  • In this episode we work hard to seal up the off grid small cabin from the elements with a custom build door. As always we are using our HD36 Norwood Portable Sawmill. We are now working on the outhouse: • Building Outhouse at O...

As the cabin warms, we also take advantage of the luxury of making our first warm meal on the wood stove: rabbit stew and Kevin makes himself an egg sandwich.
A big struggle with our cabin is keeping it warm using natural materials that are inherently leaky. So we really need to close in all the gaps and get the windows in.
Whenever we run out of lumber, we just mill more wood from trees that are right on the property. We'll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv's, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient.
We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don't have to kiln dry the wood or let it season.
Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin.
In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

For sure! But to be honest, for the cabin to really last, they should get linnen oil (i hope its linnen oil... not a native english speaker and translators spew bollocks) and coat every wooden thing with it. That will keep the parasites out, it will keep the moisture just right for wood and so on. Our family has a small house that is well over 100 years old and it still has the same wooden structures around, keeping them safe with the oil. Those things last!

Nice use of half lap joinery on the door. Tough to do that type of work on site. We used pegged half lap joints on our rafters. I didn't put headers in my gable ends. One reason people leave them out is to avoid thermal breaks. I like the door. I just finished making a door also, and it has some love blemishes too. Hopefully get it installed next week. Keep up the good work the cabin is looking great.

I always use headers wherever a "hole" is cut through the framing. Doors and windows get headers. Interior doors get headers even through non-load bearing walls because structural framing is removed to make the "hole" in the wall. I haven't done any framing lately but 40 years ago I framed apartment buildings in Los Angeles. I learned carpentry from master builders.
