"Bury My Mother Pale and Slight" | Myla's Song

- "The great gates have been sealed. None shall enter. None shall leave." An interpretation of Myla's song based on the tune she hums. With additional verses, and a chorus inspired by Hollow Knight's main theme. Sung by me (at 2am) (with a cold) (also I am not a trained singer by any means) - that said, I'm actually pretty happy with how this turned out!
Context: When the city was condemned, were the miners still in Crystal Peak left outside? Did they wonder what happened to their families left within? Did they sing for them? For the knight and dreamers whose memorial they may once have seen? For the desperate hope for a brighter future? Even just a chance to mourn?
Additional Context: The really fun thing about rounds is how one by one the voices inevitably die off until there is only one remaining. :)

[Responses to FAQ below.] I'm still entirely blown away by how many people liked this - thank you all so much! My relationship with my voice is complicated to say the least, and it took a good bit of encouragement to put this out where people could see it (not to mention that it was recorded on a 10-year-old laptop's built-in mic by an amateur who was pausing to hack up his lungs between verses at the time - which is to say, uh, the quality could _definitely_ be better).
→ *_Will you put this on Spotify?_* In theory, I'd very much like to! Unfortunately, the process of getting a song on Spotify as an independent creator is... complicated, to say the least. (See the bottom of this FAQ for more details here.)
→ *_Can I make a cover/animation/literally anything along this line?_* Oh gosh, absolutely, have at it, y'all are amazing, _please_ send me a link if you do.

→ *_Can we get sheet music?_* Yes! A very, _very_ rough copy can be found here: drive.google.com/file/d/13GdkkPtj-qaxW1mr6dfEXyJ535_umCn-/view?usp=sharing -- It's rather messy; the recording's harmonies were all done sort of on the fly, and I don't currently have access to the laptop it was made on, so this was done by ear and by memory (and it includes a couple of things not technically in the recording, like places where I _would_ have had another part mirroring the melody up one octave... if I had the vocal range for it). *Edit*: My musical theory is shoddy at best, but thanks to brandonschwaiger4495 for confirming that it's in the key of C♯ minor.
→ *_Who does X lyric represent?_* For the first two verses? Who knows! Those are Myla's original lines, and they're entirely up to interpretation. (There's been a lot of discussion about them in the comments - take a look, it's neat.) For the later verses, in order: Traitor Lord; his daughter and Ze'mer; Sly, Oro, Mato, and Sheo; Nailsmith; Bretta (or Quirrel - see below); Tiso; Monomon; Lurien; Herrah; either the Pale King or the Radiance (or the Knight, or you-the-player)... depending on who you blame. For what it's worth, I don't see these lyrics as _literally_ referring to these characters - the miners would have never known Oro, for instance - but rather to a set of sort of... folk-song archetypes. The role they play. A fool, a traitor, a sage with three sons. Nameless, faceless, and buried.
[Note: While I'd initially meant it to be Bretta, someone suggested the "writer" could also mean Quirrel - I love that idea! Quirrel wasn't explicitly referenced only because I try to avoid thinking about his fate. :') ]
→ *_Does the "ask them thrice?" line reference talking to Tiso before his death?_* Yeah. I personally met Tiso three times in-game before finding him in KE. :) In retrospect, some people pointed out that the same could be said for the Nailsmith - had I realized this, I'd probably have made the second line of that verse reference Cloth instead, to complete the "Talk to them a bunch and then they die" trifecta. Ah, well.
→ *_Will you make more things like this?_* No idea! This was utterly spontaneous. Have I written a folk song based off of the tune Cornifer hums? Yes. Am I likely to record it and upload it to be heard by the faceless masses? Uncertain. Possibly. Having a harder time with harmonies for that one. We'll see.
→ *_You mentioned more details regarding Spotify?_*_ Right, so, as I'm not part of any record label, I'd need to go through a music distributor to upload a song there. Having looked into that process, this would require more time and effort than I'm currently willing to spend. It's not a question of copyright - Man On The Internet's _Hollow Knight_ songs are on Spotify, so I'm pretty sure this falls under fair use - just an issue of administration. This is a fun fansong made in my spare time, and while getting it on Spotify for the sake of the people who've wanted to listen to it there _would_ be lovely, I haven't yet had the energy and drive to seriously work towards that. But hey, never say never!

Aside from seeing Myla chipping away, I also imagined a group of people with shovels that are digging large gravepits in rhythm of the song as with a line of people carrying a body or bodies that represent each lyrical line of the song to throw in the pit and themselves after, still singing. And during the chorus as it start to segue into the next verse, the pit of the previous verse is covered while the next pit is dug up. As for the outro, the diggers part ways revealing a large number of largely dug grave pits.

The fact I immediately knew the "Bury the sage with his sons all three" line is in reference to Sly; Oro, Mato and Sheo is a bit shocking given my tiredness rn

The smith and his blood soaked art
The Fool with their shield stained red

The subtle jab at the fact we didn't know if Tiso was dead or not until the Godmaster DLC really sells how much effort was put into these lyrics. This is so well done, and it pops up in my recommended right at the time when I was curious about what the missing lyrics could've been like.

@@ManioqV ‘twas an honor
the inclusion of bretta is hilarious. all these legendary figures and some random unfortunate who wandered into the caverns
My guesses as to which character each of the new lines is supposed to be referencing.
"Oh, bury the traitor marred by pride"
The Traitor Lord.
"Bury his daughter at her lover's side"
The Traitor Lord's daughter, the Grey Mourner's lost love.
"Bury the sage and his sons all three"
Nailsage Sly and his three apprentices.
"Oh, bury the Smith and his blood-soaked art"
The Nailsmith.
"Bury the writer with a broken heart"
This is most likely Bretta, who has a crush on the Vessel (and later on Zote if he is saved by the Vessel) to the point of writing fanfiction about them, but later grows disillusioned with them both and leaves. She's not really "heartbroken" though, as realizing what a phony Zote is makes her realize that she needs to work to find love rather than waiting for it to fall into her lap, and subsequently leaves Dirtmouth to go on her own adventure. But I guess there may not have been more accurate words that would have fit into the song easily. "Lovesick heart," maybe?
"Bury the fool with their shield stained red"
Tiso, who wielded a shield and dies at the Colosseum of Fools.
"Oh, bury the teacher in her hallowed hall,
bury the watcher in his tower tall,
bury the beast in her silken cave,"
The three Dreamers; Monomon the Teacher, Lurien the Watcher, and Herrah the Beast.
"Then bury the one who dug their graves."
The Pale King, probably.
In the last one I think more in The Radiance, before you ask me why,is because The 3 Dreemers where needed to deafet her,and well-we know what happened next xd
Edit:And The Pale King I think it was more in the verse of “Bury the beggar with his shinning crown” And well- The Pale *King*
The background is faint, but I think it hints of which character is talked about in the verse. While “Bury the one who dug their graves.” was being played, we see the king, or at least what’s left of him.
Notice how Zote is never mentioned. This is because he is perfect and will never die.

This is a really nice cover of Myla's theme. The multiple voices work really well, as well as the pickaxes in the background. The lyrics work well with the original tune. Sorta makes me want to do a cover.
The fact that you can hear the radiance's voice get slightly louder the more you go into the song just to signify the workers getting infected is just, *CHEF'S KISS*
Haven't seen anyone mention it so ima put it out there. I think the "One who dug their graves" might be The Knight.
They fit the description of The one who bured the Dreamers and it would be thematic for the song to end with the death of the Main Character. Also this song feels faintly infection-friendly so calling for the death of the Radiance would be a bit off.
Either way, thats what i think. This song is a masterpiece

of course there are more but this struck me as the coolest
"Bury the smith with his blood-soaked art" - Nailsmith
"Bury the writer with a broken heart" - Bretta probably
"Bury the Fool with their shield stained red" - Tiso
all of which are characters that *may or may not* die in the game in some way, depending on your actions - "Ask them thrice to be sure that they are dead!"
(yes I'm aware Bretta never actually dies, but she is partially Infected when you first find her. thus, if the Infection is not destroyed/contained and the player does not fond her, Bretta would become fully Infected. though we never see those circumstances in-game.)
(also, Tiso can be kept from dying if you just never go to the Colosseum)
"bury the Fool with their shield stained red" - Tiso
If you noticed in the backgroumd on the fool you see Tiso's name, meaning they were talking to him

Bury the daughter with her shell of white.
Bury the master who abused his right.
And bury the seeker who was lost to night.
Oh, bury the lady who played her part.
Bury the king with a bleeding heart.
Bury the tribute, the one who failed,
And bury the ghost, the child of pale.

Gotta love how the worsened voice from the cold adds to this song so much.
Ah, good. Time to listen to this on repeat for the next three days as the Hollow Knight brain rot consumes me once again.
WHAT this is SO COOL
The singing is great, sounds very ghostly and that's such a vibe for this song in particular :D and the added parts fit *seamlessly* with the original bits we get in the game!!!
I actually need to ask, hypothetically, do you think I could use some of this (probably one of the verses that are already in the game) for a short hollow knight animation/animatic/pmv?
Thank you so much! And absolutely feel free.
I think the song gave me brainrot, it's so so so good. How did I not find this before?
To make a little light of the situation, you being sick kind of fits the theme of a miners song, as I can't imagine the respiratory systems of the miners work particularly well with crystal dust in them. ;)
They've got crystal lung
Including subtle noises like the crystal guardian's shrieks was a really nice detail
Interesting framing with this song being basically the radiance hit list.
Working with this idea I’d like to decipher the og lyrics and who all it’s referring to
Oh bury my mother pale and slight
Bury my father with his eyes shut tight
Bury my sisters 2 by 2
And then when your done let’s bury me too
Every single bug, mothers fathers, brothers and sisters will die for having forgotten the radiance
Weirdest inconsistency is sisters specifically but myla is the one singing it and it would be very simple to change the lyric depending on what siblings you have, so maybe myla only has sisters.
Bury the knight with her broken nail
Either the vessel if the radiance could figure out the HKs lost gender since they are a knight with a broken nail .
and even being the new infection point of the radiance, the radiance would probably still prefer not to be sealed in her ancient primordial enemy
It’s either that or hornet at which point it’s asking for the death of the pale kings only living child.
And I guess the broken nail is to say that both her and her weapon are broken.
Bury the lady lovely and pale
White lady. Pretty simple
Bury the priest in his tattered gown
It’s the wrong gender but I’m going to take a bet at the seer
The only remaining moth Kin that betrayed the radiance
And the tattered gowns might be referring to either the idea that the seer cast away their holy wear.
That or that the seers clothes are quite old at this point( hard to tell due to the seer never being seen that well.)
It’s either that or miss prophet for some reason
Bury the beggar in his shingling crown
The pale king
Shining crown is the most obvious connector and I’d say he’s a beggar because
1.the radiance refuses to acknowledge him as a king
2. Maybe it’s refuting to the way the pale king begged the dreamers to help him
All speculation but still pretty cool idea to further it by literally demanding every remaining living creature in hollow nest be buried
BRAVO! BRAVO!

I was just trying to do some mindless work whilst listening to whatever TH-cam wanted to play next. (Hoping it doesn't repeat the same freaking music videos). But then, that familiar little tune... i soon began to hum along to the crystal hums.
This is utterly underrated, capturing that feel of folklore within the game itself. And as miners, it makes sense that they only have slight discriptions of those within the very same kingdom. Yet, they know that they are as much stuck within the walls just like themselves.
Love it~
This in my opinion is one of the best adaptations of myla's song simply because it fits hollow knight's atmosphere
there’s a few references that there’s no way the miners would have known about, but I have personally decided that this is 90% cannon
Amazing
the musicality of including the rounds on the lines that have repeating phrases (describing everyone's deaths) gave me so many chills! I've always liked playing and singing rounds like that in my music classes, and it's not often anymore that I hear them in music, so this was awesome! I love this interpretation of myla's song!!
by far the best interpretation of the myla song
this is such a great song, i love how you managed to capture the original melody and put it into an actual, functional round. the performance is great despite your illness, you really managed to imbue it with the spirit of a worksong - it sounds like a chorus of miners, all carrying this tune while they mindlessly hollow the mountain. bravo!
I’m a year late but I LOVE the overlapping lyrics, it’s SO good, I love how it sounds like an actual song the miners would sing to themselves while mining the crystals!!
Seeing this so much later, but I need to express appreciation for something I haven't seen mentioned in the comments yet.
The lyrics that refer to the player character and/or the Hollow Knight can work for both, and have very different interpretations.
The Radiance-infested crystals hum about the (Hollow) Knight that will bring the day, the Light. But on another level, there are prophecies of a Wielder that will bring a more metaphorical day, the end of this torment, the Knight.
The fact Myla's scream and the Radiance lines up with the knight coming and bringing the day could support both.
And then in the Dreamers' verse the One who dug their grave has even more simultaneous meanings. The Pale King is the one that concocted that scheme, the Hollow Knight and Radiance the reason it was set up in the first place, and then the Knight is the one to put them in their grave.
I've seen much speculation and interpretation on who's referred to in this comment section for these parts, but the most striking part is that it's both at once, reinforcing the parallels in the game and story.
Great work there!
The fact that this song is so relaxing despite what is being sung very well done

Damn, this makes me wish they went with this tune in Hallownest Vocalized. I like the one they went with, but damn, this is really good.
The fact they managed to make parts of the songs tune incorporate the main theme is just genius
How has this not taken off yet
YESS ITS ON TH-cam!!! Good sir I’m going to listen to this for the next many hours oh my goodness
The vibes are immaculate
Your voice, lyrics, all of it is absolutely incredible thank you so much for sharing your creation!!!!
Jeez what a banger, we do need a looping version :D
If we were to get into other games
Bury the builder with his blood stained art
Bury the master with his profaned part
Bury the king with his reign of tears
His subjects will plead “it’s been five years”
Instead of reign of tears it should be
Bury the king, who claims “change is near”
Bury the architect challenge-tried
Bury his challenge seeking lover by his side
Bury the writer of what chose brings, who’s every word is heeded by the king.
What game is this?
@creativename3996 it’s Geometry Dash
Let me try one:
Oh, bury the queens in their fortress great
Bury the liar full of hate
Bury the dreamers in their metal frames
And once we're done, we'll bury the plague
Lord God Almighty this is so *haunting*
WE NEED AN ANIMATION OF THIS MASTERPIECE
Dude, best variation to this song ive heard. You did wonderfully
i love that the background footage changes depending on the lyric, thats such a cool touch
I love how it mentions a ton of the NPCs in this. It's great attention to detail and I love it.
I like this very much. Thank you
THIS SO GOOOOOD
What the actual crap why did it take me an entire YEAR to stumble across this absolute masterpiece-
UNDERRATED AF MAN THIS VIDEO NEEDS TO BE SEEN BY A LOT OF PEOPLE

these lyrics are actually incredible
SOOOO COOOL
I lost this for a while and was so upset until someone reclogged it on Tumblr ! Such a treat!
The harmonyyyssss and unisooonnnsss ❤❤ THE PICKAXE
This is one of my favourite songs ever. It reaches straight to the heart and perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere of the Hollow Knight.
I know this song is a year old, but…
You can tell who the song is referring to from the background. Its easier to see with high brightness, you can see the traitor lord fight when it says “Bury the traitor, marred by pride” and then the grave in the queens gardens at “Bury his daughter at her lovers side”. “Bury the sage and his sons all three”, shows Slys shop, and the next line shows the animation for training with Oro and Mato (And its in beat with the music!). “Bury the smith with his blood soaked art” shows the animation for upgrading your weapon (The strikes are also in line with the music). “Bury the writer with a broken heart” has the knight landing in Bretta’s dream, (and you land also in beat with the song, its great). “Bury the fool with his shield stained red” has Tiso talking with the knight at the well in dirtmouth.
Each of the dreamers lines has them where they are found in game and “bury the one who dug their graves” is the white palace, where you find the Pale King.
100% the best adaptation of Mylas song, this needs more attention, its amazing!
This is Haunting... So glad I stumbled on it
This is so good.
There's lots of great phrase turning, but one that really stuck out for some reason was "mourn until morning comes".
Just had such a satisfying rhythm to it.
Holy crap this is actually really catchy. I was taping my foot to the beat the whole time
I love this so much! I can feel that spirit of all this miners who lost theirself in all this crystal hums
Why had i never realized this is the pov of the bugs trapped OUTSIDE of hallownest
love this song and how most of the references are characters, the only one i cant figure out is the priest in his tattered gown.
It could be the Snail Shaman because he’s the most “priest” character I can think of, but it could also be Confessor Jiji, also a “priest” character
I always thought that this line was referencing Soul Master, he's wearing some kind of a robe after all. But it seems to be exactly that, since then the whole verse is referencing Pale King's court (Dryya, White Lady, Soul Master and himself, in that order).
This is criminally underrated
Now i wish this was on spotify 😭i lovw this
This is awesome! I have been wanting to see a version of this based on the tune Myla hums for a while, and you did a fabulous job!
This song gives me shivers it is amazing
Nothing short of hypnotizing!
I don’t usually like songs derived from video games, but this is amazing. Hauntingly beautiful.
How dare this not be not Spotify
This is beautiful.
Oh boy. This song lives rent free in my mind now
just discovered this song and i must say:
haunting
I love the fact that verses each refere to other character. Bury the traitor marred by pride is traitor lord, Burry his daughter at her lovers side is zeemer and the mantis. Bury the sage and his sons all three is of course the sly. And at every last verse is knight speaking of his death.
I listen to this like at least once a week. If it was on Spotify I would genuinely listen to it so much.
This should be on Spotify its so good
this masterpiece deserves a billion views
😶🌫😶🌫
holy FUCK man this song is brilliant i love it so much
2:15 The traitor marred by pride is the gray mourner’s lover, the sage and sons all 3 are Sly, Mato, Oro, and Sheo.
The traitor is the traitor lord and her daughter. Your right about the sage tho
ok but who is "the writer with a broken heart" that's the only reference i didn't understand. it's not cornifer, i don't think it's quirrel, mask maker doesn't make sense, maybe the hunter??? cause he's got an empty heart (maybe) and he writes in the hunters journal?
@@Phantasmans that's bretta
That’s Bretta, she writes poetry and thinks you broke her heart@@Phantasmans
@@TtBeam His. The traitor lord was the only brother.
This goes hard ngl
