I read a lot of criticism about the size of the handle on this knife. To each his own. But for me it is perfection. I attached a cobra weave paracord lanyard between the front and rear lanyard holes. This locks my hand in no matter which grip I'm using...with or without gloves. Total security for chopping, stabbing and overall knife retention. I carry this in a custom kydex sheath with a trek lok in the 45 degree cross draw position. This knife checks all the boxes for what I want in a camping/ hiking blade. Thanks for reviewing this terrific TOPS knife.
I didn't expect so many 90 degree spine comments. I only addressed that because there is a large population of people (mostly Dave's followers) that consider a 90 degree spine a must-have feature. I prefer one, but it's by no means a requirement on a good knife. If I DON'T cover it, there will be comments asking about it. Thats just how it is. It's either important to you or not. And it's only REALLY important if you are following a strict minimalistic-tool system, like only taking a 10-pc kit or something like that. Don't get too caught up on the 90 degree spine. You should have a multitool also (IMO), and that will cover the secondary striker issue.
Like you mentioned I had a hard time getting this blade from TOPS. I found one on eBay cheaper and had it in two days. So seek and ye shall find.
+PREPAREDMIND101 The sharp spine will be viewed like jimping is beginning to be viewed now....something guys used to want, but grow to realize it's actually a negative. I vastly prefer a slightly rounded spine...just way more comfortable, more finished look, & I will never ever use one of my beloved knives to strike a rod. Love your vids, I don't know why, but wanted to re-watch this one, it holds up nicely my friend!

90 degree spine is an easy fix
Very nice. Would be cool to see a size comparison to some other popular knives in the future vids of this knife.
The can opener on a Leatherman produces great sparks.
I like it and would like to have one. I've been looking at it on the Tops Knives website for months. The lack of a sharp 90° spine really isn't a big deal to me. All it takes is five minutes with a file and some abrasive paper, and you can get the spine as sharp as you want it! That is a very common modification that I've done to more than a few of my knives.
As for a spear, I generally carry either a Pathfinder Spear Point or a Cold Steel Bushman for that purpose, and the Pathfinder Spear Point rides in a pouch on the back of my knife sheath so that it's always there. Jeff White also makes a good spear point at a very good price.
I'm new to your channel, but between you and GT, if you guys don't review it, it ain't worth a second look. Thanks for the vids, live the channel.
Oh, and by the way, an awesome kydex guy is Red Rhino Customs, I recently got a kydex sheath from and it's outstanding quality! I got it off Ebay for $64 and it's a pancake sheath with a condor nylon pouch on the front with a firesteel loop on the side with a good firesteel and a little multi tool in the pouch, got it for my Bk2, that's the best price on kydex I've seen. I got a Godspeed Tactical kydex sheath on your recommendation and was not disappointed, and this guys quality is about the same for a much better price. I'll do a video on it soon.-Ted

had a chance to order the hero with the new scales, but went with the rocky mountain originals and no complaints with my xl hands with skinny fingers. tops are TOPS! love the review as usual....
I will comment from Japan. Silent hero is nice! In Japan, the regulation of knife is strict, so I envy the United States!
Great video Chris! Looks like a good knife to have. Anyhow, there really is no true one tool option! It's always better to have a backup in case your loose your primary. This offering from Tops is probably better than your average field knife.
I always use the choil on the knife to strike a fr the part where the flat grind begins is the best part to use and it works like a serretion for scraping too cause it collects the material more

Chris, try using the finger choil to spark your ferro rod. I always use the choil on my knives to do this and it seems to work well with most of the knives I have. Can't wait to buy one of those, all I have to do is get over the fact that the price doubles when they cross the Atlantic.
Its a shame you didn't leverage that lanyard hole when chopping. It changes the feel and power.
The real question is do you like the Silent Hero better than the Tex Creek XL? I feel they are slightly similar in uses even though blade geometry is obviously different. For a similar price, Tex Creek XL or Silent Hero? Great video as usual, Chris!

I agree with you. I love my TOPS knives and wouldn't let the lack of a sharp spine sway my opinion of them. It's due to the differential heat treat they apply to the knives. The spine is just too soft.

Honestly I like only a small 1 inch part of the blade spine to be sharp because when I choke up on it, 90 degree spines dig into my thumb bad.

Love the looks and the apparent feel and performance of this knife. Few testers mention that to get a good 90 degree spine it is so easy setting it in a vice or knocking it into a stump and simply using a simple file to get the spine nice and sharp. Big fan of Tops knives and how they work. I almost bought the SXB, but, I finally ended up choosing the Schrade #9, yeah, the SCHF9, mainly due to your testing and videos on it. Seems like the best big, emergency, fun knife, and beautifully crafted blade for the money. I watched almost every video on it by you and all the others here as well as other good blades and became convinced it was the right choice for me. It's suppose to be here by a week from tomorrow, Wenesday. Hope so. I've got the new, big knife, jitters. Thanks again for all your help in making a solid choice for myself; John Sachu
Agree re the filing the spine to make it sharp. Easily rectified.
The only thing I'm worried about is the Rocky Mountain tread design, sometimes you get hot spots for extended use. Wondering if you experienced any of that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience on this awesome blade, I appreciate it sir.
The profile reminds me a lot of the Becker/ Doug Ritter RSK. At the same price point I think Id take the Becker handles but that sure looks like a nice knife.

You should show how useful a set of nail clippers or fishing clippers and also I think a standard pencil sharpener makes the best wood feathers for tinder no one ever talks on these simple things and they are so cheap and fit in anything ?
You are very right I never thought of a pence shaper but my girlfriend got me a couple of little survival tins from s guy on ebay and the fire starting tin came with a magnesium pencil sharper and it works fantastic.

The reason Tops didn’t do a 90degree spine is because it wouldn’t work without proper heat treating. You can see the beautiful heat treat line on the blade.
You never tried the finger slot to strike the rod,I just wonder?

i watched your video and gideons video on the silent hero. impressive knife. in both videos i was looking at the finger choil. have you tried to use the choil on the ferro rod? it looks like it would have the right edge to throw a spark.
Try using the choyle on this knife it might give you a harder angle to use( in a life or death situation).
Just an idea.

Hey Chris. Great review and full of good info, as per your usual style. Based upon your review (as well as Gideon's tact), I will have this knife on my short list for a good all round bushcraft knife. With regard to the handle thickness, would it be possible to add a couple extra liners under the micarta for larger hands? It seems to me that various hand sizes would push the mfgs. to add some add'l liners to custom fit the grip, as do some handgun makers with the extra backstraps. Keep up the good work and thanks for the great info.
Andrew Bieger Thanks. Good luck finding one though. Might have better luck on the secondary market. TOPS is going to do a larger run of them next time, but they are having issues keeping up with the demand for the BRW knives.
Hi. Tops recommends chopping with this blade profile, but advises against batoning regardless of what you may see in a review. That's like a little PSA I guess. I would try the index finger relief with your rod. The right tilt should get ya spark.
Don't know why outside of people trying to baton stuff you should be using an axe on. You can baton smaller stuff to make fine kindling easily. But if you are trying to baton a 4.5" thick piece of hardwood and banging on that sharp tip...thats overusing your tool. Most knife companies say "Don't baton" in the fine print. I say "Don't baton stuff you'd normally need an axe for"
PREPAREDMIND101 Hi. People do it because in an emergency, you're more likely to have your knife than an axe. So a lot of times batoning will be tested for feasibility prior to an actual emergency which would be the last place you'd want to find out that you can't. You can actually process a tree trunk with this knife if done correctly. The issue is, few demonstrations teach people the proper method. That said, and I appreciate the reply, my post was merely meant to be informative.
I think a penny would work for a scraper too. At least for one fire before the copper edge wears. Just a guess,not sure copper will spark. Maybe a nickel?
Could always use a dremel tool or iron file to make it a 90 degree angle... I'm shaving the coating off my Schrade to use it as a ferro rod striker.. :)

Just a quick comment on this little vid, i noticed the bow you have on your deck rail in the back ground, oddly enough i have the same one. i gotta say it's a rather good take-a-part. i was messing around with mine the other day and destroyed one of my arrows, was very sad about it. Anywho big fan, keep up the wonderful work.

Never been a big fan of TOPS due to the heat treat techniques. While I understand they wanted hard edges and soft spines so the knife wouldn't snap but bend during a failure for safety reasons, a lot of folks just expect more from our blades and have come to appreciate the more sophisticated heat treating techniques that Peter's Heat Treat use and so on. I'm also guilty of liking a 90 degree spine for many reasons. I do like the look of the TOPS Silent Hero but the heat treat is a no go for me.

Btw, did you ever review the Rtak2 ?? The new 5150 version is a beast. You will hate the sheath i know you ;) kydex sheaths are extra, or pick up a junglas sheath for it, etc...

Belt sander or dremel or even sand paper can make a 90 degree spine easily . thin handles are uncomfortable to me unless its a really small knife even my hunting scalpels i make the handles a little larger than stock sizes .
i had a momentary giggle when you called google+ a relevant social media, but yeah the silent hero is definitely on my list along with the bob. it may not necessarily be a fair comparison, but could you compare the two?
They are very different. This is a potent weapon-knife. Especially after the sharpening last night....holee crap!. The grind on this plus the TOPS differential heat treat makes this thing a terror.

I had a question in regards to the ninety degree spines and how you say TOPS just doesn't do it. Are there any specific reasons not to have a ninety degree spine that keeps them from doing so? I've not really seen anyone say something along the lines of "It has a ninety degree spine and that's a deal breaker for me." so was curious.
What I've heard second or third hand is can chip the spine.
It's a shame that handle is so small. I have always liked leather sheaths but that Yellow Hawk guy is something else. Mike

Just put the spine on a belt grinder and S good flat file and make a 90% spine and you good... I've done it on several knives I own
