started learning the Sanskrit language as a high-school student and completed a 3-year Sanskrit immersion program before matriculation into college. As a sophomore last year, he co-founded a TH-cam channel called ‘Spoken Sanskrit Series,’ that aims to teach conversational Sanskrit in an enjoyable and casual manner. His efforts towards the revival of the language continue with him being co-founder and singer in a Sanskrit A Cappella group called “The Sanskrit Boys.” Additionally, Abhinav is a professional South-Indian percussionist and performs in concerts and outreach programs across the United States, India, and other venues abroad.

But the philosophies of Shankara and Madhva are diametrically opposite. Shankara is an absolute non-dualist and propounded the theory of Maya. Madhva is a dualist, a devotionalist and a Vaishnavite. How can you consider both to be your masters?

in Italy we study ancient Greek and Latin, and when we learn the grammar we also compare with the Sanskrit roots!!
Interesting i had the opposite experience when i was learning Sanskrit, i was told that Greek is similar in grammatical structure. I had learned Latin first and then years later currently studying Sanskrit. Lots of similarities indeed!

Latin is it's own linear evolution from Sanskrit & not from Greek. Greek, Armaic, Arabic & Hebrew are closer related but evolved from Sanskrit. Basically all languages are regional dialects of Sanskrit.

Its a pity. Yet we in india cannot find a sanskrit graduate or post graduate course. The seculars and islamists object to it. Muslims have considered speaking sanskrit or words from sankrit as blasphemy from their prophet and allah. It is a profoundly beautiful, intellectual and sacred language that simply lost its status in the minds of easily influenced people (who happen to be in high numbers) after the rapid influx of foreign cultures and religions.
@@ananya.a04 Have you noticed that how exact are the pronounciation and the spellings in Sanskrit? I guess other Indian languages have this feature too. It's such a great thing that what we write is what we pronounce unlike English where you will have to follow different rules for pronounciation and then also you will find certain words which are exceptions. I find it fascinating!

I know he's only a young guy and all but for a talk titled "The Beauty The Is Sanskrit" I expected to hear a lot more about what is actually beautiful about the language - the grammar, pronunciation, precision, versatility, etc. I studied Sanskrit at university and there are many more interesting things to say about it than what we heard in this talk.

Sanskrit was a spoken language and is still a spoken language of India. It exists today only in classical form whose grammar was composed by Panini. The hymns are those of Vedic Sanskrit. Scriptures are not stopping innovation. They layout the framework of Sanskrit. What you are doing is following the lines of Sheldon Pollock which will not revive Sanskrit but kill it.
I don't know, how many of them speeking sanskrit in India, don't bluff my frend, accept the truth it is not even a spoken tongue, show me a single empire who ruled in ancient past, tamizh is at least root of all Indian languages including samaskrutham

@@gauravav1635 Tamizh doesn't only have oldest known inscriptions. More than 55% of inscriptions found so far are in Tamizh. Tamizh words form the root of many Sanskrit words. If Sanskrit was the first language spoken throughout the world once upon a time, then there should be at least some remote places where its still remaining. Right ? Tamizh has that quality. Tribals in Cameroon, Pakistan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha who are still untouched by morden world are speaking Tamizh even today. Stories surrounding Sanskrit are purely a hype to suppress the native Indians.

In my view Sanaskrit should be made the national and official language of India. Most of the asian countries are able to maintain their identities because they have their own language. Take Japan, China, Korea, Thailand as examples.

But unfortunately, if we say to today's kids to embrace culture and things like Classical dance and classic singing, they'll laugh and their parents will say that is useless and talk like they will not provide any jobs. I'm very curious about Sanskrit. However, I found this talk to be surprisingly devoid of any content. We already know that Sanskrit is Indo-European, so the whole introduction about similarities with Latin and ancient Greek is not surprising. Then the speaker goes on to repeat how perfect the grammar is, and great it is, and never shows any example of it.
Finally, all the advantages he claims there are to learning Sanskrit are really advantages to learning any language with complex grammar, such as Latin, Greek, or Russian.
So, although I'm still curious about Sanskrit, I didn't learn one single thing from this talk, as much as I appreciate and respect the enthusiasm of the speaker.
I haven't even watched this talk but it seem that the general consensus (maybe only of Indian natives) from this comment section is that this talk was presented poorly and could have been better presented by another expert.

SO LINGUISTICS CLASSIFY SANSKRIT NOT AS ANCIENT AS TAMIL. TAMIL IS THE FIRST LANGUAGE OF INDIA. Recent excavations in Keeladi in Tamil Nadu found an urban city similar to indus valley and the mud pots and gold bars have Tamil name written old Tamil script and carbon dated as 300to500 BC..AMONG 60000 INCRIPTIONS RECODRDED BY ASI 45000 ARE IN TAMIL. ASHOKA INCRIPTION OF 300BC DOES NOT HAVE SANSKRIT. THE EARLIEST SANSCRIPT WAS FOUND IN INSIA IS 400AD AND THAT TOO IN MAHAVALIPURAM IN TAMIL NADU. Sanskrit is younger to Tamil. HARVARD UNIVERSITY RANKED WORLD CLASSICAL LANGUAGE AND FOUND ONLY TAMIL SCORED 10 OUT OF 10..

It's not indo-european language it's an INDIAN language composed by Panini of India. Which gave birth to all Indian languages and some Europeans came to India and took some words from sanskrit and created Bumbo jumbo theory called indo-european theory
Spot on...it was created from Greek and Latin.Propogated by indo Europeans the Aryans in India.But North India are fooled by their government by giving them false sense of pride that their forefathers created Sanskrit.The history taught in school and college in India is all cooked up according to whims of govt.
When I realized and researched myself I was so disappointed for wasting my time and money in school and college.
I at least got to know the truth but still 99% Indians think Sanskrit belong to their race.

Those who wish to learn sanskrit please do learn from Internet, it's an universal language.
It's not easy to learn Sanskrit. Sanskrit is the hardest language with chinese and Russian.. in fact, no other language can compare it's grammar to Sanskrit's complexized Grammar.. you can learn a little bit of Sanskrit via internet, but you cannot learn Sanskrit like you learnt English. LoL that's kinda impossible

Felt great to see someone talking about Sanskrit on TED platform. I was fortunate to learn Sanskrit in school and then after many years enhanced that knowledge studying it 3 years part time. I totally enjoy teaching the kids to recite the shlokas and basic grammar. I wish in India atleast every school teaches this language and we have more art forms like music and drama performed in Sanskrit.

From what I have read, Sanskrit was only the language of the priests and the educated, not of the common man.
This Disinformation is being spread from Ashoka times.. Sanskrit is the one which has pure grammar.. Prakrit is also Sanskrit but with less grammar.. Prakrit varies from place to place.. because Prakrit is all the base of al Indian languages like Punjabi Bengali Oriya etc.. Tamil has very less or no influence from Sanskrit; Kannada Telugu and Malayalam are children of both Sanskrit and Tamil.. there was never a competition like what some vested interests are spreading now..

Sanskrit is much more widely read, appreciated and learnt than Latin.
I hardly know of anyone today actually speaking Latin except may be in the Vatican!

We all learn 3 languages at school level . Mother tongue, English and Hindi . Why not remove Hindi altogether and replace with Sanskrit?

@@mahalakshmikousalya Mattur brahmins were originally Tamizhs until recently. Just before someone fourty years they were trying to get conveted to Sanskrit speakers. It's just an experiment. Those people are now feeling left out. Tribals in Cameroon, Pakistan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha who are still untouched by morden civilization are speaking Tamizh even today. Stories surrounding Sanskrit are just a myth and hype.
I have nothing against Sanskrit, and it has always intrigued me.
This ted talk has to be the first where I can say with certainty that I learnt nothing. Very convoluted speech.

Sound effect on mind of Sanskrit. I listen to Ribhu Gita bought at Sri Ramanashramam, Tiruvannamalai every day from 5:00 to 6:00 keeps my mind away and enjoy Anandam which is beyond Happiness and sorrow. It gives me extra energy through out the day at an age of 80.

there is only one way of pronouncing words in sanskrit, the grammar is well defined, the language is made in such a manner that the message of conveyor can be conveyed correctly as well as can be understood correctly by the listener without any confusion in terms of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. And along with that the sounds of the the language are chosen in such a manner so that the heights of the human potential to make sounds can be reached.
studies says that sanskrit language is helpful in sharpening ones intellect.
Along with all these qualities , there is huge poetic scope in this language.
I feel proud to be a part of the land where sanskrit was created.
