We actually had $150K in savings before she got sick and I had to pay alot of medical expenses. But I still have about $65K and I add to it every paycheck. We also have over $500K in retirement savings, and it took 16yrs to save that. But it takes effort if you are average folks like us with average pay. You can do it. Our journey started with investing $250 per paycheck, and scaled up as we got raises, bonuses, commissions, tax refund & etc.

My understanding is that even when the job is favorable, candidates are still not expected to commit to even close to five years staying with the same company, because supposedly this is how people move up the ladder.
