Sorry folks, the only motors in the model operate the winches that trim the yards (sails), there is no drive motor or propeller making it move, it's 100% wind.

I am watching with interest to your work. You are one of the few who does not use a false keel. Very interesting your experience wiring running rigging.

Actually, I do. There's a 3" PVC pipe full of lead pellets that weights 42 pounds bolted to the bottom. It's the gray thing the model sits on on the cart at the beginning of the video.
What's nice is besides getting most of the weight as low as I can, I can easily separate 42 pounds (almost half it's weight) from the model which makes it much easier to handle in and out of the car, on the workbench, etc.
There's another 15 pounds of lead pellets in removable bags placed inside the model - I didn't do a good job trimming her this sail, I left her bow up a bit. :)

Here's a video as to why I use external ballast:

Thank you for the detailed information.

For those interested; the video linked below shows, in more detail, how the courses (lower square sails) are handled, and how the external ballast attaches, as well as how sail will be shortened or increased (non-mechanically) according to sailing conditions.

Again, more detailed explanation and still images are available in the work-log on my site: todd.mainecav.org/model/constellation/

A beautiful model, and a peaceful video, with lovely music. Well done!
Will you sail later with the courses set? There is a way of managing the courses, with no yard beneath them. Are you aware of sewing stiff wire into their bottom edge?

I intend to do just that Nev. I've looked really hard into controlling the tacks, but it just doesn't seem to be worth the aggravation, so I'm going with the old wire in the foot trick. I blather on about the details in the work-log on my site:

Nice, I must build some. Mostly internal ballist?

    • @Uhlan_
      @Uhlan_  6 ปีที่แล้ว

There's a PVC pipe that bolts to the keel and weighs about 45 pounds. Internal there's about 15 pounds of ballast plus battery, gear, etc. When I need to work on her, and lift her in and out of the car, or up on the bench, I can quickly and easily detach 45 pounds which makes things easier, and I'm less likely to break the boat.
Making all the ballast internal wouldn't work in anything stronger than a wisp of a wind, limiting what sail she could carry.

Uhlan Thank you very much. I have some large 1/32 scale fiberglass 2, 5 and 7 masted Schooner hulls I want to put RC equipment in. I have to learn everything I can on this subject.
I built molds so I can duplicate each hull in a couple of days. The 7 masted Schooner Thomas W Lawson the hull is 12.3 feet LOD about 16 feet LOA! Thank you Sir.

Come to the Scale Sail forum at RCGroups.com, we're a nice little community of scale sailors sharing and learning - it's by far the best forum on the subject I've ever found.

      USS CONSTELLATION (1797)
USS Constellation was a 38-gun frigate, one of the "Six Original Frigates" authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794. She was distinguished as the first U.S. Navy vessel to put to sea and the first U.S. Navy vessel to engage and defeat an enemy vessel. Constructed in 1797, she was modified several times in succeeding decades, and finally rebuilt beginning in 1853 as the sloop-of-war USS Constellation (1854).
      Go figure!
