The thing that kills me is that Nyango is going so hard, smashing the sticks with the confidence of someone who knows what they're doing, who's done this for years and loves every second of it.

Don't be surprised by this. It's Japan. This is entirely predictable that a crowd of adults would be into a crazy ass rock show done by professional musicians in mascot costumes.
I've seen it happen a couple times in Osaka.
This is Japan. Shit like this happens sometimes, and it's always fantastic.
If you look at the signs in the back one was a town mascot competition/festival and others are just local festivals, so those wouldn't just be kid audiences.
lived in japan the last 9 years and counting, this is REALLY ordinary compared to some shows and events. imagine something, there’s probably a festival for it, no matter what, and it’s usually like a pretty big venue too

she's a cat character who represents a small town whose main source of economy is a giant apple farm/farms. the whole purpose of nyango star is to make kids want to eat more apples. it benefits the local economy and keeps the kids healthy i guess.
He is the inspirations of all the kids there. That town will soon have a whole new generation of healthy apple-eating metal drummers.

When Nyango Star is in town drumming, it is not for his own gain. It is to help support and uplift a town after suffering tragedy. The entirety of these "yuru-chara" mascots work this way, or something close to it.

It promotes tourism as well, and understandably so. When the covid stuff is over I will probably try and catch a show. Japan's domestic tourism industry is wild though.
I always wished we got a shot of the crowd here. I can just imagine a bunch of little kids crying and then that one having his first involuntary headbang and wondering what was happening to his body.

If you check the first video that went viral on Twitter, even before this one you'll see he was playing at a shopping mall, with kids.
But he's kind of famous in Japan and also draws an older crowd.

To be honest, as hilarious as it might look, this is impressive on at least 2 levels.
1st: The speed. This alone is already impressive to most of us, BUT there's one thing that makes it even more impressive, and that's
2nd: The costume! It's hot inside these costumes, yes, but I'm not talking about that. What makes it truly impressive is how obstructed his sight must be under there.

She's not wearing a cooling system under that? I'm worried about her overheating. And the smell of that's suit.
And there seem to not be separate fingers on the gloves.
Not to mention the reduced reach and movement in the suit.
In just a t shirt or tank top you've got nothing impeding movement. That suit? Damn.

The most interesting fact about these mascots is, apparently, when they are in the costume these people ARE the mascot. Some western news company was interviewing a representative of the district Nyango Star was from. They asked him who was in the costume and he got visibly uncomfortable and waved off the question/played dumb. I think they said it's bad luck to acknowledge there's a human in the costume or something.
That is fairly true across multiple nations when it comes to mascots and playing characters in front of kids in particular. It's almost sacred to keep character.
Since the time of Disneyland it became a deeply rooted tradition to never compromise on that if possible as other groups imitated Disney's business model.
And that model definitely reached Japan.

As a cello player, I’ve always been amazed by percussionists and drummers. The fact that they’re playing in a mascot costume with obscured vision is mind blowing to me. The talent is insane

FYI, the beginner drummer is Brett Chang, a violinist from TwoSetViolin. He has this series of videos attempting other instruments and miserably failing, super hilarious, howver, he's one helluva violinist :3

I went down a rabbit hole with these mascots, turns out there are kind of a lot of them, and many of them represent their city or municipality in one way or another. It's weird but also super sweet.
case in point: look up Soft Kuriinu
I think that I've seen them (on video, not irl) on the Japanese transport systems. Sometimes they will "theme" a train or tram after their Mascot or in other cases, have one mascot per carriage to represent the different stops on the train line.
There's also a tokusatsu show centered around transforming mascots of various companies, they look awesome and it's pretty good. It's called Dogengers and the production quality is pretty decent.
Which province did the demon bears represent (which I'm guessing is a play on kuma 熊 and akuma 悪魔)?

There's a whole thing in Japan where they really love mascots. So this one amazing drummer decided to help out the town apple farms by becoming their mascot. So now they're an apple cat. That takes the lunch money of entire Metal Albums over the course of a single drum solo.
Nyango is indeed an apple. "Nyango Star" is probably a pun on Ringo Starr, since "Ringo" in japanese means apple, and since it's an apple cat, he added the "Nyan" there, as it's the onomatopeia for cats meowing in Japan.
And Ringo is the Beatles' drummer, which makes sense
Fun fact: this pun is also used in The Great Ace Attorney as a way to give natural names for the Skulkin brothers.

Mascots are a huge deal in Japan and being able to be one isn't easy, it's very unlikely that there would be multiple people being this mascot.

That 'turtle' mascot is known as a Kappa (or River child), which is a yōkai. A supernatural entity and/or spirit in Japanese folklore.

I believe it is different drummers in the Costume. Its not just one person. When it was Maximum the Hormone, thats actually their drummer. There is a behind the scenes with her climbing into the suit... you can also hear her through the suit.
Without a doubt, this video is in my top-ten favorite TH-cam videos of all time. Without fail, if I’m having a horrible day and my mental health is getting the better of me, I go straight to this video and it always puts a smile on my face. The bassist that you see in the "turtle" costume at one point is actually a Kappa. In Japanese lore, kappa live by bodies of water and feed on people and cucumbers. They also have to keep the stone on the top of their head wet at all times. He's the most metal mascot up there.

When I first saw Nyango Star a couple years back it was the video that looked like a children's show and I had no idea what I was getting into. That he can do what he does wearing that costume is insane. He'd make a great warm-up act for someone like Tool, even better of they could work him into the show on some of the cover pieces they often do. I think Danny Carey would have a blast with him...

I was wondering this whole time how Nyango Star was able to play so well holding the drum sticks like that. Then I finally noticed that there is a hole in the hand part of the costume where the sticks can go through. That explains everything.
