Actually the worst places to live in Colorado would be the places out on the southern Front Range, like Pueblo and Colorado Springs. The Springs has the worst drivers and roads in the whole state, and quite a lot of crime in its southern half. The far western towns are much more peaceful, and cleaner. People are friendlier there as well. It's in the desert region, but there's no stress in the air like there is on the Front Range. And housing isn't insanely high and scarce like it is in the High Rockies region (i.e. Eagle, Summit, and Pitkin Counties).
It is strange they say towns like Montrose are crummy. I went there 3 weeks ago and was surprised how nice everything looked.
