TOPS Fieldcraft B.O.B. (Brothers of Bushcraft) knife torture test soon?? Edit: the original version is 1095 carbon steel. The newer version is 154CM stainless steel.
I will say that your videos revealed that TOPS does not heat treat the entire knife. Only the cutting edge and they call it differential heat treatment. That saves them allot of money on energy and labor costs.
It actually costs more money to do a differential heat treat because they have to harden the whole blade just like a one hardness knife and then go back a second time and heat up the spine, drawing the hardness out, working their way towards the edge. There’s a few other ways to do it but they are even more expensive to do. If they are sending these knives off to a Heat Treater, I 100% guarantee they charge more for a differential heat treat. And since the 1095 held up that well, I would be surprised they are Triple quenching as well. Though I can’t afford this knife, I think it’s an incredible value. I would say a large portion of what you are paying for is the heat treat. They very well may be using Paul Boss for this. I know he retired some years back but I believe he sold his business to someone else who is continuing his work.

Definitely not a new concept to purchase a tool and misuse it but to air it, is. What you are doing is misusing a tool which people find entertaining. That's fine but logically what you are presenting yields very little useful information. Knives are made for cutting. Large knives for chopping items softer than they are. Not sure if you are aware but in general the harder the knife the more brittle it is. A carbon knife say made from 1095 that is hardened greater than 60 will chip and break if smashed because it loses its toughness. The heat treatment for hardening a carbon steel creates internal stresses. 1095 steel tends to perform best at HRC of 58. Most useful knives for cutting are hardened beyond HRC 56. Some exotic alloyed knives more than 67 HRC but that type of hardness makes them too brittle to strike against a hard surface because they can chip or shatter. If not, they can't keep a sharp edge. If you want to smash a piece of hardened steel but not break you have to go down to a sledge hammer or or a blunt piece of hardened steel like a crowbar. These 45-50 HRC hardened steels will likely smash your rock, wreck your cars, dent your steel pole but will not be able to fillet a fish, properly gut a deer, carve wood or stab a Perp like a hardened steel knife will. With that being said, your videos are entertaining.
