POWER at the OFF GRID CABIN! | Generator, Electrical, Buttoning Up, Guests Ep3

  • In this episode we work hard to seal up the cabin from the elements with screws, spray foam and tar paper. We are now working on the outhouse: • Building Outhouse at O...
In between guests to the small cabin, we install the electrical wiring fed from our Briggs and Stratton Q6500 generator. Briggs and Stratton: www.briggsandstratton.com
We build a small outbuilding up and away from the cabin to house the generator and protect it from the elements using reclaimed materials from pallets. metal roofing from a neighbor and cedar siding the was left over from our main cabin build.
Our 6500 generator should be plenty of power to run our lights and small electrical needs in the cabin.
    Q6500: www.briggsandstratton.com/na/...
As always we are using our HD36 Norwood Portable Sawmill.

A big struggle with our cabin is keeping it warm using natural materials that are inherently leaky. So we really need to close in all the gaps.

Whenever we run out of lumber, we just mill more wood from trees that are right on the property. We'll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv's, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient.
We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don't have to kiln dry the wood or let it season.
Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin.
In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

Your thoughts on the whole idea of having something away from the hustle and bustle of everyday routines is right on the money. I have a place out in the country that waits for me to visit on the weekends. I'm not off grid but I too enjoy the silence. At night listening to the Coyotes cry or the hoot hoot of the great Horned Owl. After a night or weekend out there I get recharged for the week coming up and the routine starts all over. Thanks for the enlightenment . I see now why you have a lot of subscribers.

Being up in the mountains away from the city and people, is SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN, to relieve stress. The mountains have positive ions that “recharge” your body. It’s facts! I love the mountains. They mean everything to me. I feel so much closer to my God when I am far far away up in the mountains. It’s a really relaxing and also invigorating! I get so much energy when I am up hiking the mountains! Love it.

Hey, totally resonate with the 'exist' in the city thing, but truly only 'live' in the great outdoors. The amenities of civilization are great - but my soul only recharges when I'm outside. Something about getting connected with how life is all interconnected better there, I guess.

Wow! What a wonderful gift from Briggs and Stratton ! I dig the cabin build man , and , as a former home builder, carpenter , drywaller , roofer, you are doing great. Addressed the air flow situation, which is you main concern with heat loss. That will kick the heat up in the cabin. As long as you have some air flow so excess moisture can escape , like through the roof vent for example, you won’t have a mold issue either - a house needs to breathe a little. The moisture that comes from a human being can be gallons PER day, way more than you would imagine. Keep a goin, it is looking really great man!

That's a clever way to tie the siding together, I would thought to come back nd face nail it but your way is definitely better. When doing cedar shakes in battens Without plywood, you cut the roll of tar paper to the same length of the as the shingles and roll it over each course lapping it the same as the shakes or planks. Cabin is coming together nicely.

Not sure as i havent watched all of the eps. yet. but if you havent took care of the mold problem on the 2x4s yet. if you get a spray bottle and just some bleach in it. That will kill of the mold and prevent it coming back or growing into bigger problem later on. Just a helpful tip.

    • @bulldog5350
      @bulldog5350 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Chakat Nightsparkle You don’t want to spray bleach directly onto active mold without wiping it down with water first. Spraying the bleach on it first can actually cause the mold to shoot spores into the air and make it spread. Learned about this from doing mold remediation.

As long as LED lighting and an LCD TV, you’ll have plenty of power.

get some batteries and use the extra power to charge them so you have some power back up without needing to run the genny

Faenum I understand your point, but batteries are made to be use everyday. If you don’t they ‘’die’’ unless they get charged everyday, this is not a good idea.

While you are at it, you should put in a 12 volt circuit so that you can make use of the batteries that you mentioned you might charge. With batteries you can run 12 volt LED lights, fans and chargers on that circuit without continually running a generator. Also, a small inverter generator would to that more efficient, since it can run for 8 hours on a gallon of gas. For example, the Briggs & Stratton 30651 P2200 PowerSmart Series Portable 2200-Watt Inverter Generator. There are many others.

You guys should get some solar panels. I understand the trees really block out most of the sun but it’ll be nice to have that extra power

Where would they put the solar panels? They are below the forest canopy.
