We bottle up our maple syrup and calculate just how much syrup we were able to produce on our home made evaporator from scrap metal. We also take a property tour and talk about our future build projects near the off grid cabin in the woods. I'll share some very cool trail camera footage of the creek and the animals living in and near it! We also claim our new Eastonmade Wood and meet up with Andrew Easton who walks us through how to cut firewood for our cabin to keep us warm.

I've started being better. I have been less lazy overall, and have implemented better time management tactics and realized were huge time sinks were being wasted in my life. It may not be big for a lot of people, but after several years, I deleted Facebook and twitter from my life, and it has been enough weeks now where I don't think about them, and instead have been using my time to read more. Seemingly simple achievements, but for some people, some mole hills are mountains. Thank you for the encouragement, Woodbeard, and in these strange times of 2019, you seem like an upstanding man who has a wonderful family you deserve. I am sincerely happy for you. I read or heard a quote the other day that I think applies. I admire you, and admiration is seeing others being successful and being genuinely happy for them because they are happy and successful. I interpreted it as the opposite of jealousy. I admire you. And someday, hopefully sooner than later, I hope to have a cabin in the woods where I can get out and do the things I have learned from your channel.

It's the truth. I hate to see people suffer needlessly, but also believe that we need to work toward a better life and that we are all capable of doing so. Its hard to see other people succeed, but when we take part in their success, we also succeed right along side them. Life is about partnerships to me, let's bring everyone up together, there's no need to shove people down just to pretend to elevate ourselves. Let's all grow better together.

If you're reading more i suggest audible. You can continue with your books while cooking, working etc. If i could reccomend some good ones, 1984 by george orwell, the origin of species by charles darwin, a clockwork orange by anthony burgess, platos republic by plato, crime and punishment by fyodor dostoevsky, the old man and the sea by ernest hemingway and the art of war by sun tsu. They may not interest some people but you definentally gain something from reading each of them.
I've read at least half of those. I am a reader, I just got lazy and stopped for a while. Right now I'm halfway through the Tibetan book of the dead. Platos' Republic is chunky. I'm just glad we read it in school with others' being able to talk about it. I haven't tried audible.com yet, ut I've heard good things. I would rather physically read than just listen to audio books, I feel like it gets in my brain better. @@FinkPloyd504

That's a Pileated Woodpeckers work. We had on destroy 2 pine trees at my parents house a few years back and looked exactly like that.
Yes that sure is!!!! I have been camping in Whiteshell Provincial Park. At 05:00 hrs we heard someone banging on something metallic. After about half an hour , got pissed off and found out that it was a Woodpecker pounding on a garbage can lid. LMAO
That was my first guess, but i never seen a woodpecker do that kind of work.

My brother has some land about 5 hours from here. Other than hunting, we didn't visit it enough because of the distance. So, over the winter, I bought an old tractor, refurbished it and delivered it to the property a few weeks ago. Now I've got a good excuse to make the trip and decompress as there's always grass to mow and trees to cut.
Looks like a woodpecker doing some serious work on that tree. Must say good parenting! That kid learning stuff outdoors and doing an honorable work instead of playing videogames and fiddling with iPads. Something that is not that common today. Thumbs up from Sweden!

Underground forts.Me and a childhood friend built one that was quite expansive. Kept a complete secret. Twenty years later the property was being cleared for development and the loggers dropped a skidder in it and the local paper picked it up and tried to solve the mystery.I was up crabbing/fishing the Bering Sea and missed it all. Got home and the friend filled me in. It is still a secret. lol

My wife can't understand how I can spend hour after hour sitting in front of the computer and watch a couple of guys build a small cabin in the woods - I really enjoy DIY stuff and building any kind of project involving carpentry as the basics - I love building "things" requiring my nail gun, circ saw, table saw, etc. and this pandemic is driving me crazy as is the price of wood that I need for my projects. These videos are really enjoyable - maybe not a lot of the video selfies - and I'm still trying how to figure out the order of the videos. Awesome stuff!

Started watching Cabin in the Woods ! Different activities weekly! Could check other herbs out enhance goose and meat recipes. Root veggies and mushrooms grow in the wild most places. Puffball mushrooms are fabulous eating with garlic butter fried pan style. Thanks for sharing!
Our little guy is such a trooper 😀 and he's helpful too. The experiences make for great memories and the knowledge he's gaining is priceless..it'll be passed on for generations to come. I so enjoy watching you guys ❤

You must hear MY tale of woe ! A friend and I spent one cold winter cleaning and carefully opening BLACK WALNUTS using a rubber mallet and little nippers / diagonal pliers. After a few months we split about THREE GALLONS of clean nutmeat. Old jars would have sufficed but I kept mine in a few gallon plastic freezer bag in the refrigerator. about two months later I went to use some in a Banana Bread and the nutmeat was moldy and I had to throw it all out. Broke my heart

I absolutely love the B-roll of kids sledding every time you have clips- it’s so fun to watch kids having a blast outdoors!
I lucked out that my husband and my stepkids love the outdoors, and my closest friend and her daughter do too.
Personally, I don’t feel myself if I can’t get out and spend time outdoors for a while. I daydream of camping and hiking almost daily. I’m lucky in some ways that where I live, I can drive to either the forest, pine scrub, Oceanside, Springs, creeks/rivers, various ecosystems all in less than or within an hour or so drive. (Look for the dead center of Florida on a map, I’ll be waving) I’m not a hunter, but I’m a good shot, my husband shoots competitively. We both rod&reel fish (fresh & salt), but enjoy spearfishing (salt) when the conditions are right. I asked for a folding saw for Christmas... but I’m also an artist, work in art/technology/filmmaking/education, a professional photographer, and general maker of things.
I think some folks have just fallen into the convenience and ease of modern life to the point they feel out of place outdoors for any period of time. I get depressed if I can’t go into nature or see wildlife... like when parks and forests closed during lockdown... that sucked.

70 years ago I used to read the sap buckets out in front of the house I loved it then what was left my mom would take into the house and make maple syrup to this day I still love it nothing better than some maple syrup on a waffle cooked on a Griswold waffle maker

I was thinking about your pecker problem and realized that the pecker probably found a nest of cicada eggs and cocoons in that tree and that's why the holes are so large! It's a good thing in my opinion that the pecker eats the cicada's they are a plague! Just my opinion though!

I have a list I call my "To Eliminate" list. I list out problems (like "bed isn't comfortable" or "not enough storage"), then underneath each problem I brain storm a list of mitigation tasks. When all of the tasks are complete, I consider the problem solved. I have a monthly "Elimination Day" where my only chore of the day is to check at least one thing off the list, although I usually check off a few at a time.

great machine my buddy near Ottawa got one all you need is a conveyor to stack the wood . I believe they sell that too . Like your videos great showing.

Growing up I watched a mated pair reduce 2 100' ft. Cedars to a mushy stump over a decade. It was amazing how much damage a Cedar tree can take still be standing.

Soo you definitely need a sponsor so you can make more Maple syrup next year & sell it to help sponsor your adventures to various locales & improvements to the property. Just a thought on the access to the opposite back corner of the property. Use the chainsaw in conjunction with the portable splitter to cut a path/roadway back to a "staging area" from which it'll be easier to build the new lofted cabin. That way its less invasive to the wildlife. But I love the idea of a lofted hunting cabin. Would love to see more of you and Mark & Jer getting out hunting. Keep up all the awesome content!

Hey woody, if you cook with just a couple of inches of sap In the pan and the have a drip method of sap entering the pan, you will have better efficiency of your wood. If you fill the pan, you loose a lot of heat in the side of the pan. I set metal cans next to the firebox and it heated the sap before it goes in the evaporator. Yah woody you make dirt look like gold.
Because maple syrup is a low acid food it would have to be pressure canned. which isn’t hard to do it just requires a pressure canner and it takes more time. Yesterday I watched a video of yours about foraging and preserving the wild leeks aka ramps. When you’re water bath canning you need to use a pot deep enough so that you have 1-2 inches of water above the top of the jars so that they are submerged.
After years of service and a war, recovering from injuries, I just keep pushing out to do more. Enjoy your videos and one day I'll have my own place. Won't be able to do all the physical tasks, but that isn't going to stop me. Long winded answer of what I've been doing? Being resilient and not letting my injuries hold me back from living.

Hi from the land down under. You've certainly inspired me to a big change of life with your videos. Friends recently bought 80 acres an hour inland from Taree in NSW, Australia.I've spent a few weeks up there helping them finish off a small cabin that was there when they bought the property. I'm now working on clearing out my house of some of the stuff I've hoarded over the last 15 years, buying a small caravan to live in while I clear a few acres for myself to build a small cabin, and then I'll be selling my house in suburbia to go live off grid in the woods. It's amazing what you do, I live in the city but use to love making forts with friends in the forrest. Your videos made me want to go back out to the woods and start doing what I used to again with more to it. I now go out on weekends whenever I have the time the spend some nights by a fire, I even tried eating some bark like you did, and I can say it wasn't the greatest. Wish I could see the cabin in person it looks amazing. Please don't stop making TH-cam videos! 😁

I grew up in the woods I love being connected to nature. Now that I live in the city I miss it sooo much so any opportunity I get I go out in the woods. Wish i lived in Canada cause I would come join you guys in the beautiful outdoors. 💗💚🙂🌲🌲

I'm an Aussie! Iron bark is some hard wood but that's not the hardest out here. The wood splitter looks mean and will chop anything by the looks of it ! I don't think it'll have a problem with any of the wood down here! Also the maple syrup looks amazing !!!! I'd love to get my hands on some!!
An experiment you may want to do is melt just your ice and see what you get. I’ve been told by many syrup boilers that any ice you pick out of your sap is like free runtime in the boiler. Supposedly sap doesn’t freeze only water. Letting your sap freeze and picking out the ice is equivalent to boiling it partially down.
Possibly, but I've had it frozen solid to the bottom too!

Underground bases. Ah.. I remember that as a young teen. I had spent weeks digging a hole around 5 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Got it all nice and put a roof on it with dead fall and fur boughs. The next week we had a storm. When it was over and I went back to check on the base, the roof was still there so I was stoked.. ... However, we have clay soil... I no longer had a den, I had a pond.

I think one of the dest decisions my gf and I made was about 3 years ago when we joined a black powder gun clud. Every long weekend there is a shoot somewhere. We travel to different clubs for the weekend camp in primitive styles, cook as they did back in the day, dress in old style clothing and shoot our black powder guns. It's all friendly competition. Most of all it gives us something to look forward to.

Seems like you should add to your Merch sales by adding your home made goods to your list of items. Add your syrup ,your fruit leather, beaver stew (maybe add some rice or pasta to stretch it out) , fresh berry syrups also to go over pancakes.

Man you brought back some memories talking about digging to China. I managed a 4 foot ramped hole in our backyard over a weekend using a Tonka Toy road scraper. My dad had been on a business trip and was not appreciative of the effort that took.

I have been putting together memorial books for family that include knowledge my grandpa handed down about foraging and fishing. They are nothing on the level that you do. It is just things like granddad using a gunny sack to keep turtles off his fish in the water instead of a stringer, his knots, his horrible jokes, etc.,. Just a few things that I did not want to lose to time.
It feels a whole lot better writing it all down and reseeding the knowledge to the next generation.
Also, thanks for always being concerned about the energy cost for homesteading. I get so excited about making things, that I forget that they can drain more energy than they give. God bless your family and friends, and remember morel season is sneaking up fast.

i don't know if you've tried using a wider and lower pot to boil the pail. With the broader pot you have larger surface area, easing water molecules to vaporize, thus reducing boil time and wood usage
thats how its made melaço, the sugar cane syrup, and rapadura, the cristalized sugar in form of a block, and very dark.

The rough easy way is to just double the Celsius and add 30. Or in reverse, subtract 30 from the Fahrenheit and divide by 2.

FYI, it is best to put hot syrup in the jars to make a seal or it could spoil. Also, put the lids in hot water to soften the rubber seal.
I live in the southern USA, Virginia to be specific, and we make what's called sorghum or molasses or sorghum molasses...depending what part of the South your from. We boil it down the same way you do, except it's made from sugar cane. You've probably heard of it. It was/is used by moonshiners to distill liquor.

My dream has been fishing for northern pike. So I purchased a runabout boat 13ft with a 35 hp outboard. The house is on the market today. Watching your channel is inspiring, knowing I want to be in Michigan's U.P.. I am going to build probably a 24x24 ft (7.3mx7.3m) cabin.
