Selection of the best batsmen in a certain order is a very subjective view even coming from the greats themselves. Making runs, having a great average, piling up centuries constitute one set of criteria. Do will also take into consideration, the quality of the bowlers they played against, the different cricketing countries they were exposed to, the fact that there was a period when pitches were uncovered notwithstanding the weather, the quality of the bats and other cricket gears, the fact that those in the 60s and early 70s did not have helmets. If we can develop a statistical ju-jitsu to accommodate these other criteria, then our subjectivity may lessen. It is then when you begin to think about Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, Viv Richards, Weekes, Rohan Kanhai, Neil Harvey, Greg Chappelle, Dennis Compton, Peter May. Sir Donald has a phenomenal test record, but most of his cricket was played against England. Sir Garfield Sobers once rated Sunil Gavaskar above Sachin Tendulkar because of the "other" listed factors. At a "Colin Cowdrey" talks, Gavaskar, who saw Kanhai bat, and even played with in the world series, viewed him as the greatest batsman whom he saw upfront. He named his son after this West Indian maestro.
Please label correctly noty just to get clicks . This should be top 5 in last 30 years and then it still leaves much to de desired. Pointing. He is not even close to the top 10, he might make top 20. Kallis too doesn't make top 10 and I am South African. I put Lara at 3rd best West Indian batsmen and many West Indian cricket historians agree with me. Lara had many demons, his high backlift became problematic at times, And I always say about Lara he had the highest peak but lowest troughs of all great batsmen, hence Viv and Sobers are ahead of. The problem again with top 5 in last 30 years is including Bradman. Yes every de facto list will include Bradman. While I am not arguing that Bradman is not the greatest I can't tell with certainty. Considering wet and uncovered pitches, lack of body armour like your list uses today his record remains one of the great sporting anomalies. He did however get worked over by ythe only really quick bowler of his time, Larwood so there is that argument. 2) Sir Garfiled Sobers: Now here is a generational talent the likes of which we will never see again. The greatest left-hander of all time., he possesed the elegance and grace of a left-hander matched with power and precision. This man was born to play cricket, the most talented ever.H held records like highest test score, first-class 6 sixes in an over, greatest all-rounder ever and he was a precursor to WI dominance. 3) Sir Viv Richards f you ever want to see a person with aura, watch video's of VIv. Not skinny little Root or twitchy Smith, but this man oozed presence. The swagger he walked to the creae with chewing gum, cap, no helmet, fearless. But most importantly he had the game to back it up.He could dominate any bowling attack probably in all era's of cricket. He was a phenomenal short ball player, great off his legs and still had a cover drive to behold, he also dominated one-day cricket when it emerged. His score of 188 will forever be remembered. Ther fact that he didn't chase numbers is a further testament to hus greatness. 4) Sachin Tendilkar: I suppose from this list you know his body of work. LOngevity, technical brilliance and ability to handle public pressure sets him apart. Not as dominant as the other 3 but his records may never be broken. 5) Sir Jack Hobbs: The greatest opener ever when opening the batting was a difficult business. He scored 2 centuries in 1976 on the deadest pitch in the Caribbean, Port of Spain, which was as dead as the dead pitches in India, and 1 century in 1983 in the 6th Test in India. Either way,all of his 13 and not 14 centuries, as stated by you, were acquired on completely flat pitches. Thanks for taking the bait.
Folly is the reason for most recent memory and less of the past. The whole lot of BS that comes out of a narcissist is all about themselves. Sure enough! Don is great. But then he is not the only one. People who watched Gary Sobers, Viv Richards, Jack Hobbs, Wally Hammond would have their opinion too. They played in a time when Cricket was a gentleman's game; no pitch fixing to suit batsman; no mediocre bowling and certainly no ball tampering. Like many, they were in the past and faded away into oblivion. Likewise, within a generation, Lara, Ricky, Alan and Sachin will fade away too.

have anyone seen Lara's match winnings 153 against Australia (Mcgrath, Gillespi, Shane Warn) in 4th innings? from 91 for 5 wickets, he did 200 runs partnership wit last 5 players and win the match with one wicket remaining ( Hats off to Walsh for playing 4 balls of Gillespi and gave Lara a chance). One can only dream such a innings.
There are many such innings these guys hv played in TEST. All I cannot put here. Go and search on you tube.
Go and see them first then I am sure u people will think differently with cricketing mind and not by heart.
Show me sachin's a single innings (like these guys played )where he played and win test match in 2nd innings run chase except one against Pakistan 139 which he got out playing a stupid shot when only 15 runs required and 4 wickets in hand. Now Don't say his back was paining. No excuse please.
Scoring 100 or 1000 century is not imp but how you scored, in which situation u scored that is imp.
Wisden cricket hv not considered his single century out of 100 in their top list. Sachin completely failed.
Thanks god Lara played in the same era in which sachin played so we came to know the huge gap between the gr8 lara and sachin.
LARA u r GENIUS.
Many Many love to the Gr8 LARA from India.
All the gr8s in LARA and sachin's era put LARA above sachin.

You were right when you said Indians don't know much about cricket! If you knew anything about cricket at all,you would know that Gavaskar scored only 5 centuries against the W I(all on dead, lifeless pitches) and not the ridiculous sum of 14 you have suggested.

that's what i said we r just spectator. Do not hv cricketing knowledge. Thanks for proving it. Also, Thanks tht atleast u know Gavaskar is a cricketer. Henceforth will not reply people like u who do not know anything abt cricket.
@arunkamble6691 Why did you reply then, since you said you won't reply?! Your midget god, Gavaskar, only scored either 3, or was it 5 centuries against the 4 horsemen. He scored 2 centuries in 1976 on the deadest pitch in the Caribbean, Port of Spain, which was as dead as the dead pitches in India, and 1 century in 1983 in the 6th Test in India. All the other centuries he scored came against second-rate attacks, in which the 4 horsemen were not party to because of Kerry Packer's circus,or were partially party to due to injury of one or more bowlers. Either way,all of his 13 and not 14 centuries, as stated by you, were acquired on completely flat pitches. Thanks for taking the bait.
Where is sunil gavaskar
Too many legends in Test cricket
You seem to be one of the FEW people who has any idea of Cricket History - the rest of the comments here come from ignorant people who only know about cricketers of THEIR OWN TIME.
Ricky Tomos Ponting
Absolutely!
I am really tired of this nonsense about the greatest test batsmen of all times, I would like to know what is the criteria of greatness. If it is the most runs and centuries overall the long time that you play, but some of the batsmen that you guys are talking about. They does not have enough runs to be classified as great batsmen, the top 5 batsmen in test cricket. Tendulkar one, Ponting, 2 Jacques Kallis 3 ,Sangakkara 4, This guy from England is 5 .Lara is not in the top 5 batsmen leading scorer in test, there are only 4 batsmen in test cricket with 2 triple centuries in test cricket Bradman, Lara, Gayle and Sewag, so let me hear how you guys is going to defined greatness by the amount of runs or by recording.
We would need to factor in a lot of stuffs before thinking of making such a list. At the end of the day, what weightage you give to factors is going to be purely subjective
Tendulkar is the best batsman both in test cricket and ODI .

Sir Viv is the best he did it everywhere and in the three decades that saw the most fearsome bowling ever every seen.
People seem to forget Sir Viv faced all the West Indies greats from the 70's to the 90's every single season on some or the quickest wickets on the planet and not the dust bowls in India and Sri Lanka.

Not in the best bowling era of cricket and not to dominates almost 3 decades.

Like most modern batsman their career totals have been inflated by filling their boots against the lesser teams Sir Viv never played against
Lara averages against the minnows
Zimbabwe 55.5
Sri Lanka 86.54
Bangladesh 86.50
Remove those and his averages Is lower than Sir VIV's against much lesser bowling on friendlier wickets
Where Tendulkar become the god of cricket..unu fucking fool .he only has one bag a hundred.nothing else . Have Tendulkar ever made 250 in test .

Unless you are a student of the game and familiar with its History, you and others like you are in no position to name the greatest players of ALL time. All you can do is name the best players YOU HAPPEN to know about.
