I guess it also shields the main and mizzenmast at the point when the wind is directly ahead. Also didn’t realize they wore away from the wind to gain speed before doing it. On those big windjammers it must have been quite an event for a young sailor to see that all go down for the first time at sea.
Hi Chris, thank you for the comment. They do sell RC sailboats, but they are yachts or, at the most, schooners. If you want a square-rigger, I’m afraid you’ll have to build your own. If you look further in my channel, you’ll find a couple of “build videos”.
I was astounded by the "dismasting" segment - (although I had thought that was "boxhauling") - something I'd sort of understood in concept but not quite followed. It looked beautiful on the video

How does the sheeting system work? I take it that the sheets are from the lower yards...with all the sails and yards above (on the mast) following? I mean that you don't have the full brace system like that on a real square rigged ship? interested because I have been building a Cutty Sark model from an old fence post. Would quite like to get her sailing. What servos do you use? I might have to fit a micro servo as the model I quite small.

Wow not only informative, I didn't know they sold RC sailboats let alone square riggers.

What a beautiful model. Did you get away with not adding a keel? (I mean some models like this use a blade keel)
Some use even a bulb-keel (yak)!
