Pretty much left my entire family in my dust; they are all negative and only care about using people for money and weed; they were not adding anything positive to my life or my son's life; so we moved on and we are much happier for it.

Sounds like another cdn father trying to prep his kid for the nhl. Yeah some smaller kids make it with a good work ethic, but gotta have the talent .
As for the question, had to write off an old home town friend who was just getting too much. Stopped taking his calls , and soon after he entered hospital and died a month later, at age 50, of level 4 cirrhosis . Talking to a mutual friend afterward ,turns out the guy was drinking 2 litres of hard liquor a day just to function. Knew he was a big boozer but never heard of that kind of drinking from him . He was a class A bs'er , and talking to him was becoming a waste of time.Oh yeah he died owing money . Never paid his school loans which had amassed to near $100K , owed the mto like $15K for fines /tickets and god knows what else.
On the other hand been written off by my brother who lives in the states and fancies turning his daughters into some super success stories. Sending them to ivy league schools at a rate of $50k USD /yr /kid. And he's no millionaire. Had not spoke to him in over 10 yrs. Guess i wasn't a big enough success for him. That's the ugly side of this pushing kids to greater heights

We are battling the constant battle of electronics here as well. Making some headway with the youngest, but the older two are established in their ways. Middle kid is starting to see the light - not provided by a screen- as I drag her along to do more fun things (usually involves wheels and go fast)
I just fear that the what looks to be a heavy winter coming, I am going to lose headway with them. Even dragging them out to go sledding is a battle.

Was thinking that you burned a lot of wood you could have used in your wood stove, at very least for kindling? Didn't make sense to me to just burn it all when it could be used for heat/ starting the fire?

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

It's too low density, burns too fast, makes a mess. The wood stove is so small, it would take more to feed, process, that it would be worth. Our wood is so well seasoned, that it burns well, hot, and long. Yes, we could have saved back some kindling for stater, but we have a lot.

It is hard to watch a resource being used in such a manner. Living in suburbia and being an age where I am not going to be cutting my own firewood seeing fuel torched like that flies in the face of my frugal nature. It must be hard for folks that live in areas where there is no hard wood to watch that also. I like that Chris told us that they get firewood for free from arborists. In my area the arborists are all firewood purveyors as well. It is nice that Chris has a good resource.
Chris' comment is also appropriate. The softwood burns so quickly that it forces you to feed the stove frequently. Those who must burn softwoods get used to that. We who are spoiled with hardwoods have a hard time using softwoods. Either they frustrate us or we get irresponsible softwood. Hardwood is much easier to maintain a good combustion efficiency.
I am also minded of a discussion Chris had in season 1 about returning the resource and good forest stewardship. Even if the softwood was the only firewood source there is such a plethora that the stewardship outweighs the seeming waste.

I love this video! Its like you had me in mind when you said what u did at the end. I have struggled with wanting acceptance from ppl for years, but im finally able to just let the ones who dont accept me walk out the door. Example: a guy i thought was a cool guy was tellin people how much of an "inconvenience" it was to go fishing with me because of my being in a wheelchair and unable to go to some of the places he goes. I quit asking if he wanted to go and found 3 other people who were happy to go with me. I had to leave him behind to find the people who actually wanted to be in my life. And i love how you're not letting Holden fall into the mold that most kids today have gotten trapped into. Tell him to never stop pushing towards his dreams. But no matter how long of a break he takes its never too long to start again. I lifted weights from jr high thru highschool and stopped when i graduated, and ending up putting 200 pounds on. I started goin to the gym again and im down 70 pounds, and today i even bench pressed 225 lbs which was the heaviest i ever lifted in highschool so i tied it. Keep up the good work to both of u. To Holden, treasure these life lessons, id give my life to hear just one more from my dad (who passed in may). And to chris, you could literally change the channel to nothin but your end of the video philosophy talks and id still watch, although im glad you do more lol.

Couldn't agree more about leaving folks behind. I had to leave behind buddies that I had known since high school, because my interests/beliefs changed, and they were still stuck in their late teen activities/ mentality, and we were in our 40's. I miss them at times, but new friends came along and life went on.

And it continues to be my favorite activity to this day. I have loved and will always love to do all the same things that you do on this channel. I think that the talk at the end of the video had a lot of value in it, and your concept makes total sense to me. Both you and Holden keep up the excellent work.

I'm really thankful for these talks. Please do more. You have come through a lot and came on top of it. That is such an inspiration.
Holden: Great job! Putting in the effort is worth it, as you already know. Games are great, they help relax and you can learn a lot from them. But in the end they are just tools. You have to know the limits, understand and realize when it is no longer helping you, but dragging you back. That applies to everything and everyone though.
Sometimes you need to leave things or people behind, so you can grow and evolve in a better version of yourself. It is not about pushing those things or people away from you. It is about You pushing yourself so far ahead, that they end up far behind you in the dust.
I wish you good luck in your efforts, get yourself the life you will love to live, because you deserve it.

What you said is very true, after I got married, all my friends still wanted to party and get wasted all the time and my mindset changed to being productive and successful. Now that I have kids I'm glad I made that choice, so I can be a good influence for my girls. I always love to hear your thoughts on life and anything in general. Much love 🤙

As a 29th year high school physics teacher, let me tell you, teaching him that effort yields results, is key to any goal...Holden, sometimes someone else has a little more natural talent, and even after your hard work you may not be the best, but don't that keep you from trying your best every time, it pays off in many ways.

Good for you Wooded Beardsman, it's awesome putting your son on the right track. Coming from a background where you live in the city 24/7 but every now and then you head to the country just to relax. Also trying to do something that you seem interested in or love doing, it takes practice and time to get there, so just believe Holden and keep working harder and harder everyday, push yourself more and more and soon it will pay off.

Full stop.. Your right.. Been waiting a while now to see the cabin finished.. I couldn't agree more with your concepts with your little one.. Why aren't there more dad's like you out there (generally speaking).. I'm sure there are several great dads out there.. Without great parents children will never excel past their own expectations and self doubt.. I believe that goes with anyone.. With that kind of teaching Holden's possibilities are endless.. To him I say good job little man! You have great parents that love you to death. You keep at it and focus on what you want in life you'll get it for sure. I don't have to tell you to listen to them cuz you obviously do a good job at that also.. Carry on! ✌

The leaving people behind talk was really eye opening and taught me something about relationships and how to approach them. Proud of holden and his hard work, your a strong and motivational father. Hats off to you man and I hope youtube is feeding you better than those beavers did!

What inspiring words you give to your son, and your viewers! I've been watching your channel now for a whole day, watching this entire build. You're a father figure I never had, and your son is lucky to have a father like you. You also inspire me as well to become a good father when I have kids some day. Though I am a little concerned about the dead lift form of your son, I was a professional weight lifter for 2 years and dead lifts be lifted in such a way that the bar stays in contact with the legs and is finally stretched out with the hips past the shoulder and knees locked, also some slower reps would help him get the form right as well. I understand you maybe don't want to take this advice, I only mean good when I say it. I don't want a child having back problems at 20. It's an inspiration to see such a young child want to get good at something he loves doing. Tschüss

Great video, there is a lot of good sentiment in there!
Holden; Keep it up, there are so many people in our world who have no direction in life and it all starts from these early years.
So many people dismiss it and think "oh I can do that next year" but here is a simple truth, the longer you wait the harder it gets, so keep up with your goals and dreams now while they are fresh and you have the energy to pursue them, don't feel beholden to people who have different interests.
Oh and listen to your parents! You'll understand why when you have kids of your own...

You're awesome man. Great advice and Holden is blessed to have an influence like you. Getting outside is so critical to basic life development and yet it is becoming rare amongst kids today. As a single father of 2 early teens, I'm trying regularly to get them outside. Next time they want to hang out inside and watch TH-cam, I'm going to suggest they check out this video. I'm still catching up as I only found your channel last week.

Hey Holden(sorry if I misspelled your name) people are like filters, and as you grow older and start having new interests or goals the people in your life will filter themselves in and out of your life as needed every person that comes into your life will teach you something, with your down to earth personality and some inner reflection and thoughtful considerations you will identify what each person is there to teach you. Sometimes when you meet people that you like and can/could consider to be a friend, the lesson you learn from them might be learned faster than you want but may be forced to lose that person in your life..don't despair though cause they will be replaced with another good person soon enough..and some people will teach you what you don't want in your life, or what you don't like about some people. The hardest part about knowing about these filters is losing a close friend that you hold dear to your heart..you can always meet the later if you need to have them in your life..but if your observant in your friends and their behaviors then you might find yourself selecting what you want in a friend don't let habits good or bad get in the way of a friendship, that may hold you back from making a good decision for yourself, for example you and a buddy are always hanging out then you meet a girl who you want to spend time with your friend may get jealous of her because you spend more time with her than him..it happens, good friends don't always need your attention and will make you a better person .sorry for the long windedness but I could go on lol but don't want to bore you. If you want a good example of a good friendship your dad and Jeremy are a great example lol, even though they're not always together their friendship is solid and they both have freedoms..
