I always wished we got a shot of the crowd here. I can just imagine a bunch of little kids crying and then that one having his first involuntary headbang and wondering what was happening to his body.
The most interesting fact about these mascots is, apparently, when they are in the costume these people ARE the mascot. Some western news company was interviewing a representative of the district Nyango Star was from. They asked him who was in the costume and he got visibly uncomfortable and waved off the question/played dumb. I think they said it's bad luck to acknowledge there's a human in the costume or something.
That is fairly true across multiple nations when it comes to mascots and playing characters in front of kids in particular. It's almost sacred to keep character. Since the time of Disneyland it became a deeply rooted tradition to never compromise on that if possible as other groups imitated Disney's business model. And that model definitely reached Japan.
FYI, the beginner drummer is Brett Chang, a violinist from TwoSetViolin. He has this series of videos attempting other instruments and miserably failing, super hilarious, howver, he's one helluva violinist :3

Nyango is indeed an apple. "Nyango Star" is probably a pun on Ringo Starr, since "Ringo" in japanese means apple, and since it's an apple cat, he added the "Nyan" there, as it's the onomatopeia for cats meowing in Japan.
I went down a rabbit hole with these mascots, turns out there are kind of a lot of them, and many of them represent their city or municipality in one way or another. It's weird but also super sweet.
I think that I've seen them (on video, not irl) on the Japanese transport systems. Sometimes they will "theme" a train or tram after their Mascot or in other cases, have one mascot per carriage to represent the different stops on the train line.
There's also a tokusatsu show centered around transforming mascots of various companies, they look awesome and it's pretty good. It's called Dogengers and the production quality is pretty decent.

6:22 hahaha, look at the little pink flower on Nyango's flank. That's a kindergarten name badge! I used to work in a kindergarten in Gifu prefecture, and the kids wore those exact same badges!
I was wondering this whole time how Nyango Star was able to play so well holding the drum sticks like that. Then I finally noticed that there is a hole in the hand part of the costume where the sticks can go through. That explains everything.
I just ran across this and I almost peed my pants as I was laughing & choking at the cranked out apple cat. 😂😂😂😂. WTFuuuuuqq?? I will never be the same. ❤
Also! his apple cat appearance with his name Nyango Star is a play off of how the japanese word for apple is romanized to "Ringo". Nyan is also the japanese onomatopoeia for the sound a cat makes so puns all around!
Oh now I get Nyango's full name. Nyango: portmanteau of nyan (cat's meow) and "ringo" (meaning "apple" in Japanese; the costume, as detailed at 11:29, means to look like an apple) Star: This is the interesting part and makes the full reference; Ringo Starr was the drummer for the Beatles, and Nyango Star is, well, also a drummer. Since copyright can be a bastard, having an apple with cat-like features would make him Nyango, have the three references all in one name (cat, apple, and Beatles drummer), and just ditch the second R in Starr's stage name.
Oh my GAWD this catapple is actually playing the intro from Skyrim Dohvakin!! Amazing hahahaha that's what he's playing when wearing that signature Soldier Mask, so awesome
Nao and her mascot are completely different people. Everyone in Japan thinks so, but I was surprised to see 2000 likes on the comment saying that Nao and the mascot are the same person. The title of the session video is Maximum the Hormone 2nd Shop Audition. Maximum the Hormone was trying to form a sibling group at the time and was auditioning. Nyango Star only auditioned. And Nyango Star's identity has not yet been revealed.

When I'm feeling down, I always come back to this video to cheer myself up.
DAMN THESE STUBBY ARMS!!
Also! his apple cat appearance with his name Nyango Star is a play off of how the japanese word for apple is romanized to "Ringo". Nyan is also the japanese onomatopoeia for the sound a cat makes so puns all around!
And the extended meta that Ringo Starr was the drummer for the Beatles.
Which fills in the source of his last name
Nyango Star' motto at the time was : START 'EM YOUNG" that's why he went off to introduce Metal to the kids. 👏👏 Good Job Nyango Star.
Playing all this while wearing that costume is just on another level
::::::::::::
10:37 ...it reminds me of...
" HAPPY TREE FRIENDS " !
(TV series started in 2000)
I'm not sure what the kids are thinking but there's going to come a point in their life where they all aspire to become drummers
0:34 he's turning up a lot of notches lol
0:55 When you're Death Metal, but you have to work weekends in a Mall to pay for the rehearsal room😹😹
This stubby arms are definitely what makes it funny (and yes, also the "facial expression") LUL
When the talk is about FUN, japaneses are on the top!!! God bless them all!!!
Oh now I get Nyango's full name.
Nyango: portmanteau of nyan (cat's meow) and "ringo" (meaning "apple" in Japanese; the costume, as detailed at 11:29, means to look like an apple)
Star: This is the interesting part and makes the full reference; Ringo Starr was the drummer for the Beatles, and Nyango Star is, well, also a drummer.
Since copyright can be a bastard, having an apple with cat-like features would make him Nyango, have the three references all in one name (cat, apple, and Beatles drummer), and just ditch the second R in Starr's stage name.
7:30 nice synchronised headbanging
The mere *fact* that this dude brought a double pedal to a kids show clearly shows what he actually meant to do.
Love your reactions and comments while watching Nyango Star drumming. Yours the best out there😉
Holy frig. Watched your vids for a bit and just now realized that you're also in Winnipeg. Hell yeah! Go Canada!
"Looks like a crowd of adults...to me.
Unless.......nevermind!" LMFAO!!!
I'm sorry for quoting, but that was hysterical. I'm still laughing from it xD
What was he going to say though? Unless what? where was he going with it?
The Japanese are wild! Love them!
This is an unexpected video, but a welcomed one.
6:00 that's Maximum the hormone they're playing for anyone wondering (song is called Shimi). They're a fucking awesome Japanese metal band that I highly recommend.
I fucking love this apple cat thing. Damnit! I knew I should've gotten some apples while I was at the store!
Did you remember to feed the cat?
At 9:40the guy is bred from 2set violin hahaha they are awesome
My two year old daughter watching this "I like this guy!"
Nyango Star never gets old. Its been years and it still cracks me up.
Finally we found the perfect thrash metal drummer.
Ringo is Japanese for apple, nyan is the sound a Japanese cat makes, et viola Nyango Star
1:46
pretty sure this guy could slay Dragonforce :o
Ahhhahaha ... Was great to have all of those clips together and your reactions ... can't stop laughing ... Thanks ... Cheers ...
Holly sh*t man that was dope hahaha.. and the fact that is dressed like that but playing that hard and fast causes a weird sensation but I loved it!
