Peter, if you're still in the area check out the Saratoga/Washington county area. There's a great mix of thriving and not so thriving towns and villages to explore.
Saratoga is a gem. Some key smaller towns in the area Schuylerville, Salem, Greenwich, Malta, Cambridge. Tons of history as well. Underground railroad, Presidents, Revolution, Natives etc.

Facts: In fiscal 2010, the Upstate region generated less than 28 percent of the state’s taxes and other non-federal revenues (including SUNY tuition, lottery and other gambling profits, motor vehicle fees and so on). By contrast, Upstate received a much larger share of state-funded expenditures, 42 percent. The state’s largest source of non-federal revenue, the personal income tax, is particularly concentrated Downstate. New York City and its suburbs represent 64 percent of state residents, but around 80 percent of the income tax.

A well kept US secret is both the nuclear age and the space age were started in western ny. These beginnings are still classified. Understand, the folks in Huntsville, AL worked on getting the US craft to space. Navagating in space is a whole different matter ... developed in western ny.

@@adrianeragan2694 I agree I was born in Tucson Arizona and raised in Upstate New York a lot of good history from where I'm around the underground railroad and all that and you know the first Red Cross I live right by Clara Barton in the town of Dansville New York. But Harriet Tubman that run the underground railroad is right on the path where I grew up and it's amazing the old farm houses that used to take them in hide them in between the walls and they had their processes down really good. Yes I would love to see Peter come over this area like Naples New York down into there and it's just a lot of history and all the grape Vines and the big farms and just just all the beautiful little towns I have a camp up in the Adirondack mountains up by Russell New York and I just love it up there it's right by the state lands my property is as soon as you drive in the state lands up that are backed up by the Canadian border. And I haven't been up there in years but I need to get up there and check out my camp and go spend some time. I am from Upstate NY, and my family has a cabin in Newcomb, NY, which is not too far from Lake Placid. I'm surprised you didn't visit even more small towns like Long Lake, Saranac Lake, or Tupper Lake. Also "Go down a half mile to the Stewarts, take a left at the Stewarts, and then go another right at that Stewarts" is totally a way of getting around here xD. I have many, many childhood memories of the Adirondacks, never realizing how really special it all is until I got older. I'm always so tired of people thinking that "NY" means NYC. So thankyou for showing this to more of the world to spread awareness. You've done a great job- also it does rain a lot! So for folks visiting, don't forget your rain gear! It would have been awesome if you could have gone on a kayak or canoe and gone on the Hudson River or the Ausable. It's absolutely gorgeous scenery. Peter, your videos are always so moving and informative. The dad from Lake Placid is truly a special human being. I got choked up when he started talking about ham radio. My dad was a hobbyist too, and I remember the time and effort he put in to learn morse code for ham radio. I didn't realize how difficult it was until I grew up. He eventually became certified. Although he's no longer with us, I'm incredibly proud of him.
As a young man, I can still picture the four walls of his ham radio room covered in maps of the world. He received calls for help from ships with navigation issues at sea and I remember how excited he was to help guide them. Looking back, I'm so proud of all he accomplished. Thank you for sharing his story. Just wanted to add, Caribbean people are also incredibly friendly.
Peter, you've truly touched our lives in so many ways. Thank you for your amazing content. Take care!

Depressing, cried all the time, as soon as I dropped my son off at school, I just drove around and cried...then the olympics started! We sat and watched together ...that hockey game blew us away! Peter, thank you! I was waiting for an episode about Upstate New York or the Adirondacks! I'm from Hungary and I spent many summers there in Brant Lake, working in a camp with a J-1 visa, just like those guys in Lake Placid. I've been to many places around the state, starting from the city, driving up to Brant Lake, or just driving around when we had time off. Albany, Glens Falls, Lake George, Ticonderoga, Speculator, Rome, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain. And many, many more. Like the lad said in the video, a Dollar General and Stewart's are really the most small town upstate things. Upstate New York will always be like a second home for me, brilliant people around, beautiful places to visit. I truly believe that this state is one of the best place to visit for Europeans. You visited the building, my moms side of the family owned in the early 70s and 80s! (The Olympic arena where the miracle on ice happened)
My mom used to tell me stories as a kid when she would ask to go, but my grandparents couldn't afford the drive up due to financial burdens.
I have Olympic roots tied to the area as well through my mom's side. My Great Great Uncle Patrick Martin was a gold medal winning bobsledder in the late 1940s and 50s and used to use the old tracks they have in the mountains in Lake Placid. He grew up in the small town of Massena, NY, and went to go on to compete in Oslo and other places during his Olympic career. He has a memorial in Massena NY dedicated to his legacy. He died an early death, but it makes me proud to say I'm related to him ❤

Tug Hill Plateau sits to the east of lake Ontario, the Black River Valley is sandwiched between Tug Hill and the western Adirondacks. We are also home of the US Army's 10th Mountain Division which is one of the few bases where the military's cold and snowy climate training takes place. beautiful times to visit and we'd love to have you show everyone our part, the best part ;) , of NY State! Western New York here. Clumped together with upstate.
This part of NY is rich in history. The Central Terminal and our waterways were not the hub of the nation, but the world. The Central Terminal intrical for war time travel. Shoulder to shoulder travelers both soldiers and civilians. Thriving and bustling where it was hard to locate your loved one. In the terminal still stands a clock. Around the clock was a jewlery counter. Many proposals and engagements happened on the spot. A ring purchased by both departing soldiers and returning. You often heard " meet me by the clock". You can find photos online. I am a boomer, so had family who experienced WWII and the bustling days of the stunning terminal. I treasure my personal photos. Men in uniform or suits, over coats and fedoras. Ladies dressed to the nines in well made suits, dresses, white cloves and seamed nylon stockings. Not a hair out of place as the ladies took pride in styling their victory rolls, bumber bangs, pin curls, finger waves and comb through curls. ( My mom). So much more to say about this love letter of art deco, now with only beautiful memories. Dates of operation were 1929-1979 . Still used for certain venues. Our grain elevators and silos where ships would doc. Some still do. Ships from around the world carrying up to 500,000 TONS of cargo such as flour/sugar. You can watch them come into the harbor. Even hear the crew. AH-mazing site. Bet you never knew your Cherrios are made here. General Mills when baking, often fills Buffalo's air for miles with the smell of Cheerios. The Pan American Exposition was held in Bflo. Some of the astounding architecture still stands. Forest Lawn Cemetary is stunning. Presidents and other well knowns rest in this park like setting. Air conditioning, cardiac pace makers and so much else invented here. Harriet Tubman way into Lewiston NY to cross waters, hide and free slaves. Mark Twain resided here and his original writings, furniture and belongings still here to see. Much, much more. Old Fort Niagara with reenactments on the lake. Native American history too. Allegany State Park is stunning. The Allegany Mountains are part of the Appalachain Trail. Cattaragus County also home to Amish. Letchworth State Park.. breathtaking. Used to belong to a single man who left it for all to enjoy. Castile NY. 😊 SO, SO much more to see and learn for those interested in learning. Sadly, Gen X might not ever know the rich history.
We are sooo much more than NYC. NY is stunning. Many farms and homesteaders. As I young girl, my father took me for rides or on errands with him. To the waters stock yards you name it. He'd be telling me things on every journey. What did I care? I was about six -ten. My mind was on him getting me the big fat chalk and steel ball bearings from where he worked, Republic Steel. I'd pick tiny shells on Woodlawn Beach and he was still talking about things I never thought I'd care about. I was eight! Boy oh boy, thank God for my dear
Ol dad and that I had the sense to listen with one ear. The words, teachings and stories he spoke are now invaluable jewels held in my heart. I am now in my autumn and grateful to have seen and know. I passed these knowings on to my children and hope they pass it to theirs. Oh my, I got caught up in the stroll down memory lane. Beautiful days gone by. Come see!! Come see!! Stop in Frank & Teresa's Anchor Bar. The place " wings" ( not hot wings, not chicken wings) were born! Grab a real beef on weck and a cold beer. A WNY fish fry and an oooie gooey pizza from mom and pop shops. One on every corner. Did I mention REAL KIELBASA & Pierogi? These are the real deal! The others...
    FUHGEDDABOUDIT ‼️
    GO BILLS!
If you hung around through my reminiscing thank you!

This is local legend but he landed a few miles away from our village in 1066 and reaped havoc in the surrounding country

Anyways, if anyone has any questions I can try my best to answer.

Peter, I have to say thank you. I'm a guy living in rural Kentucky, considering moving to the New England (or upstate New York) area in a few years. I have no desire to be in a big city, and love the mountains and countryside. A lot of the areas you cover are right up my alley, so I'm low-key using some of your videos for research. Keep up the good work.

I'm a Dorchester/Boston guy who moved up to, first northern Vermont and Then Rouses Point , NY thirty years ago . I married a Quebec French Woman and have been here over thirty years. Wouldn't have it any other way . True upstate NY is unparalleled in access to nature and in the great people of the North Country. Despite the high taxes and poor State leadership, I find myself loving this area. Thanks for showcasing this on your channel.

High taxes???? High taxes are predominantly in the city and Westchester County! Upstate is much lower taxes that's why they have cheap living

I grew up near the Adirondacks north of Saratoga Springs and yes this area of NY is an absolute hidden gem. I went up there again in my 20s with my friend, and was perplexed how deserted some of the most beautiful area of our country is. There's incredibly low crime, and further north of Plattsburgh and Monroe NY extremely affordable beautiful properties. I was amazed at how all the young people in my town growing up all wanted to go to the city to get rich, party do drugs and keep up with the Jones's on Instagram, yet never returned or appreciated the deep spiritual beauty that upstate NY has. Ticonderoga area, you have these old forts and it has this colonial classical feel to it, combined with a natural beauty, living in the south since and even visiting up back there for the summer, how would you describe it. A 'Mystical Silence'. It's the only way I could, it's just ......quiet...so intensely peacefully quiet, yet not overpriced like Vermont is.
Now everyone's old, I just turned 36 and considering saving and fixing up a home up there, because it's so forgotten and silent and beautiful. I want somewhere in the world quiet like this area to start working on hobbies and writing. One of the best places on earth as far as I'm concerned.

Fellow Vermonter here. I really enjoyed this video. It’s nice to see someone showing real New Yorkers and the “real” New York. I think most Vermonters and upstate New Yorkers have a lot in common.

That's too bad. The City has a lot of the best things to do. Broadway, museums, historic architecture, diverse ethnic neighborhoods and their foods, etc.
Hope you get to experience it one day. It's not to be missed. 🗽🍎❤

I disagree. Thats all preference and opinion. Lived in NY my entire life. Im almost 40. Never spent a day in the city. Never will. I think the opposite. A free walk through the countryside will trump any over priced anything NYC has to offer. I grew up in a "city" with a population of 7800 and I cant stand it. Cities dont offer anything I enjoy.
