- Lone Pine California (200 Mile) Road Trip Ride Along and Buckle up and join me on an epic 200-mile adventure to Lone Pine, California. We’ll be crossing the vast, otherworldly Mojave Desert highways and dipping down to the lowest point in the US at Badwater, California, a staggering 282 feet below sea level. Feel the heat yet?
From there, I cruise along Highway 190, making a pit stop at the legendary 20 Mule Team Historic Site. Ever wonder how they hauled all that borax back in the day? We’ll find out together. Next, we’ll tackle some scenic mountain passes and take a quick detour to Keeler to check out the End Of The Line Monument - an old historic train depot that’s sure to give you a glimpse of yesteryears.
Then, it’s onward to the visitor center at US Highway 395 before we hit Lone Pine. Here, we’ll dive into the silver screen at the Hollywood Museum of Western Films. After soaking up some movie magic, we’ll pay our respects at the 1872 cemetery for earthquake victims - a somber but important stop.
Our journey doesn’t end there, though! We’ll visit the Manzanar Historic Site, reflecting on the history of the Japanese during World War II. Finally, we'll roll into Independence, California, to rest up for the night.
It’s a trip packed with history, stunning landscapes, and a touch of Hollywood glam - you won’t want to miss it. Let’s hit the road!

Would like to drive with you. Not like my husband who does not stop to look! Great videos!
Hi , longtime subscriber here. There's are numerous key factors as to why your so successful on TH-cam my friend. But I must point out one key factor, you have a distinctly Mellifluous voice . In a sense , you remind me of Bob Ross . The beloved American painter on PBS . You have a very smooth voice that puts people at ease , God knows in this day & age we could all use a little audio therapy. Your videos have always been enlightening, informative and entertaining. Thank you for allowing us to tag along on your journey's. I'm relatively certain you have single-handedly inspired countless folks to strike out on their own adventures. Myself included . And I hope to meet & thank you personally out there on the road someday. Until then , God bless you and keep you safe.
Well done Thank you
I agree with you. I call him Uncle Bob.
When I hear your comments as you travel, I often smile because you remind of my travels & how similar your thoughts mimic mine. I grew up in Ohio & now live in Hawaii, don't do any road trips anymore & I miss that. As an Asian American. I want to thank you for visiting Manzanar & your respectful reflections on it's importance😊
I have terrible insomnia, your journeys carry me away from my troubles, ease my thoughts, and allows me to drift to sleep for a few hours. Sincerely. Thank you
Russ, I have traveled over much of this beautiful county with you. I love just riding along, listening to the cruisin' music and enjoying the sights.
HEY,Hey, RVerTV, hitting the back roads today. Thanks, Russ , for taking us all along, Yay 👍
You are outdoing yourself on this excursion. Thanks for taking us along.
Beautiful i❤ desert sun rises. Thanks again for sharing another great video.
Great Russ. The Lone Ranger came over to England by the BBC mid 50s. The first cowboy I saw apart from in books & comics. An indelible memory watching this on my grandmother's TV starting a life-long passion for westerns. The start was him galloping along the Alabama flats at Lone Pine filmed in black & white. In 1956 the start was filmed in colour at Iversons Ranch. This start is always tagged on to all b&w episodes on TV & DVDs, thus depriving viewers of the far more exciting, original beginning. Happy Trails.
The lone ranger show still gets cable TV airtime here in USA.
Showtime is everyday recently on GRIT channel around noon or 10 a.m.
As an american I've been a fan since the 1970's
What a neat adventure this trip. I had a Tom Mix belt w secret compartment; a Hoppy ring; a Straight Arrow ring...exciting stuff way back when. Thanks for all you do, Russ.
Dig your vibe MrRuss😎
You make it look easy👍👍
Manzanar is a MUST VISIT for all. The rebuilding has been an amazing undertaking over the last two decades since the main Interpretive Center opened in 2004. Thank you for including this portion of our history that unfortunately is usually excluded in today’s curriculum.
Have a wonderful summer Russ❤
US 395 from Hesperia to Bishop is one of my most favorite drives!!! Travel Safe, Russ!!!
We just finished that route last week!
Such a nice video. The scenery was gorgeous, museum and internment camp were interesting. Thanks for sharing!🚐
Hey Russ 🤠 what a cool drive today. Lone Pine has had hundreds of movies and TV shows filmed there. And that museum is on my to do list! I was very impressed with those saddles !! The camp was incredibly sad, but, I’m glad you showed it, because, I imagined it much worse. Another great video today 👍👍
Wow Russ! This video is one of my favorites! Thank you for checking everything out. 😎🧐🚐
I love these videos. As a lifelong RVer and western states road traveller, I relive the roadtrips through this TH-cam site. Many thanks!!
Awesome, thank you!
Hey Russ, Looking forward to this one. Beautiful scenery!
Thanks 👍
Thank you Russ! This is one of my favorite routes ❤ Your videography is absolutely fantastic! Thank you for taking the time to present your trips in the most ways.. Your narration makes the trip as much as the photography ❤ Have a great upcoming weekend! 😊⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you very much!
Totally love back roads
Thanks for visiting my neck of the woods. Bishop says hello. Safe Travels
Russ, I think seeing you hike to the Borax field is the longest hike I have ever seen you take. Hahah. Good going!
Roy Rogers and Dale were realy good Godly people ,They adopted kids to add to their family and his adopted daughter speaks very highly of her parents ,she said she never felt different or less cared for than her brothers and sisters.
I'll probably not get here but that SEA LEVEL sign is very cool and it really DOES give one perspective! I love this video already!
Took this trip in January of 22 loved every minute of it. Epic journey holds a special place in my heart honestly
thank you Russ, you're the best !.👍😉
Our favorite camping spot was the Sierras. We have lots of family that still live in olancha. Love that whole area and up to June lake
Mine too!
We were in that area in 2022 about this time of year. Amazing to think the lowest and highest points in the lower 48 states are so close to each other. Towne Pass is quite the ride. Lone Pine and that whole area is interesting. That Western Museum was awesome. Great video, as always.
Never rushing, you're a good driver
🙂👍 Thank you. Lots of interesting things.
Fantastic, perfect for my Thursday night viewing. Pt2, thank you Russ!
Thank you so much for the wonderful trip, and though we are not subscribers we love watching your videos and listening to you happiness. Thank you Sir.
that tall mountain you spoke off driving into badwater, has a road to the top. It's called Dantes Point. What a view.
Russ that was great when you said heck I’m a fossil 😂😂😂
I really enjoy watching your TH-cam Channel, Russ! 👍👍👍👍👍 I wish you safe travels. Talk soon, Alan.
Thanks for another wonderful video,
Enjoy watching.
Hi Russ.. love this video..❤...safe travels 😊
Your camera is so good, the distant hills show up like crystals, so sharp.
True 👍
Wow!! What a beautiful trip. Very interesting. Thanks Russ!!
Thanks for watching
My wife and I remember you when you first started out in that white vane! You come a long way
IM OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER DEAD VALLEY DAYS STANLEY ANDREWS AND RONALD REAGAN... THAT'S GOING BACK A FEW YEARS... MY WIFE AND I ENJOY YOUR CHANNEL AND ENJOY YOUR TRAVELS ABOUT A YEAR AGO YOU WAS IN AMISH COUNTRY IN NORTH EAST OHIO ...HIT CLOSE TO HOME WE ARE FROM COLUMBUS ...EVERY SUMMER THAT WOULD BE ONE OF THE TRIPS WE WOULD TAKE... AND STAY IN MOHICAN STATE PARK IN LOUDENVILLE, OHIO... KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB👍☺️☺️👍
Great stops you made. Thanks Russ! Snow and more snow.
Nice show...i lived in California 50 years...been in Eastern Idaho 18 now...but i love the geography of California...one of our favorite drives was 395, from Hesperia to to Reno...i could drive that everyday😊...Death Valley Days was the series you were referring to...i still have the model of the 20 Mule Team i bought in late 60's...the trains and water tank were pail blue with the red wheels...Thanks for the memories!..?
I've traveled the 395 for years, actually decades now and have always intended to visit the film museum and Manzanar but never have. As the saying goes- Time (AGE) marches on; so I probably won't be making visits like these.
Thankfully, there are wonderful people like you that do visit places that are interesting, historical or beyond reach of some people. Thank you for sharing your journeys.
Safe travels!
You're such a treasure. Thank you so much for all the videos. I truly enjoy them!!
Hey Russ
Thanks for another video. You can only be a fossil when you aren't able to get out of your rocking chair.
❤ awesome as usual
❤
Wow. 90 at sunrise. Love hitting the road as the light is just breaking - especially in the desert. Not the heat part though. And the heat ain't everywhere. Cold damp and drizzly this morning here on the west coast. June-gloom as it's long been called. Some folks would rather have the heat. I'd just like to see some blue sky fairly soon. Can see it over on the other side of the mountains but I doubt will get it here. Another good one here! Cheers. 👍
Unexpected beauty! My husband even sat in on this tutorial! Really enjoyed all the paints and those fabulous metallics! ❤😊
Loved the history my dad use to take us out and teach us the history live that only way. Thank you. Howard homestead Apache junction Arizona.
Nice videos I’ve have the younger family members watching/following you also. One of Interesting results once the younger ones started following you, it peaked the curiosity and your scenic and historic site stops along your way have pacifically peaked the interest in history and science. Thanks
top ,see you soon..
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
We’re heading past Lone Pine in 3 days! We LOVE the 395! Been wanting to see this section through Darwin so thank you!
Thank you for video, I was there 25 years ago and I couldn’t breath because of the heat, your video brought back memories, so vast, so beautiful 🇬🇧
There's a brilliant series of TH-cam about the wheelright that restored the borax wagons. Fascinating. Dave Engels. Worth a look at
395 is the best!!! I’m so happy you are taking us along !!!
always enjoy your unique trips and narration. Cheers!
Cat napped to keep up at museum! Thank you for nice excursion!
Great start Russ... we are with ya! Looking forward to the Sierras.
Thanks for the ride along. I would never travel alone in these places you go. I need a posse with me. Stay safe
My grandfather was the Inyo County Sheriff back in the 1950s. He lived in Independence which is a little ways north of Lone Pine.
Love the road trips looking out the side window, it’s going to be great traveling
Thanks for another great tour, Russ. I love the 395 drive and in 2023 was camping up near Mammoth for two months before coming up to Oregon. It will be even better on the next trip now that I have the van and won't be towing anymore. Take care, Mike
I stayed in Death Valley N.P. in the first week of June 2016. Only myself and one other person in the campground. It was the last weekend for that campground to be open until the Fall. Met a French couple out on Bad Water Basin and warned them if they weren't sweating, they were already dehydrated; gave them some water and suggested they head back. I waited until they safely returned to the parking lot. By the time I got back at 9:30 am it was in the lower 100s F.
This video was so interesting! I’ve never seen one about that internment camp! Thank you for stopping there Russ! Look forward to the next one! By the way I heard a Rooster crowing in the old town of Keeler!❤️😀🇺🇸🌏
That's my neighbors Rooster, along with naying goats, cluckin Chickens & barking dogs & way too many feral cat fights.
Just amazing Russ, I'm in this area in September on my road trip.
Wow...amazing video. Learned so much about the Borax mining operations & Manzanar camp.. great coverage. For someone who doesn't live in USA this is a great way to learn about the history.
Wow! Russ, that was a very interesting trip in time to Manzanar. I grew up in Gardena, CA in the 60s, all my friends were Japanese kids. Seems like all the families I knew were doing well by that time and had put the hard times behind them. In fact it wasn't till I had a Japanese friend in the 80s who told me about his family being there as we drove to Mammoth to go skiing that I learned about the place and what had happened there. Was a different world than what we live in now. I really hope and pray that scene never plays out again in America. Great video!
AWESOME RUSS this is fun to watch
Enjoyed your trip. Yes! Iron Man was filmed in the Alabama Hills outside of Lone Pine. My husband was a crew member. Indeed, Tom Mix was the silent movies.
When I first saw that Stage Coach you mentioned it reminded me of the old Wells Fargo commercial 😊
WOW 😎✌️
I love the drive up 395!
Hey Russ, just up from Keeler is the restored ghost town named Cerro Gordo - not sure you mentioned that but it's a vibrant resurrection that's currently going on. Not sure your van could make it up there and the road is always changing.
GREAT DAY..GREAT 👍 RIDE...THANKS RUSS
I enjoy your video's so much, i LOVE CALIFORNIA, I'VE SEEN IT ALL BUT I ENJOY WATCHING WHERE I'VE BEEN. BORN AND RAISED IN THIS STATE, AND SOON I'LL MAKE MY LAST TRIP UP NORTH TO RIO VISTA. THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT ENTERTAINMENT.
Love your videos and narration! Just bought a van and looking forward to visting these areas soon!
Great video Russ. Really enjoyed the 20 mule team borax spot. Thanks for taking time to share it all.
Been to/through Lone Pine more times than I can remember. Been up & down Hwy395 to go camping/backpacking/4wheeling all over the eastern Sierra for decades.
Couldn’t watch it all but what I saw was nice.
Thanks for posting....the Manzanar Historic Site is on my list of places I want to visit. I actually visited the Poston Monument after watching one of your videos. I have actually visited a number of places I first learned about on your channel (Scott's Bluff, Yuma Prison, and Pop's on Rt 66 to name a few). Thanks for the inspiration Russ!!
Great video. Great travels! Be safe!
I watched an episode of Death Valley a few days ago, where they were using the original wagons. Mules looked the same too! lol Safe travels Russ!
Great great drive. Love how you tell the history to us. My wife and kids love watching your shows. We saved you as our favorite on TH-cam. We need people like you to explore and show the audience. Again thank you and please don’t give up. ❤
Amazing video my friend!! Keep it up! BIG LIKE 👍
Beautiful terrain! You passed by Keeler and Cerro Gordo where Brent Underwood is building a community in this silver mining ghost town. Like you, he is another favorite TH-camr of mine! Keep on trucking!
Wow I have never seen anything like this before, this was a very good learning experience for me.
So glad you stopped at Manzanar. It’s vitally important to never forget. A visit inside, with original radio broadcasts, films, and documentation is a sobering experience.
At the Lone Pine Visitor Center, it surprised me: no mention of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the Contiguous U.S. It’s clearly visible from there. And interesting to note that the highest point of elevation is only a hundred miles plus from the lowest elevation point, at Death Valley where you toured. Fun video, regardless. 😊
That area is nothing like Quartzite (imo). This area is SO much more scenic & a lot more history.
Thanks for the ride. I so enjoyed this.
Nice production as always. What a great road (bumps and all) talk about isolation. Back in late 1960's, that's all you seen in Gas station bathrooms, Borax soap. Yes, never knew about graveyard in Lone Pine, let alone the EQ..
Outstanding and interesting travels. Thank u for making this video
Luv your Vids tommorrow (6-15-24) i"ll be 3\4 of a century years old Yay!!!
Happy Birthday Harold
Thanks for stopping by at Manzanar! Way back in 1942 I was there and some years later me and my family along with other families were transported to Tule Lake concentration camp.... so stop by at Tule lake in Northern California.... life in the camp were not as bad as Auscĥwit..but constitutional rights to US born japanese American were gone ! kaput....sad!,...
Thanks for the ride along, Russ! I was in Death Valley just last year in April, still hot. I made that right turn to Betty. I will need to make that trip again.
some great trout fishing in LP
Hi russ thanks for the tour cool towns an movie history . Cheers mate🇦🇺
Glad you enjoyed it
I was at Badwater in January 2009.
