Not really Poseidon rarely takes his anger out on mortals unless they really piss him off. That is mostly Zeus or Appolo and his sister. Shit even Athena is more prissy than him usually. The only times i can think of for poseidon to be temperamental enough to pull shit like this is they here and with Atlantis.

Think what I like about this one is how *inhuman* Poseidon is. His face as a human is skull-like, a pale brow and hollow cheeks around monochromatic eyes and a beard that frames his lips apart from his jaws, like teeth. And when he shifts into a horse, he moves fluidly, standing like a statue that shatters the laws of motion when he shifts.
Poseidon isn't an especially powerful humanoid here. Poseidon is an aspect of reality and fantasy, reminders of death and fear. Trying to dance around him with words means he teaches you that his vows, like water too, can be unyielding.

There are people arguing in the comments about morality and justice, but ultimately Poseidon is just angry. You can't reason with an storm. There's no justification or logical debate which can make a typhoon change its course. That's the essence of Poseidon here, he's an angry storm, the backstory is just why he's angry, there's nothing Odysseys could say to calm him down, no more than he could talk down a thunderstorm.

yeah I agree, one of the big things I noticed. Poseidon here shifts so effortlessly between the forms. I think it's really nice depiction, he's more than any 1 form, but all of them, as much as he wants. He's a god, and he's not bound to anything. Also I think it just looks REALLY COOL. Also the part where he sinks the fleet really shows how powerful he is, he's not just a guy with storm powers, he IS the unyielding storm. HE sinks your fleets. Also at the beginning when he looks like a human, but his arm extends and deforms like flowing water, he IS the water. And you can't fight the water itself, it morphs into anything. It's soo good.

For people asking why Poseidon seems not to care about Odysseus hurting his son and wishing he’d just killed him, for ancient Greeks a death in battle was a glorious end. If Odysseus killed Polyphemus it would be honorable for him and by extension Poseidon. By leaving him maimed and humiliated, he’s humiliated Poseidon, and for a god that’s the worst disservice you can give them.

Poseidon is not blind to the fact that they were trying to survive since his son was eating his men, which I think is poignant is that he is not mad that they tried to survive but rather that they let him live to be the fool rather than a foe worthy of being killed. Odysseus was well known as a clever man, to die to someone considered a hero is an honor in itself. Glory is not just for the the survivor but also the slain, for one to sing praises of deeds the foe has to be one of equal or greater power for it to be worthy of such songs. The cyclops would have been praised for his strength even if killed, instead he lives blind and reknown as a fool rather than a worthy opponent.

@@deliabailey7422fun fact: he was also king of the gods back then. Mycanean Greece put more stock in cthonic gods than Hellenistic Greece did. Any gods associated with the underworld at all were given higher importance than those without underworld connections. Poseidon, being the underworld's king, was thus given top spot, while Zeus' domain of the sky, basically as far away from the underworld as you could get, left him with little authority in the pantheon.
Things got shuffled around during the Grecian Dark Ages, and when we got to the other side, Zeus was now at top billing with the epithet Panhelle'nius, basically labelling him as king of everything, and Poseidon was split between his domain of the seas, and Hades as the new underworld king. However, Poseidon's reign of king of the dead wasn't fully forgotten, honored in his title of The Earthshaker.

I honestly always read that line as desperation on Odysseus part, he’s grasping for anything and gets reminded of the fairly lighthearted song about the bag (until it wasn’t but still), so he both escapes and taunts Poseidon by doing that

But as Poseidon said there are 43 left, so how to save those remaining 43 who only live because they're on Odysseus' own ship and Poseidon saved him for last...?
By saying/doing something so unexpected Poseidon doesn't have the time to react before they're out. The way he delivers the line is jarring but that, I feel, is because it's intended to be. It needs to make a GOD go "??????" for a long enough moment that the remaining wind can drag them out of immediate reach.

Lmao, using all those technical words to make a non-argument and then insult the quality.
Bathos is used as an intentional anti-climax, a way of immediate subversion to segue into the next part where no clean transition exists. For Odysseus of all characters, it works the best. He's still a soldier. Everyone is dead. His ship is the only one that remains. But HE is still alive and he still has some men. He is an optimistic bastard by design. He remembers what he has, sees Poseidon's hubris as a weakness, then uses the tone shift to confuse the God enough to escape. With Poseidon DECIDING to let him go, with the sinister threat (Which is contained in the musical stings of the piano) that this escape is temporary and that Poseidon won't forget.
Tone is carried by the instrumentation as much as the lyrics and their delivery. In comparison to the total piece, there's a more clear transition away from brief triumph to grief. It's only glaring because this is one song out of a series, so there's no continuation. You're condemning a part without the context of the whole.
Would it work in a normal play? Probably not, but Musicals don't function the same as plays. They have different rules and standards. So take some time to learn those rules and standards before passing harsh judgement.
These words are probably wasted and it will just get countered by semantics, grammatical mistakes, or just calling me a "Fan boy" or whatever like I've seen all around the criticisms that have been confronted. But I figured I'd throw them out there anyways for those who wish to either have a dialogue or see a perspective that goes into detail as to why these things work.

      @michaeldeighton323 ปีที่แล้ว +33

@@CoolColton947 dang, bro. That's gonna register as a solid "yikes" from me. If you don't want to be labeled a fanboy, maybe don't post a comment dripping with obvious resentment that someone dared criticise something you liked.
Yes, I am indeed aware of the meaning of the words I used. Very understandable that you would assume I was just ignorantly using them to try and sound smart, I do get that a lot, but that would I hope be a largely incorrect assumption in this case.
To be clear, I just listened to the version sans animatic again (this song is really worming into my brain). It really clarified that my issue with that line is primarily due to how Odysseus was animated. The gigantic face-splitting grin, mainly.
Hopefully that was sufficient to communicate that I'm not just shitting on stuff for kicks. If not... eh, I've probably spent too much time on this thread already.

personally i think this part of the song is actually mirroring to a similar part in Polyphemus that follows the same dynamic. Odysseus and his crew fuck up, they apologise to whomever they pissed off, Odysseus makes some stupid ass smug joke ("Im so glad we see eye to eye" and "We took no pleasure in his pain" when everyone was deadass excited about killing the cyclops😭), and the guy they pissed off finally revealing that they didn't plan to spare them at all.
plus, i really like the way the musical thwarts Odysseus' hubris (pride/arrogance in greek) so much to the point where he never even considers that he had messed up not when he let the cyclops live, but when he revealed his name.
in the odyssey, the entire lesson is "don't be fucking cocky cause u aint that smart", and his greatest flaw was his arrogance. in the musical, i think the reason Poseidon doesn't mention Odysseus' hubris is because gods are by nature very arrogant, and to them taunting and mocking is only natural (we can see them mocking mortals constantly: when Zeus uses the wordplay to insinuate the infant, when Poseidon throws Odysseus around, etc.). that's why Poseidon only emphasises on Odysseus' hypocritical "mercy".
but in "Monster", we can see that Odysseus is so fucking arrogant he can't see he's arrogant. in fact, just how he compares himself to fucking eldritch horrors, immortal sorceresses, and a whole ass god, that highlights his pride. he's not willing to admit that he killed his men when he revealed his name. he's not willing to admit that he messed up, so he insists on how he is too "merciful".
i think it's intentional, because in 'Luck Runs Out', Eurylochus does mention how Odysseus relies on wit. while it could be interpreted only that he was always trying to trick everyone, the reason first and foremost that he even is running around tricking everyone is because he is arrogant. an average mortal wouldn't go for Odysseus' tricks not only because they aren't as smart, but also because... the enemies are divine. they're monsters and gods from the mythos, and those who are humble would know that its not their place to even attempt to fool them.
we can see that since the beginning of the play, in "The Horse and The Infant". when Zeus orders Odysseus to kill the baby, before anything else, Odysseus starts suggesting tricks instead of something straightforward ("raise him as my own, or send him far away from home, make sure his past is never known"). later, it isn't his guilt, or his mercifulness, that separates him from Athena. it is his pride: even as Athena scolds him, he ends up insulting HER.
so i feel that luck runs out was basically Eurylochus trying to bring Odysseus back to earth, reminding him that they were all just mortals after all (how much longer til your great days cease)
thanks for coming to my ted talk 😭

@@amberx1273 I keep seeing people pointing to The Horse And The Infant as an example of Odysseus being arrogant and I honestly don't see it at all.
I mean, yes, he is arrogant and overconfident and makes a number of fuckups and his trash-talking of Athena was ill advised even if he probably had a point, but trying to find alternatives to "kill the baby" instead of just immediately going along with it is the kind of arrogance we need a lot more of in this world. Without the ability to try and come up with "tricks" like that, humans would basically just be pawns doing whatever the gods wanted with no agency whatsoever.
If anything, that particular example shows a good balance of realism and arrogance: Odysseus does his best to find a way out of the situation, but he doesn't actually try any of those other methods in the end.

Poseidon's horse-form design when he's committing mass murder is the worst thing ever, and by that I mean it's the best thing ever because it's so awesomely horrific. The way gods in your animatics flow so naturally from being human-seeming to being the exact opposite of that is so excellent, because they aren't human at all, they're forces of nature come to ruin your life and live in your nightmares. All joking aside, I get what you mean. Even disregarding the potential symbolism of the horse’s face made by the space between his facial hair, (which could also have been a happy little accident), his human form seems wild and untamed, with his long hair flowing down unhindered and his gaunt face only aids the look of a fierce man who does not care about the thoughts or feelings of others. Even when he looks human, he still looks “other” in a way, because he does not look like he could be a part of most groups that people usually consider “civilized”, or even like part of a group at all, rather than a sort of “lone wolf” within the wilderness.
Idk I just really love how emphasized it is that he is “other” even if he looks human.

@@ilyte1I see your point. Personally, I think that it means more towards Poseidon's disgust. When he says the line you quoted I believe he is referring to Odysseus trying to be clever. The Gods in Greek mythology never go back on their word. At least not that I can remember. Usually they lay out a deal for the mortal with strict conditions, like with Hades and Orpheus.
So, with that said, I think Poseidon genuinely would have let Odysseus go had he actually apologized. I mean, Odysseus is a prideful man, but he's earned it because he is actually clever. But Poseidon knows this. He's watching for it. So when he says "the line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible," seems like he's calling Odysseus out for trying to pull one over on him. In a very "You really tried that. With me. After everything I just showed you. I can't tell if you were being hopeful that I wouldn't catch that or are just so naive you don't truly understand the situation you're in." And when Odysseus didn't apologize, after Poseidon clearly laid out the terms of the deal, he followed through with what he said would happen. He sank the ships and drowned most of the men.
