  • China’s maritime militia surrounded a Philippine convoy on a resupply mission in the disputed South China Sea. It would become one of the most significant confrontations between the two countries in recent years.
WSJ’s Feliz Solomon explains why these resupply missions are becoming increasingly dangerous as she witnessed the hourslong standoff on board a Philippine coast guard ship called the BRP Cabra.

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to which China is a signatory, mandates states to respect Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) as a legal basis. An EEZ is an area extending 200 nautical miles from a country's coastline, within which the country has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources.
However, China seeks to extend its territory well beyond its EEZ, disregarding the territorial claims of Southeast Asian countries. Despite an arbitration court ruling that declared China's actions lacked a legal basis. Unlike most nations that settle territorial dispute this way, in a respectful and peaceful manner, China refuses to honor the court decision. They even threaten war.
This behavior demonstrates China's greediness in pursuing expansive territorial claims, undermining international agreements, and the sovereignty of neighboring nations. China disregards its own agreement and international laws which it willingly entered into. At this point, how can you trust China? Beware, just another Putin!

200 nautical miles is from land. There are islands in that sea, and some of the islands are man made, and if you draw a circle of 200 nautical miles, it covers a big disc of sea area, and soon the whole areas is covered. Anyone can pass through the EEZ but not engaging economic activities such as drilling and fishing. Blinken said it, "if you are not at the table, then you are on the menu".

First of, the 2016 Arbitral Ruling is not illegal. It is very legal not just in the Philippines but also accepted globally and has become part of UNCLOS. Only China continues to insist that it is illegal, despite being an UNCLOS signatory.
Secondly, China's sovereignty claim over areas within its so-called 9 or 10-dash line has already been declared illegal and this ruling was accepted globally.
Thirdly, China cannot claim sovereignty over the area by using historical claims because even its history and historical maps did not consistently and clearly define the Spratly Islands, Scarborough Shoal, and even the the Paracel Islands as its own territory.
Lastly, China cannot claim the South China Sea as its own lake and part of its territorial waters because it is not a lake and its not within their land boundaries. Even if China includes Taiwan as its territory, it is not enough to support a claim of sovereignty over the SCS, more so the WPS.

It’s as if we don’t have hearts, we don’t have rights and we don’t exist. If the Chinese government represents its people, I don’t know how heartless it is to live in their soil. I feel for those Chinese men and women who are felt so misrepresented by these actions. This is wrong, religiously, ethically, culturally, professionally wrong wherever you choose to see this.

When Japan colonized Taiwan, the islands and reefs in the South China Sea were under the jurisdiction of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. After Japan was defeated and returned to Taiwan, the islands and reefs in the South China Sea were naturally returned together. This is the right that China, as the victor in World War II, should have, unless you have the ability to overturn the world consensus formed after World War II.
Moreover, at the end of World War II, the Philippines was still colonized by the United States. The United States recognized China's rights and interests in the South China Sea and sent warships to help build national boundary markers on the islands and reefs in the South China Sea. When the Philippines was founded, its territorial scope continued the scope of the United States colonial period, east of 118 degrees east longitude. The same is true for old maps of the Philippines before the 1970s.
The Philippines now claims sovereignty over the islands and reefs west of 118 degrees east longitude, and actually occupies these islands and reefs that should belong to China. Who do you think is bullying whom?

Weapons have many forms, military alliance is another form of weapon. Philippines can gain power by building alliances with nearby and slightly far countries like Australia and New Zealand and Japan and Taiwan.
Attack can be physical and it can be in a form of reputation. By recongizing or threaten to build relationship and recognise Taiwan, can make china to rethink it's action.
Direct confrontation is like attacking the frontal gate of a walled city, it is the most fortified region of the city.
By recognising Taiwan, it attacks the sovereignity of China, by attacking the region that China cannot defend.
It cannot do anything if Philippine build counselate on Taiwan, hence China is defenseless over it.
Never strike the strongest region of a defence, always aim at the weakest spot.

SCS or WPS, both are correct.
West Philippine Sea only refers to the portion of SCS that is claimed by PH within its exclusive economic zone. The island where they are supposed to deliver supplies is within Philippines EEZ. But you should take in mind that SCS is used long before "WPS", which refers to the entire contested sea. But it doesn't mean that if we call is SCS is China owns it. A similar logic is applied that even we call it "Indian Ocean", it doesn't mean India owns the entire ocean.
Asserting other people to call it WPS without explaining it will give a wrong impression to people doesn't know what you're talking about.

The Philippines has been actively purchasing new navy and coast guard ships since 2010 from countries like Japan, Indonesia, and Israel. Recently, India has delivered Bramos missles to be equiped in the new Philippine navy ships. It takes time for new ships to be built, nonetheless, the Philippine government is working in enabling local shipbuilders to fill additional ships in the near future.
