    This is my top 5 cover of hers. The first one that truly impressed me not because of her age this time but in spite of it. Her technique was and is always excellent. Every time I watched this, I have to keep reminding myself that she was only 7. It’s a solid pro inhabiting an itty bitty little thing. The stick work and the quiet upper body were the ones that made me noticed the awesome technique that maximizes her efficiency therefore generates a cleaner and more powerful strokes. The control was amazing. She’s always focused so even a little booboo doesn’t fazed her. This piece is by the legendary Char and it’s quite challenging with the dynamics and tricky pattern but she tackled it effortlessly. This kid is a force.
    Thanks Van for the reaction. 👍🥁🤘🏼

      The fluidity in her shoulders is fascinating when she expresses power and subtlety in the same phrase. She won "hit like a girl" back then (age 8 or so) but these days she could be a contender for "hit like a grown man".

    It's one of my favorites - 7 years

    motivated. I am in awe!

    Most of the growing kids' musicians tends to play at a very high level for their favorite songs that they listen to a lot, such as anime songs and pop songs, but their performance level drops for songs that they don't know well or don't like much (assignments by drum teacher etc...).
    However in Yoyoka's case, she plays at the same level no matter what the piece is. I think this song is not one that a 7 year old would like, but she plays it with great joy. That's because Yoyoka loves the drums more than the song. I think this is the big difference between Yoyoka and other kids musicians.

  • @Trev81
    @Trev81 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think that point you made about the mistakes adding flavor to the music is so true. Now with midi instruments and digital composition software, you can MAKE music sound perfect. But it doesn't have the human element to it. Hearing the squeak of the guitarist's fingers sliding up and down the strings, hearing notes continue to carry in the background after they've been played and bleed into other notes, and having some of the timing be just slightly off by a millisecond or so, adds so much personality and style to music that you just don't get when you cut all of those elements out. Great reaction and analysis man.

    Good to see you have the same attitude towards mistakes as I do. Being a relatively new drummer I've made a few while gigging, I always apologize to the boys after the gig but 9 times out of 10 they hadn't noticed. In my many years as a bass player I would make a point of playing one bum note just to see who was listening, The guitar player would growl at me and I would just stand there smiling as I found the one bass player in the 2000 strong crowd who noticed lol. Awesome reaction dude, as always, Yoyoka is beyond words.

    She got me interested in drum parts in music. I see what a great drummer she is when I see how awkward other drummers(kids and adults) look. The way she hits, grabs her sticks, moves her wrists, even the way she sits, everything about her is just perfection.

    • @kurtiswichmann4699
      @kurtiswichmann4699 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, my dad was a big band drummer in the 50s. Like most kids of musicians I wasn't too attentive. Watching Yoyoka has made me aware of the drummer's responsibility. I play guitar and I think it's helping me understand timing better.

  • @Jesse-B
    @Jesse-B 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm guessing you've watched Yoyoka's birthday series, she released another one yesterday. It seems Japan's finest musicians (and they are mighty fine) are clamouring to play music with her. You said in another reaction that professional musicians look at her and see a fellow professional, but I think even non-musicians can sense her brilliance, she has this kind of humble charisma. Heaven forbid I should wish old age on her, but I can't wait til she's grown up and touring with her own band, I would travel to Japan just to see and hear them live.

    At some point, someone will put together a long reaction video of Yoyoka covers from ages 6 to now to view her development. Of course, if you've gone down the rabbit hole you know, but it would still be so enjoyable because, to borrow a sports metaphor (but only for the greats), her floor was high and her ceiling is outta sight.

    Hey Vand, really enjoyed your reaction, and I like the way you let a performance play through the first time, and then break it down for the viewer (especially us non- or wannabe drummers). Recommend you watch another amazing video from her jazz-fusion phase when she was 7, the Senri Kawaguchi piece “Onyx”. It is a rare, live performance video of her playing with a band, in a club, and is perhaps an even better example of what a pro she was at that age.

    In regards to "flubs". For anyone that wants to really know how good she is (not that anyone doubts it), play her famous "Good Times, Bad Times" video th-cam.com/video/91pz1E8pAOY/w-d-xo.html starting at 00:49 at .50 speed and watch at 00:50 how she almost drops the stick in her right hand by accidentally hitting it on the side of her drum after hitting the cymbal on her right. What a phenomenal save! Never lost her smile or the beat! I think most drummers would have dropped the stick. I never noticed it until "Wave Potter" did a reaction of it and caught it. Out of the millions of people that have watched this video, he is the only one I've seen that caught it (or at least mentioned it). He was quite impressed that she didn't drop the stick. Check out his channel also, he's a really nice guy (and friends with Vand3rHorst (right Nick?)) Both these guys are awesome reactors! We need both of them to point these things out or we just wouldn't see them.
