First review (from like 10 that I’ve watched already) where people talk about downsides of this camera instead of plain sugarcoating. Thank you for that.
You serious Clark? Needs more footage less talking. Keep looking there are tons of review that focus on what you can see not what they tell you. Also get the new DJI Cam it is good I really like it.
Before the launch, I was going to buy it but for the image I like GoPro better and I take most my video in 4K so that crop is not for me. I will stick with my GoPro Hero7 Black and wait for Hero 8 Black.
Correction: Hero7 still has 2.7k linear mode. It was never linear in 4k. Aside from that this is, so far, the only review that focused on the IQ as the most important feature when every other review mainly focuses on stabilization. Thank you for that.
The battery life is huge. I have been on GoPro forums reading and trying to fix my Hero 7 draining the battery while OFF STATE. I have gps, wifi, bt, sound commands off and still sometimes when I boot up the camera the battery is dead or you need to take the battery out and back to make it boot up. Super annoying when you want to capture the moment.
One of the firs things you said was that it should be able to keep consistent lighting in different lighting shades, I don't think you ever mentioned that in this clip, just about the handle bars. @7:37 the GoPro looks so much better as even in the shadows it doesn't lose any of the action, where the DJI does. Flying under trees this is important to me, I love the front screen but honestly no one watching my videos ever see the screen. I would like to see a drop test compare. I am not biased, I fly DJI in my video drones, but use GoPro on my racer drones for ruggedness, at this time based on this video I would not change my GoPro.
Nice review, but I’m confused about what you said about GoPro not having linear mode. Linear mode is still part of the record modes in the Hero 7 Black, GoPro removed only the narrow mode, but also included a digital zoom mode that DJI doesn’t offer which you didn’t mention in your review.
To my eye, I really prefer watching the OSMO Action video over the Gopro. It just looks better to me, regardless of the micro imperfections. Thx for the comparison. In the end it’s all relative to the viewer.
I got both - to return one. The file size of the clips of the Osmo is 50% larger compared to the Hero 7. That's another drawback. Files size is very different at 60 fps, less at 30 fps. But since I may use it when freediving/snorkeling I know I often need to slow down the footage. I got the Hero 7 and the Osmo Action. I am returning the DJI. The Osmo has such a better screen, interface, startup times compared to GoPro, but apart from the large file size, many reviewers at BHphoto complain of water leakage. Even if I'd dive only with a case, as battery door seals often fail, and saltwater is fatal to electronics most of the time, having better water resistance is important. I really like the Osmo Action better from a user-friendliness and ergonomics point of view. The screw-on lens protector is great. But there is no way to decrease sharpening, contrast. And I'd get 40 min of 2.7K at 60 fps vs 60 min of the GoPro Hero 7 on a 32 GB memory card. I also like the less wide lens, which is better for general use. But I wish DJI would have allowed tweaking contrast, sharpness and have better file compression. And fewer reports of water leakage. The Hero 7 doors are harder to open/close, maybe that indicates a better seal
H.265 mode is a MUST HAVE (to come over a firmware update). Otherwise its massively limited according the image quality - Especially for an action camera of this day and age (which is designed to fight with the Hero 7 Black head to head). Just as a hint (if someone doesn´t know it): H.264 at the bitrate of 100Mbits on the OSMO Action is lower quality than the 78Mbits with the H.265 codec on the Hero 7 Black. You would need at least 150MBits on the H.264 running OSMO Action to match the codec stability of the Hero 7 Black (especially while the camera is moving). The H.264 only option at 100MBits max. kind of ruins the whole usability ...
There are some strange comments regarding these two cameras on this thread. I have both, and to be honest there isn't anything to choose between them. In some areas the Action is better than the hero7, and vice verce. Actually, just as is shown in the video. Both are capable of excellent results
The thing with image smoothing is that it is software based, so it is conceivable that GoPro will be able to improve hypersmooth. I can't see any reason to upgrade from GoPro to DJI, but if I was buying into the market then the DJI would be worth considering. I have DJI products and they do have a bit of a habit of dropping support for models as soon as they bring a new version out so that is a bit of a concern. To be honest I think you could flip a coin and be happy with your purchase but I think I'll stick with the GoPro for now.
Guys it's a nice review but you are missing some major key points of actions cams. How well does it perform at -20°? My Go Pro lasts about 20 minutes, my Insta360 about 2min. How easy is it to use without looking at it? More often than not, an athlete will have it on its helmet. Is the record button easy to press with gloves on? Will it beep to confirm that it's recording? What is the best mode to film in? Is there a Superwide view such as the Go Pro has? You mentioned that the Go Pro is wider than the Osmo, but you concluded that from shooting in 4K which doesn't offer the widest view of a Go Pro. Perhaps, the Osmo also has a superwide view as the Go Pro but only in 2k or 1080p? How does the image quality in 1080p60 compare between the two cameras? What is the general usability like? How durable is it in comparison to the Go Pro? All these are very relevant questions for the target group that this is aimed at. Far more important than the extra stop of DR or better stabilisation is the reliability of the device and the ease of use. When you're freezing your ass off with -20° at the start of a steep ski run, all you care about is that the gear works when you need it, you are stressed enough about the skiing, you don't want to waste energy on that camera. Furthermore, is the stabilisation electronic? Optic? Or a combination of both? If so, can you turn one off or both? Take a shot of a skier with a Go Pro 6 on the head and a Go Pro 7. The shot on the Go Pro 6 will look far more impressive because you see the bumps the skier goes into but it is still stable enough for it to be pleasing to watch. The same shot with the 7's hyper smooth just looks artificial because every bump is absorbed. Go mountain biking with a Go pro on the chest, the 6's image will be too shaky to enjoy watching, the 7's will be pretty good, at times even gimbal like quality. I can imagine you put a lot of work into this video but it is missing the core of what actions cams need to answer to. I know that many people won't care for these aspects as they use it as a travel camera or such. But for sport people, people who do shoot action with it as a daily business, this is what they want to know. This is what action cams were made for.
Scott Cheap you are right with a lot of your questions - we only had the review unit for a few days, so we focused on the (what we think) major points. And, there was no -20°C climate in Vienna at that time ;-)To some of your questions: durability is probably equal, built quality is superb on both. Stabilization is electronic. You can turn off both. Best modes are the 4k modes, they both beep to confirm. Osmo has no superwide. 1080p60 was not compared (not enough time).
I totally agree on this. I simply can't understand why Gopro is not adding 2 mm of thickness on the camera (bigger battery) to actually be usable when going skiing (which they promote so much). 20 min is a bit of a joke to me. I still have the very first hero (Gopro's first model) original battery and it last a full day in the snow. Sure the quality is not the same but I rather have average footage of the run of my life than none (due to a dead battery).
@@JudoSurfer that's ridiculous, neither gopro, apple, dji started from scratch, using the same logic they stole ideas from others to create what eventually became the standard. @@JudoSurfer well gopro tried to steal from DJI and failed miserably rmb. Dji return the favor and is attacking action cam market I would say it is fair game actually. Invariably the deciding factor of a good camera is not its features but the resulting footage. It easy to see the superiority dynamic range with the GoPro right away. Also, wide-angle is a pro for an action camera so additional cropping is actually a compromise for inferior stabilizing capability. The fact that you can choose linear (Hero 5/6) in additions to wide-angle is a bonus feature. I just wish the GoPro offered linear in 4K (strange since most camera narrow their 4K angle, the opposite of GoPro). Also, did not talk about waterproof capability or audio quality. It easy for others to come along after GoPro has done all the work and braved the wild and charted the path. Now that the road had been cleared, everybody want to jump on the bandwagon and reap the benefits.
I was hoping for something to compete with the sometimes goofy issues with gopro, but ultimately it looks like you still get better footage with the hero 7. Hopefully DJI is able to improve with some software tweaks and even more with future models.
And that's the tradeoff, the better battery life on the DJI due to the fact it uses H264 encoding. H265 encoding requiring more processing. Also, Hyperlapse on the DJI is coming very soon as a firmware upgrade.
Excellent comparison guys! Comprehensive and useful. I would also like to know about streaming options with the Osmo Action, BUT the bottom line is the image quality is lower, which renders the camera useless. Thanks for being so quick with this video.
Sehr gut Günter!! Tolle riding!! We needed to see the Osmo Action in a MTB to see if it was worthy to switch from GoPro. We already use a Mavic Air and a Osmo Pocket, so being able to color correct all to look the same is a must. Vielen Dank!!
Thank you as so far only your channel has mentioned about the GoPro mounts as I had the same question like you have said over the years has bought many mounts for different sports/uses so it is nice not starting from scratch again.
Excellent review/comparison. My reaction to is wait for Hero 8 or DJI Action updates on software/firmware. I seem to like the DJI Action user interface, battery life, and the new magnetic ND filters that are now available. As a DJI Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Pocket owner, I may have a slight leaning toward the DJI Action.
I have GH5 and was planning on getting another action camera, the GH7. I also already have Osmo Pocket to go with my Mavic Air, now I'm definitely getting the Osmo Action. I'm thinking I shouldn't have bought the Osmo Pocket in the first place :( the Osmo Pocket draining when connected to my phone is a big letdown.
Iwould buy Osmo Action if they have underwater case available but I just asked today (2019-07-02) from their support and they didn't know if is it coming and when. So my choice is GoPro Hero7.
PalmettoMoon wtf?one inch sensor??they both have 1 2/3 sensors in case you didn't know. And just because a new tech came out it's copied? Osmo Action will soon take the action camera market and you know it.

Just got a new Gopro Hero 7 and you didn’t mention the issues with them. I updated the firmware before I used it. I was using it at 1440/60 with stabilization on. Doing the 1 to 2 minute fast clips. For filming a balloon fest here in town. It was just too hot to hold in the first 10 minutes of off and on recording. Then it corrupted the brand new official sdcard. Then froze. Had to pull out the battery to reboot it. I put in my spare sdcard and it shut off during the next video. Brand new and didn’t last 15 minutes. My IPhone did better. The Gopro is going back in the box and is going back. No excuses for that.
Looks to me that GoPro is still much better. DJI needs superwide etc. also they need HDR with Rock Steady, a mic adapter with ability to use external power source at the same time.
Man in light blue shirt comes across as knowledgeable and trustworthy. Thanks for your insight. I am about to buy a go pro because before your video , I had already seen the sample videos that the DJI video is not as good. There is another TH-cam video of two girls driving in a buggy. I could clearly see that at one point, Rocksteady was trying to apply the stabilization and the video looked bouncy in a steady situation while the go pro was not. I'm not a go pro fan boy, but I did my research before spending 400 euros, and GoPro is making these cams for years already so it makes sense that they have a more well rounded product. Your video confirms my thoughts. I will probably buy another action cam in 4 years, hopefully DJI can beat GoPro by then.
@@edhu6p215 , yes it might be worth to wait for the GoPro usual Sept. release. Gut feeling this next camera will have to really make an impact to meet and beat Dji's Action cam. Between now and Sept. Dji will do what they seem to always do when they release a product before it is ready to perform at it best. Firmware upgrades might make this Dji action cam offering better but I wouldn't buy it till it is supposedly improved to at least perform as well as a GoPro Hero 7!

OMG STOP IT!!! Its not better than Hypersmooth, its cropping the image by 22 PERCENT where the GoPro only crops at 10%. Of course its going to be better, its DOUBLE the crop and you lose the FOV. To say it is better, you would need the crop to be equal to the GoPro crop or even a lower percentage. The GoPro still has a far more superior video quality for an ACTION camera. I will give the DJI credit, if you can tripod it and turn on HDR the video looks much better. But HDR with no EIS is worthless on an action camera. I will also give credit to the battery life, their run time is pretty impressive. However this won't dethrone GoPro, people who have a GoPro 7 won't be switching anytime soon. And people raving about the price??? You can pick up a brand new GoPro 7 off amazon for $366.65 so you are saving yourself a whole $17... Thats also not including their trade in option which knocks $100 off the $399 retail price from GoPro directly.
Yeah, I totally agree with Hypersmooth/RockSteady. I'm still struggling with chosing one of these cams, main advantages of DJI are DWARP at 4k/60FPS, front screen, battery life and low light preformance. GoPro on the other hand got wider FOV, superwide mode, better color science, GPS, and much better smartphone app.
Almost perfect professional review.... only and not so forgivable mistake: hero 7 has still linear mode. And of course you didnt talk about mic. In my opinion hero 7 is still superior.
Narrow angle with stabilization and nasty macro blocking on DJI keeping from buying one. Image looks terrible on any video I've ever seen with it if there's any motion like on a bike or motorcycle. It looks like low bitrate 2.7k upscaled to 4k compared to the Gopro 7/8 Black looking like nice high bitrate 4k in comparison. I hate gopro now as they are buggy and defective most of the time but I put up with it because it looks so much better than DJI. DJI need to fix these problems and I'd buy one or more tomorrow.

I'm thinking I shouldn't have bought the Osmo Pocket in the first place :( the Osmo Pocket draining when connected to my phone is a big letdown.
How do they compare for underwater shots of fish, reefs, etc??
Iwould buy Osmo Action if they have underwater case available but I just asked today (2019-07-02) from their support and they didn't know if is it coming and when. So my choice is GoPro Hero7.
linear mode is still present in gopro hero 7 ....
No gps,no one inch sensor,no external mic port.....eh I'll stick with my GPH7B. They basically copied the GPH7B and you know it.
PalmettoMoon wtf?one inch sensor??they both have 1 2/3 sensors in case you didn't know. And just because a new tech came out it's copied? Osmo Action will soon take the action camera market and you know it.
@@mF.____. They have a 1/2.3" sensor Goob! Know what you're talking about before you go spouting of at the mouth and....I know this! Because unlike you,I at least know how to do my homework.
If you have a GPH7 Will this new camera make your videos better ... no afraid not
The Gopro hero 7 has Linear mode you guys are stating it doesn't have lens correction.
Frankly speaking I feel hero 7 is better
The video quality on this uploaded youtube video is quite low. Any better sources?
I still think the rx0ii is a better option for online creators. But if I had to pick one between the osmo pocket and the action osmo. I would go with the action
sony has overheating problem in 4k
are all accessories compatible for the DJI?
Great review!! I just want to point out that I would have been dead after the first jump on that bike👻😂👌
Dji: can I copy your homework?
GoPro: please don't
Dji: hold my beer
Exactly! DJI too drunk to copy the homework correctly. No 2.7K/120fps? Only in 1080p 🤣 Twice the crop for "Rock Steady"?
@@JudoSurfer two times crop? Oh my
why the FJI osmo action is not so dark like yours in other youtuber‘s review
If i crop 10% in post using image stabilisation in final cut does it not give me similar results to the osmo when compared to the GoPro 7?
It would be similar. GoPro is still better on Hypersmooth with wide angle
4taraxia someone needs to do a video of this and compare. Would be very interesting to see?
All GoPro has to do is add a similar screen to the front to make it an even better all round action vlogging camera !! hmm good idea GoPro ...
When It's fast moving, footages are not sharp at all, just like 480P. I think it's cause of rocksteady processing and low bit rates.
Low bit rates. It's been a dji problem since their use of custom made cameras.
I hope DJI update firmware that.
It has a higher bit rate than the GP, 100 vs 78 bps. The GP has better image processing with colors, sharpness, highlights, and shadows.
Does dji fixed the oversharpening?
Its better in stabilization because it CROPS more. Aka less resolution. Dji is just cheating. Gopro has better colors and contrast.
A lot of people don't get this. Losing usable image is not an advantage.
again justifying your purchase @@krane15
@@dondigutierrez379 Not at all. I just give credit where credit it due. Zooming in to fake more stable footage does not get you credit.
Does the osmo have hyper smooth
Hi the DJI Osmo action stabilization works at 4K 60p?
Raul Licea No
Limited to 4K 30p.
Krane ohh bad news.
RockSteady (Stabilization) does work at 4K 60p
Check out the Operating Time description on the Spec Sheet: www.dji.com/sg/osmo-action/info#specs
Best comparison. Would love to add Sony to comparison tho.
so nice to found a test in mountainbike i was wonder if it would worth to buy it to use it in a chesty.
absolutely! 😁
Can H265 be supported with firmware update or is it just not supported by the hardware?
very nice and detailed and calm overview / test .... thanks guys!
better luck next time DJI.

Does it float, or can you buy a floaty frame like go pro
There’s an app that you can see what you’re seeing on the go pro
Unless you're in immediate need of buying an Action Cam, wait to see what the GoPro 8 will look like. Seems that it's around the corner.
@@JoeMicalizziMPC I did not know that. Thanks for the advice, I think I will wait.
Osmo for sure 👌🏻
Nice comparison. Jist wish you would have compared the audio/mic quality as well.
Gopro's is much better, actually the DJI sounds like crap where this is a little wind involved...

It´s a good camera but far from pissing off GoPro!
Why that red back light? Is it a murder or horror video?
Absolutely Yah!
This is an INCREDIBLY slow talk,
Well done guys! Only one thing, too many ads, seriously, too many
nice
Linear mode is still built into the Hero 7 Black (2.7k, 1080p, etc)
Good catch.
Correct, I am sorry for this oversight. It wasn't there on the Hero 6 Black though.
@@MrGuMac Linear mode is available on the Hero 6 (and even the 4 Black), as well. I use it all the time on both cameras.
Host speaking more than the expert !!
Why is dji dark on your review?
What bike is that?
Specialized Levo Carbon
Gopro still.
Awesome video
Does the EIS on the Osmo Action also work at 4k60fps?
Yes, it does.
@@TomSpurlock Great, thank you
My God. Why you didn't check the low light performance ? Huge mistake for a pro site like yours.
why have you recorded the footage with such drastic difference in exposure?
I want to buy this camera, but this is camera has no 3.5 mm jack. Osmo Action not for me. :((( Sony fdr x3000 has 3.5 mm jack.
So it has linear mode? But not in 4k? does it crop the picture a lot?
@@magnusbergqvist7674in linear mode gopro crop the pic by 10 percent dji 18 percent.
Hero 8 is better than the 7 by allot in image stability. Compared to that , DJI has a lot to be desired but these are 100 cheaper
Can Osmo Action use GoPro accessories?
yes, all except the housing
Go pro is the best
I want to try out an osmo, but just from what I've seen and read so far, i think the hero7 is better.
Awesome Video guys....
Is Gunter maybe Günther? And is he maybe german or austrian? (Because I‘m austrian and I think I recognize the accent
Noah Petek he's Austrian too, and no it's Gunther not Günther :)
Can we reduce the in camera sharpening?
Apparently no!
@@ShutterTech BLAHHHHH. Everything is too sharp in camera to compensate for the baby sensors. GIVE ME CONTROLLLL!
@@billymurphy3 Probably the next generation they give us that control... Meanwhile GoPro have the better action camera!
