Tim Follin is a genius. His music are technical wonders, listen to his early work and you can't even imagine that system ever making that sound.

You nailed it: it's one of the best hidden gems on SNES, the only real problem being how incredibly long it is with no way to save your progress. As a kid I managed to get to the second to last level and by then i was exausted and couldn't do it. Play it with an emulator and savestates and it will be a fantastic experience.

You can use the hidden bonus levels to warp ahead, ala warp-pipes in Mario... but the bonus levels can be pretty difficult! It's not a foregone conclusion that you will pass them and be able to skip anything. Plok is damn challenging any way you look at it.

Plok's biggest sin is the lack of a password feature. Once you play the game with savestates, it becomes so, so much better.

Plok is such a gem of a game. The artstyle, the gameplay, the soundtrack and the general feeling of it is just so unique and unforgettable. I liked all those weird and courageous ideas. Especially the idea with playing Plok's grandfather somehow made me feel kind of nostalgic for a past I never experienced, if that makes any sense. Unfortunately I never made it through the whole game, because of those last few vehicle levels, which just weren't my cup of tea. Nevertheless I love watching speedruns of Plok. Adding to this, I just realized that the speedruns in this game are still very competitive, with a new wr just being achieved 5 days ago.

Fleas take exactly three hits to kill, their color reliably changes each time they take damage.
The thing is that they have a big after-hit invincibility time. Interestingly, this timer lasts even longer on the EASY difficulty for some reason, which always made me think the fleas were actually tougher on easy until I figured out that only hits count when they AREN'T flashing.
Hits with super weapons seem to bypass the invincibility, too, making them the most effective way to fight fleas.

It has the best and most creative soundtrack on the SNES. I think it undersells it a little to compare most of the tracks to Yoshi Island and Turrican, not that they do not have outstanding soundtracks too. This Prog rock comes from insparations of the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and so many other synth/rock/jazz 70-80's jams sessions.

the first bosses are the ones who take his flag because he's the self-proclaimed king of the island and it's merely a distraction for the rest of the fleas to invade. he's not trying to save a princess or the world, he's just pissed off
to have a character who's just trying to work for himself and to have cutscenes and between-level dialogue move him along is honestly really cool in a sea of homogeneous 16-bit mascot platformers

Finally this game gets it's own video after it's been mentioned many times on other Snes Drunk videos. I've been waiting for Plok to get it's own video since I feel it's a really good game and more people need to know about it.
Forgot to mention you only earn letters in the Plok counter if you finish the level without losing a life. Or if you find hidden coins.
It doesn't take that long to get to where the good stuff in the game is (the second island). The first island's levels are really short and can be even shorter if you clear through one of the bonus level warps.
Not only is the music amazing, the songs last longer than most Snes songs.

This is a great game, I'm happy that the retro community has made this game no longer a hidden gem, it's fairly well known now, and you're right that the music is incredible. The music from this game has some of my favorite tracks to relax to.

Don't know what it was about this game but I really enjoy it as a kid. Me and my sister played it like none stop. I would even wake up early before school to sneak a play.

I absolutely love this game, easily in my personal top 5 favourite SNES games. Sure it's balls-to-the-wall difficult, but it just oozes charm and quirkiness so I couldn't help but fall in love with it as a kid. Art style and music is absolutely top notch, loads of variety in game play and level design and I personally thought the challenge made finally beating the game really rewarding (though I definitely would have appreciated a password system!). Fantastic game.

This is the only SNES game I own. I brought it to a party a few years ago, and some of my friends were floored by the soundtrack. Also, Plok is a hangman.

One of the absolute best SNES-games, with an AMAZING soundtrack. But yes, the game is a slow burner, difficult as hell and the black/white-levels are too long and too many. Still, top 10 in my book.

All fans of this one should check out the ongoing Plok comic by the game's original creators, the Pickford brothers. It's a lot of fun.

Yup, I have this game and it's very underrated. Music is great, difficulty can be finicky, but I'm glad you mentioned the continue system b/c I'm so tired of having to start over during a game over.

I read somewhere (so I can't be sure this is true but) that when they made this game, they were really hoping Plok would be the next big deal like Mario or Sonic .. so that's why the game is so incredible, they went all out hoping to create a new major franchise and mascot character so if true this explains the quality of the game in pretty much every area. I loved this as a kid and I still speak very highly of it.

Nintendo apparently almost published this one, though they did publish TinStar. Probably just a easter egg, but possible a remnant to this original publishing deal, Mario's overalls can be found as a end of stage flag near the start of the game.
Plok also showed up in the independently made Atari Lynx game Zaku.

My cousin had this game growing up and I LOVED it. I recently purchased it for $15aud, a bargain imo. Never finished it then and still haven’t to this day although I haven’t played it on an emulator with save states. Even though it’s aged extremely well, a remake with the ability to save would be amazing.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I really like them but one critique, the videos are still in 720p the snes gameplay would be significant less blurry if the vids were rendered in 1080p, this is just a tip to help a creator out

This is really one of those gamest that are better played on a modern retro-clone with save-states or an emulator than on original hardware. Don't get me wrong, this game was fun to play back in the days, but it's actually better now with modern hardware!
