A Japanese lady told me that she made these for her kids with little cuts of hot dog or small sausages in them, which I have since done. She also suggested another path where they would be sweet, that you can buy red-bean paste in a plastic bag... so just cut a small corner off the bag, and squeeze some out into each mold, so it's a little like a jelly doughnut! I had my own American idea of using cornbread mix (sold everywhere locally) and the hot dogs to make tiny corn dogs! I haven't tried to do this yet, but have great hopes, it really seems like it would work. Also could just use the corn meal and onions to have "hush puppies" without using a deep fryer.

I was just thinking here in the US I could buy a small box of jiffy corn muffins and put in this with a cut of hot dog it would be mini corn dog bites! Oh my!
I have an abelskiver pan(it has smaller holes) which is s Danish treat. Little soft sweet pancake bites. A small town near me has a Danish Festival every year (in Michigan) I grew up eating them.
I've thought about making takoyaki several times. I have everything but 🐙 octopus but I can get squid or 🍤 shrimp. My half Japanese brother in law told me to just pop a chunk of crab 🦀 meat in instead. But i had to buy bulldog sauce for on top-he and his mom have taught us so many fun things to make and I had the honor of teaching her to make spaghetti sauce from scratch and to can/jar it. And I passed my lasagna recipe to her. She moved to Texas and we all miss her.

@@Emeraldwitch30 I got the idea for this originally from a little cookbook from Solvang, all about Aebleskiver, and "Danish Days". Nobody here had ever heard of it! And of course it was before TH-cam. At first I felt funny about (say) cornbread and all, but here we see Japanese persons making PIZZA, so I guess all bets are off! SO, I say, forget about octopus and go for that beloved JIFFY mix! I don't think you'll regret it. Pro tip (I'm not the pro! I saw it on TH-cam) is to put the batter in a squeeze-bottle or other special dispensing gadget. If you look at the videos of Takoyaki street vendors one thing you see is that they are sloshing stuff all over the place, and I don't think you want to do that at home. Maybe this will become completely American, a little bit at a time. THEN ONE DAY you'll have a Japanese visitor, and the circle will be complete! Ah, I made some in an actual Aebleskiver pan, the balls were much bigger than Takoyaki and I thought it was easier to do. Used standard pancake mix with some sugar and seasonings like Cardamom... and put different kinds of jelly or chunks of guava paste inside. So... somehow I started in Japan, and ended up in Cuba? Or Florida, anyway. I AM WITHOUT QUESTION going to do that corndog thing, how can it not be great?

@@leonardpearlman4017 I actually have a pancake squeeze tube thingy. And a funnel cake pourer lol. My family find me the wildest kitchen gadgets lol
Ive been craving onion rings for weeks but most of the places near me buy those frozen ones they just deep fry. Not as good so last night I did a deep fry dinner lol. Onion rings and mushrooms and eggplants. Hubby had a few slices of turkey breast for protein.
But it sure hit the spot. But thats a lot of oil and my house smells like a dive bar lol

I need to order a takoyaki maker! I had a few other ideas : pancake mix with fresh fruit (strawberry apple blueberry) in middle, pancake mix with maple syrup mixed in, minced veggies (onion pepper green onion tomato mushroom ) in first to cook a bit then scrambled egg mixture, mashed potatoes or rice with cheese chunk in middle, rice with tuna or seafood salad in middle, cake donut batter would make donut holes perfect could even put whole nut or Nutella in middle.......OK can you tell I am hungry and totally inspired! Thank you for such a fun video! It would be interesting to see what you typically eat at home in a day, you both can obviously cook! Also how do you both stay in such good shape eating all this food?

During Covid I bought a small cast iron one at thrift store and tried making mini pizza balls with pepperoni, peppers, green onions etc.. It was fun but I need to find a good batter. Maybe I'll try a cornbread mix. After turning half way, add batter, then turn so top part will round out more. Some good you tube videos out there from Japan. Thanks for ideas.

It is fun seeing how to make a takoyaki grill multi-task. A round food I knew many years before I found takoyaki is aebleskiver. Yes, it is Scandinavian. The grill looks just like the takoyaki grill but slightly bigger cups and I had one that was round heavy cast iron. The dish is fluffy pancakes. The batter is very like Belgian pancakes. I used to get them at fairs filled with jam or cream.

There are quite a few foods traditionally cooked in something resembling a takoyaki pan. There's poffertjes, tiny bite sized Dutch pancakes with powdered sugar. There's kanom krok, a Thai sweet/savory coconut pancake often topped with green onions. You could also cook individual quail eggs, Thai style, for a snack or super cute garnish.

At around 4:00, I'm thinking it wants more batter! The batter is watery, just flour and it doesn't rise. You can see in commercial operations they just flood the whole cooker with it because it shrinks so much. Also they might put a lot of STUFF which doesn't shrink. The Aebleskiver from Denmark are like this, but made of more like pancake batter which rises,so the mold tends to fill up and it's easier to get that SPHERE. So when the pancake is completely cooked it shrinks a little and can roll around in the pan. When I'm trying to make Takoyaki I put more batter after one or two quarter-turns of the balls, and fill the mold again.

This is so eccentric! And a valuable social service, too. I have a lot of cooking gadgets, and love this process, but frankly don't care if I ever eat any octopus! I've watched a hundred videos about Takoyaki (there's a separate channel !), they were not all from Japan... but most people doing the same thing with the same ingredients, and making a big mess. You alone are really getting out there, and working with the technique, and giving the octopi a break! I've watched this one at least five times, and slowly tried a few things. It is possible to make a ball just from scrambled eggs for example, and I think the Omurice ball is easily in reach. I suggest adding the egg several times, after each quarter-turn ideally. Ah, when I saw the "pizza" ones I really thought that the loose dough was going to be folded over somehow so the finished thing would be more or less a ball. I was really surprised that the dough cooked! The big division here seems to be that Japanese batter is mostly water and shrinks in cooking, so you need a lot of filler, and maybe to add batter while cooking (I do this, it's in a squeeze bottle). The Danish style uses a thicker batter that rises, so you can put filler if you want but it will work without. I think you should, because it's fun and also there isn't the problem of the very inside being undercooked, the filling just has to be hot. There's a LOT of room for development here! I've seen some interesting videos from the Philippines for example. Who will be the first to work some SPAM in there?

Thank you! The maker was just sitting in the shelf after only about 3-4 uses. Hope you make a part 2!

Hi, thanks for the video. I have other ideas to offer. I was thinking about using puff pastry + cheese and sausage/ham. Also, dough for donuts. In donuts, you can put jam, red-beens pasta or Nutella, or fruits.

Gosh, these were wonderful! The pancakes you made are pretty much the aebleskivers I used to make for my granddaughter - usually with pieces of apple in them and powdered sugar on top when they're done. There's an aebleskiver pan, but it's almost identical to a takoyaki pan except for size. One hint: you turn the balls in thirds rather than halves (with thin skewers - or I've even used a knitting needle), and I think it gives the optimal round shape. (It doesn't make a ton of difference, it's just what was in the instructions I used.) I have to find my pan to try your experiments!

    Liked ur innovations…
In India, there are traditional savory dishes from South India made in the same pan…It just has a different name called Paniyaram / Appe pan. You should try that variation too if you get the ingredients.
Also, Like you made the sweet ones , Norway has the same pancake batter desserts too and they call it Aebleskiver pan…

Great idea! If i made the pizza I think I would brush the gyoza skin with olive oil. How fun! I'll have to try this.

I love takoyaki. But many of my American friends hate me for liking takoyaki, because they think it's barbaric to eat octopus. I don't know how to talk with them...

No one I work with understands my interest in Asian culture and food. When ever I try talking to them about Tabieats or something different (and usually delicious) that I got from my local Asian supermarket. They don't get it. I say do what makes you happy and let them do them.

That´s really great ideas and I will try the Omurice and Yaki-Onigiri for sure. I sometimes use my Takoyaki maker to make some kind of Dorayaki balls, similar to your Castella cake balls.
