My grandmother was the one who got me into JRPGs (she was an awesome human being) and this was one of the first games she and I collaborated on beating when I was a kid (she did most of the puzzle solving and I helped get her past the parts that required twitch reflexes). When I wasn’t visiting her we swapped hints over the phone and helped each other find items (she more than me). Even though I was the one who beat the bosses, she did most of the heavy lifting, and pretty much figured this whole game out on her own. To this day I can’t see this game without thinking of how lucky I was to have such an amazing grandmother.
@geovaughan8261 Thats really cool. My dad was the one who gave me my love of video games. He didnt have much use for the NES though, he was a PC gamer. I like the idea of gaming grandmas. Don’t feel bad, I bought it, and STILL didn’t know what you’re supposed to do. The instructions weren’t a tutorial after all, just the standard NES instructions of this character has this attack and this power. Everything else wasn’t mentioned much, if at all. Bear in mind, the pause glitch utilized here extensively wasn’t known to most of us back then.
I beat it, but it took years, I owned this game, mario/duck hunt and xmen for the longest time so often it was all I had when I got tired of mario, (xmen just sucked)
I'm embarrassed to say that I missed the ladder leading down on the opening screens my first few times playing the game. I was very confused about what I was even supposed to do. This was with the manual, mind.
I was born in 1986 and this game was one that my father would use to his advantage. As a young kid, he'd show me what to do next when I was stuck, but only if I did some sort of house chore or tell me the next day to get me to go to bed. With so many games this tactic was used leading to the retro/forever gamer I am today. "Getting what you can't have, well, that's some good motivation to listen to your parents". -Hads('90)
the reason why it rated so low . Its not user friendly or self explanatory at all. you are just plopped in a dungeon wandering around for hours looking for who knows what. Zelda was difficult but you had an objective . It was designed to be complex but do able and interesting in contrast to this game which is odd and vague . Nothing is straight forward or obvious to aid the player. i personally didnt like this game. Lost interest in it fast
There's something rather uplifting about a game that centers around a mom, dad and their kids working together to save the world as well as the fact that the first born son starts off "weaker" than everyone else but ends up being the one to take on the game's big bad. A coming of age story but this time the hero's family is along for the ride. That doesn't happen often with these kinds of games.
Using Xemn with the armor to get Pochi's crown is a good idea. However, the armor is bugged. Even with the armor, sometimes the mobs you kill on touch will damage you anyway. This has happened to me a couple of times against the instadeath mimic. An alternative is to go down one screen from the crown, and farm the spawning fireballs that appear near the shop and inn with the power boots until an invincibility potion spawns. Then you can collect it and climb back up to jump past the instadeath mimic. ...Pochi would have been the obvious 4th boss choice, if only his invincibility carried over to the boss fight. Sadly, it doesn't. ...Also, the most common drop that spawns from mobs is based on your lowest stat of life, magic, or gold. You can make fewer trips to the Inn by maxing your gold, which then you'll get mostly bread & potion drops from mobs.
I loved this game as a kid. My older brother bought it so thanks to him reading the manual, I was aware of the goal. I got all the crowns as a kid, but teleporting using the princess images was something I was not aware of until much later when I beat the game was an adult. It's one of the few complete-in-box NES games I own because it's JUST THAT GOOD
One of my top 5 favorite NES games! An underrated gem for sure! A pioneer in “open world” platforming. Lots of replay value and great puzzle solving mechanics. Faxanadu is also one of my favorite NES games. Would love to see a remake of this game. (PS I did beat it when I was a kid! It was a combination of calling the Nintendo Power line and as well ordering a complete map of the game, which I can’t remember where that came from.)
I grew up during this era and I still don't understand how anyone was ever supposed to figure any of this out lol. Good stuff Also: Looking forward to when you release a video for Milon's Secret Castle
Milon's Secret castle was just mean, which probably means it will make a good video. I was able to beat this one by having the instruction manual, drawing maps, and discovering how powerful the Power Knuckle/Fist thing was. I never found the Shield, and probably never would have, so I had to use Elixers to make up for it. I also had to start the game over once I was about 75% of the way through because there was no way I could beat the 4th Boss as Lill. This game is crazy hard!
Legacy of the Wizard always reminded me of all the false block bullshit of Milon's Secret Castle, but stretched out to a hundred screens and one thousand times the grinding and item management.
@@judethaddeus9856 What guide? The only thing it came with was the instruction manual. And the only thing in the instruction manual is a description of the items, and how to move the blocks with the glove. "The hardest part of the game is the area you have to move blocks to solve puzzles." Even the manual writer realized the control design for block moving was atrocious.
I completed this game in exactly one month using only the instruction manual. Amazing ending. The action difficulty is pretty moderate so I'd just wander the labyrinth for ages. The great music really helps me stick with a game... See also Blaster Master. I remember finding the shop with the shield on a misinput and my mind was blown in the same way as finding level 7 in Zelda -- both quests!
Wow! That game was so cryptic when I tried to play it. To think on my attempts that the map took me in the wrong directions every time so that explains why I got nowhere fast. Nintendo Power didn't offer any help much either.
I remember Nintendo Power answering one question in their Counselor's Corner section, but what we really needed was a breakdown of what all the items were for, and what parts of the dungeon we should be exploring with which character, where is the Shield hidden, - that sort of thing! I really think the game developers could have spent less than 15 minutes programming a text screen at the beginning of the game that said "Find the 4 Crowns so that Roas can find the Dragonslayer Sword, and defeat Keela! Each family member has different strengths that will be useful in different parts of the dungeon. Pay attention to which items each character can carry!" It would have been that simple, and made this game make so much more sense to a lot of people.
A very well done walkthrough. I've been looking for a channel like this for years ever since I used to have video game VHS tapes as a kid. Your walkthrough is VERY detailed so thank you for that. I've had this game for 20+ almost 30 years now and didn't know some of these things, especially the 100+ damage mimic. But here is something I'll mention, I'm not sure you are aware of. Holding UP on the controller when you fall will prevent damage. You'll still bounce but you won't take any damage. I believe holding up also works when you walk over spikes. You earned yourself a subscriber. I'm going to definitely check out your other videos if they are half as detailed as this. Thank you.
I had so much fun getting lost in this one. For my first playthrough, I only used the instruction manual. I struggled a bit on the later bosses because I'd have never found the shield, but I had a blast uncovering the game's secrets!
It is. I had it when I was younger and understood nothing, but i replayed it in 2011 with a LPr Deceased Crab as a guide and have played it at least 1x a year since. *Really feels like a Metroidvania in addition to being an early one
I loved it when I was a kid I got it for my bday one year and gotta admit my mom really killed it with her choice! I played it again two or three years ago and besides the family’s pet part (haven’t watched video yet but best to do first iirc for the special item you get.” I remember being sad that there was nowhere else to use the character as it was my favourite character. That said you can use him to grind or you can scout ahead since he doesn’t take damage
I played this game for at least 100 hours as a kid and dozens of hours as an adult and still could only get but so far. Now, finally I can see how this game is properly played
Brother, you and the pups have come through for me again. The walkthrough of Xemn's section and the routing you suggest finally got me an original hardware clear. (Did have to adjust a tiny bit at the end due to some region differences, but for there.) Thomas, buddy, wherever you are, we finally got it.
Yep for me too, as even thought on doing Pochi's area with Xemn years ago, the roadblock of how to deal with the chest mimics eluded me until this video. While that's great design on the part of the game creators, it's kind of lame how if you don't scramble past the monster to the hidden path straightaway (by going to the left for instance) touching the monster again even with the armor will kill you regardless.
My uncle gave me this game as a kid for the nes, and I loved it. Didn’t know wtf I was doing but the music was awesome. It took me 25 years to finally find it again. Never met anyone else that’s played this game.
As a kid, we rented this a few times for the weekend. Never saw past the first few screens because i knew nothing about how to advance. Mind you, at that age, i DID beat Legend of Zelda, and was caapable of getting to Wily in Mega Man 2. This was just too complex for younger players.
Wow, I love this channel. My uncle gave me this game when I was around 8 yrs old. I didn't beat it until I was in my thirties and with a cheat code. Such a gem.
Loved renting this game as a kid, even though none of my friends or I ever managed to beat it back then. I subsequently went back about fifteen years later armed with a FAQ and finished it. Felt so damn good! About the only tip/hint I didn't see you cover is that if you hold Up on the control pad, you can actually walk across any spiked floor (and I THINK even on top of enemies) without taking damage. I don't remember which one of my little group figured that one out, but it was super helpful for canceling out the damage if you missed a jump. Never knew you could pause the game to cheese out of fall damage though! That's mega-awesome! :)
I still love this game. Took a large part of my childhood to figure it out without the manual. All I had was one of those rental store printouts when we bought it secondhand, and the few times there were articles in Nintendo power about it.
This game was so hard when I was a kid. I spent months trying to figure out how to beat it. I was so proud of myself when I finally finished it without any help or cheats.
it took forever, but there's a code system in the game that lets you kinda have a save system. I remember the codes being super long and when you're a kid you have sloppy hand writing so I'd have these barely legible codes that I'd have to decipher@@KingofCrusher
I got this game when I was around 7 on clearance from at kb toys was the only nes game I ever got new. I played it for weeks but never got anywhere lol.
As a young child, I was super hyped for this games release. When i finally got a chance to rent it, i couldn't figure out what to do. It took me until the last day of the rental to realize there was a ladder you had to go down. I will always remember that. As i got older, i gave this game a few more tries. I enjoy it now, but still haven't beaten this one. Thanks for the video!
This is the first game on your channel that I've never even heard of. It looks amazing! I'm finishing up the paperwork to disown my parents later today since they obviously didn't love me as a child. If they had, I definitely would have played this game growing up.
This was by Broderbund, the same company that made another NES game that was notorious. Is it possible to beat Deadly Towers? Maybe U Can Beat Video Games would make a video of that game sometime?
I had this game as a kid. It probably took me the longest time to figure out how to beat it among all of my NES games (again, no internet in the late 80's).
"Pause the game to avoid fall damage" "Attack the Inn and it will turn into a shop" OH SURE, why didn't I expect that. Yeah I had one buddy who beat this game, but I was just baffled by it. I kept thinking you were supposed to play the game with the character you LIKE, as if it was Final Fantasy or Mario2.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I did a Ton of that, bought most of the gear, killed a ton of enemies, and had no clue what I was supposed to be doing... but it was fun trying to figure things out. LOL Not sure if I ever got any crowns, been a long time now
I 100% agree at how under rated this game is. This was the only NES game I was any good at. Makes me sad when I mention it and nobody has ever heard of it.
The ONLY way I was able to make progress in this game was to use the game genie, so much I didn't understand not having the booklet. This was fascinating!
I played this game almost as much as Crystalis back in the day. I never found any of the crowns, but the characters with different abilities was cool, the music was good, and I always thought the castle in the background all the way to the left of the house was neat. Fun personal fact: back in 2010 to 2011-ish I got a new laptop and, after redownloading my emulators and ROMs, decided to try some of the old favorites again. I played Legacy of the Wizard for a bit, was totally lost, and decided to look up a guide. I thought "hey, maybe somebody recorded themselves playing it on TH-cam," and found Deceased Crab's LP. And that's the story of how Legacy of the Wizard led me to discover the concept of Let's Plays.
Sometimes I wonder what your history with games is. A speed runner? A collector? A developer from back in the day? Whatever you are. I'm glad you're here. You are a one person Nintendo Power magazine in video form. Thank you so much for the library you have created.
Love your videos. Music to game needs a touch more volume. I remember my mom bought me this game when I was 6 or 7 years old as a surprise. I knew it was special from the music and sound effects. Hours of mindless wondering. I felt like Moses in the desert.
Just found your videos.. I remember playing this game with my mom, when it first came out. We never got too far in it but sure enjoyed trying! I wish she was still with us to have seen your video. Thank you for this, my friend!
I think this was the first UCBVG video I watched. I come back to it every once in a while for the excellent playthrough and commentary. You’ve got something special here, UCBVG. I’m glad you’re now at 100 games and counting.
This game is so difficult that even after watching your video tutorial I’m still lost Just kidding I really appreciate you taking the time to do this Epic Playthrough 😎👍
I got this game as a Christmas present with no knowledge about it. I liked it enough to put it in and wander around a few times. The instruction manual really did do a lot of heavy lifting. One day, I found Lyll's crown and, "OOOOHHHHHHHHH!!!" It all clicked. Later that day I found Pochi's crown. Fast forward a year, I had eventually beaten it. There is nothing like being 10 years old with no internet and feeling the lightbulb come on.
Played this as a child and learned quickly that the labyrinth is just too damn confusing. So started making a map and found two or three of the crowns. Wanna go back and finish this one day. But if I can't, it was nice to see it done... and the ending.
There I was at Half Price Books in Tacoma, WA. They had a copy of this sitting on the video game shelf. I immediately knew I was buying this game. Countless hours of fun shall be had
I waited for two years after watching this upload to try my serious attempt at beating this game so that I wouldn't remember the extremely thorough and detailed walkthrough tips you gave. I still remembered the tricksy block pushing with Xemn, but otherwise the only thing I had to look up was where the dragon shield was (without it, those bosses had me almost throwing my controllers like I was 9 again lol). It really makes me wonder how anyone would even have found it in the first place. This video was probably my first of your uploads that I watched through and also my favorite one for one of my favorite games. You've done even better work on these since, and I hope 2024 is your best year yet.
I remember renting this game in the video store as a kid. I was blown away by the scope of it. Since I didn't have a walkthrough, I had to YOLO my way thorugh it, and I nearly beat it a few times. Then I lost the game when we moved away from the video store and only just now rediscovered it as a 39-year-old man. :D
This is an old video but I’m having a blast watching this! My first console growing up was a PS1 so games like this were well before my time. It’s really cool seeing how many modern tropes and gimmicks are actually long lived and fully realized reflections of older games. This is a rogue-like from before I was born!
Thanks for making this video!!! I have a similar sentiment to some comments I saw. I played this as a kid with my family and could never get anywhere. This brings back so many memories! I still have the original cartridge in my living room, lol. I play on an emulator now just to avoid any hardware gremlins. I am going back and playing all the games I never finished as a kid, I hope your channel has more! These days, I want to explore more and see everything I missed out on, so I use game genie codes. Maybe later I'll give my library a go without any assistance. Anyway, thanks again. You're a legend!
I recall this game.... I never could figure out where to go or what to do. I felt so overwhelmed. If only the game helped us understand what to do without the book. It might be. Nice to try it out with save states and such nowadays.
Found this game cart at a Savers a few years ago which sparked off all my memories of this game over a friend's house. It's one of my favorite possessions.
I remember seeing this at my friend JP's house. JP, if you grew up in Vancouver, WA in the 80's I remember! This game to me was "the game you could play as the dog", that was the coolest thing I remembered. He and his dad had spent hours playing through this game, not sure if they ever beat it or not. The weirdest thing looking back is I swear the "dog" actually looked like a dog rather than a little monster.
I was fascinated by this game as a small boy of six or seven. Spent hours and hours just exploring the labyrinth beneath and always finding something new. Did not beat it until I was a teenager, but loved it all the same.
Thanks fender! Glad you're enjoying the channel, and this under appreciated game. Seriously - I think if they put just ONE screen of text that told you what the goals of this game were, I think it would have been a lot more popular.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames agreed, but back in the NES days, the developers expected you to have and keep the manual close by. There were so many games back then that were so much easier to understand with the manual
I remember when a local movie store went out of business when I was young, they were selling bundles of NES games 4 for $5, and I got this as well as Guardian Legend, Bionic Commando and Contra in one bundle😂😂😂 I loved every one of them. I bought 3 more packs from the store before it closed. Really helped me build my collection.
Bit late to be commenting on this old video, but just a couple tips and tricks that it missed which might come in handy for others playing the game: You can cross over spikes without taking damage quite easily by just holding up on the D-pad while walking over them. That's it! Doesn't work for those narrow passages where there's only one block between the spike and the ceiling -- you need Meyna's wings to get over those, period -- but for every other set of spikes in the game, as long as you're holding up on the D-pad, you won't take any damage at all. Also, in Lyll's area, you can skip right to the crown from very near the beginning by using multiple pause jumps in a row. It takes a bit of practice, but it's a strategy used by speedrunners because it is absolutely the quickest and easiest way to get to her crown, cutting out virtually her entire chunk of the dungeon. And finally, it's worth noting that the family's name is not actually Drasle! That title is literally just to say that they're the "Dragon Slayer Family." The family's name is officially Worzen. And in the Japanese version (as seen on the MSX2 version's title screen), for some reason, Meyna is Maia, and Roas is Royas.
I loved this game. Yes, you are absolutely coorect. This is game is awesome. Thank you for doing tbis video and bringing it back to my life. I find it to play it again. And with your help, it should be a breeze. Great work, keep doing what you are doing.
I had this game when I was a kid and musta played it thousands of times. Was able to figure out some stuff but never got close to beating it. Still love this game and the soundtrack is great as well. Thanks for posting this!
I rented and played this game so much as a kid, and I actually was able to beat the first two bosses, but I didn't get much further than that. Now that I have this video as a resource, I just might have to go back and try it again. Thanks for the great video and stay safe out there!
It's games like this that made me think I was a stupid child. I could beat Ninja Gaiden or Contra without codes, but could never beat games like this or Zelda 2 , Metroid, Simon's Quest, etc etc. It never even occurred to me to randomly shoot the environment in those games to look for items. Just killed all the enemies and wandered around until I got pissed.
Got this game for my birthday when I was in grade school - pretty sure it, along with Astyanax, were in the bargain bin. It wasn't until years later when Nintendo Power revealed a rudimentary map outline to each crown, and *The CODE* of course, that I was able to best this beast.
@@rustyjones7908 It's pretty good. Not great by any stretch of the imagination, but has nicely large sprites for the NES, controls well, decent music, story cutscenes between levels...it can get pretty difficult as it goes on with cheap enemy placement. Area & Level bosses pose only a marginal risk - I usually die to tiny enemies I missed than bosses. Heck, the final level is an area boss-gauntlet before you take on the final boss.
My dad definitely used Nintendo Power, but I have specific memories of the paintings being used to travel.. and some of these items too. There's no way I beat this game as a kid, but thank you for helping me beat it as an adult.
Thia looka like a hidden gem to me.......Starting playing it today. Love this channel. As a kid I found Sega games easy to at least pick up and managed to complete a few, but Nintendo games always seemed so much harder and often cryptic that my young mind just didnt understand many of Nintendos offerings. This channel is really letting me enjoy many old titles I knew of already and some Ive never heard of. Your knolledege is amazing. Thanks for all your hard work.
I'm coming in on this a little late, I know, but I just wanted to express how glad I am to see that I wasn't the only one who had trouble playing this back in the day. Yes, it really is a good game, just big, complex and confusing, especially if you're just starting out with it. Seriously, how was a kid in the 1980s with no internet supposed figure this out, unless they were able to get their hands on a really good strategy guide, although I don't think one ever existed for this game. That's where folks like you come in handy. After watching this video I now have an idea what I'm supposed to do, so maybe now I can finally finish it. I guess I'll find out...
I'm 10 seconds into this vid and I had to like. Looking at the length I know I'm in for a good ride. This game was brutal to play as a kid. No way I would have been able to beat it back then and I just dont have the patience to do it now. So once again thanks for effort on these. Keep up the great work!
It's the one game I use to see on shelves at the rental stores, back in the 80s, and always passed it up, I wish I hadn't. But hey that's the beauty of playing later in life.
I definitely didn't have the manual because I was playing it in the 2000s, so I was absolutely was perplexed with this game as a kid but still loved it.
I think this is my favorite video of yours. I played this game for hours and had no idea what to do. I always went with Roas not realizing how weak he was haha.
I was already primed to hit subscribe after I watched your Shadow Gate videos, but when I saw that you had a full guide for THIS GAME, one of my all-time favorites, I realized that you were my brother from another mother. I smashed the hell outta that Subscribe button. You rock, dude. Love your content. Keep it up.
As always, excellent video, really getting into all the details. Thank you for putting in the time to bring this to the masses. Just like Crystalis, this is another underrated classic; a huge world to explore, excellent music, mind-bending problems to solve; and crushing NES difficulty.
I never got far on this one cuz I was like 9 years old and couldn't figure it out. It does seem to be a pretty cool game. These are some intricate puzzles that I never had the patience for as a kid. It is really cool to now, after all these years to see how the game is done. I admire that you had the patience to stick with them until you beat them. My requests: Solstice Fester's Quest Bayou Billy If you can make these games look as easy as this I will be amazed. I am sure I have many more than these, but even if you don't get to these I am very grateful for your channel and really enjoying your videos.
I have been watching some of your other videos, and I thought, what’s a game I’d like to watch a video on, and this is what popped into my head. Nowhere near enough love for this game on TH-cam
I can’t remember how. But somehow, I beat this game when I was a kid. And seeing that original manual reminded me of how I finally figured it out that they had special powers to use in certain spots.
This game terrorized me as a child! The only boss I ever made it to was with Lil. Or however it's spelled. The girl that jumps really high. You make this look so easy. Ha ha I'm hooked on your NES videos. I've been binge watching them. Great job. I hope you keep them coming!
I remember getting this game from the rental store as a teen. I had it for a good couple of weeks. It didn't have a manual, and I remember trying to map areas out on graph paper. What a game. Never did finish it, as I had to return it and didn't get lot's of time to game everyday. Really was fun and kept me entertained.
I remember playing this off and on as a kid, but I definitely didn't understand what I was supposed to be doing. This compounded with not having a guide or manual to work with.
As a child, I always thought this game was just shallow or broken. No passwords, no saves, items dont really seem to do anything, been on every screen possible and can't do anything else, etc. I wasn't bad at games, either. I had long since cleared both Zelda quests. If you hide a deep game behind the facade of a broken/simple one, and the vast majority of players don't find it, did you really make a deep game? I don't know.... I don't think this game belongs on any top lists. It's cryptic more like Super Pitfall, not like Milon's Secret Castle. LotW has lots of techniques that, at best, blur the line between bug and feature.
This game always captivated me as a kid. It always looks so claustrophobic with all the disappearing tiles and hidden paths. I never knew about where to go and never heard of the debug code at the end of the video! Great job man!
Man! I loved playing this game as a kid! Legacy of the Wizard, The Guardian Legend, Battle of Olympus, all great NES games! Great video!!! Maybe do The Guardian Legend next?
So I played this before I had internet. You could usually tell when you were on the right path because of puzzles and overall difficulty of progression. When, suddenly, the path dead-ended you would attack, walk and press into, jump against, glove and mattock every block out of desperation.
This is such an amazing story thanks for sharing I was wondering did y’all both have a copy of the game?

@@youtubechannel4792 We did! We played the game at the same time, and shared passwords with each other as we made progress together.
Awesome story!
Everyone remembers this game's difficulty, but lets acknowledge the top tier soundtrack. Some of the best music to ever grace the NES system.
Especially this remix!

I agree, I already remade some of them and can't wait to finish the whole soundtrack, this music is absolutely beautiful
By far my favorite NES soundtrack, maybe only surpassed by mega man 2
Very possibly the best Credits Roll BGM of the NES Era...

i didnt even know there was an actual goal, i thought i was just supposed to run around murdering monsters till i got bored.
💯❤
Thank you for playing.
I grew up during this era and I still don't understand how anyone was ever supposed to figure any of this out lol. Good stuff
Also: Looking forward to when you release a video for Milon's Secret Castle
You figure it out by reading the guide that came it’s the game and playing it.....
@@judethaddeus9856 What guide? The only thing it came with was the instruction manual. And the only thing in the instruction manual is a description of the items, and how to move the blocks with the glove.
"The hardest part of the game is the area you have to move blocks to solve puzzles."
Even the manual writer realized the control design for block moving was atrocious.
@@dorpth thats where i got stuck with a walkthrough in like 2000
I completed this game in exactly one month using only the instruction manual.
This is one of my all time favorite games but I've never once gotten close to beating it!!! Awesome video bro!!! 💯
Thanks man!
Now it’s time for you to beat it 👍
A very well done walkthrough.
Thank you.
Thanks! I didn't know that about fall damage!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames You're more than welcome. I'm going to check out another of your walkthroughs now.
Awesome!!
One of my favorites . Love this game. Spent a whole summer figuring this game out when i was around 8 or so so 92 or so. Criminally underrated gem.
I had so much fun getting lost in this one. For my first playthrough, I only used the instruction manual. I struggled a bit on the later bosses because I'd have never found the shield, but I had a blast uncovering the game's secrets!
This game actually looks legit- can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before
Well you've heard of my face ! Why not!?
It is. I had it when I was younger and understood nothing, but i replayed it in 2011 with a LPr Deceased Crab as a guide and have played it at least 1x a year since.
*Really feels like a Metroidvania in addition to being an early one
@@timmyp6297 Face Police! You're under arrest
The soundtrack for this game is great!
Brother, you and the pups have come through for me again. The walkthrough of Xemn's section and the routing you suggest finally got me an original hardware clear. (Did have to adjust a tiny bit at the end due to some region differences, but for there.)
Thomas, buddy, wherever you are, we finally got it.
Yep for me too, as even thought on doing Pochi's area with Xemn years ago, the roadblock of how to deal with the chest mimics eluded me until this video.
While that's great design on the part of the game creators, it's kind of lame how if you don't scramble past the monster to the hidden path straightaway (by going to the left for instance) touching the monster again even with the armor will kill you regardless.
i love when he paws or nudges the cartridge when you pick it up... he's so adorkable that mr. baratheon
😁 He's a really good boy
Such a gem.
I loved this game as a kid. The music alone was enough to keep me coming back.
Thanks! I really hope more people get to discover this awesome game!
Fantastic game! I beat it in the 80’s!! Absolutely one of my favorites for sure. Definitely underrated! It was one big graph paper map!
Dude you actually beat this game as a kid? Holy shit.
it took forever, but there's a code system in the game that lets you kinda have a save system. I remember the codes being super long and when you're a kid you have sloppy hand writing so I'd have these barely legible codes that I'd have to decipher@@KingofCrusher
I would love to see a video about Faxanadu
Seconded! Faxanadu walkthrough vote #2 here! :)

🤣🤣🤣 Thanks, Addison!
LOL!

This was by Broderbund, the same company that made another NES game that was notorious. Is it possible to beat Deadly Towers? Maybe U Can Beat Video Games would make a video of that game sometime?
You just woke up a hidden part of my brain I had forgotten about.
I like that!
I had this game as a kid. It probably took me the longest time to figure out how to beat it among all of my NES games (again, no internet in the late 80's).
This game made my 6 year old brain at the time feel like it was made out of strawberry preserves
Well, a 6 year old CHILD is not supposed to understand higher order thinking...
@@judethaddeus9856 wow thanks Jude, thanks for coming out tonight, you've been fun
@@judethaddeus9856 There are six year olds that can code. Wtf you talking about?
"Pause the game to avoid fall damage" "Attack the Inn and it will turn into a shop" OH SURE, why didn't I expect that.
Yeah I had one buddy who beat this game, but I was just baffled by it. I kept thinking you were supposed to play the game with the character you LIKE, as if it was Final Fantasy or Mario2.
Same. I HAD NO IDEA what to do. Never even made it to one boss.
it was in my top 5 for sure. it was pretty confusing as a kid, but that just made me want to beat it more.
I remember playing this game as a kid.
Pichai was my favorite character.
Didn't have the book, so I never really understood the game.
But it was fun.
Yeah, this one is fun just to wander around and explore!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I did a Ton of that, bought most of the gear, killed a ton of enemies, and had no clue what I was supposed to be doing... but it was fun trying to figure things out. LOL Not sure if I ever got any crowns, been a long time now
Thanks for giving it it's backstory, this is one of my favorite games when I was a kid. You rock man.
I 100% agree at how under rated this game is. This was the only NES game I was any good at. Makes me sad when I mention it and nobody has ever heard of it.
The ONLY way I was able to make progress in this game was to use the game genie, so much I didn't understand not having the booklet. This was fascinating!
Glad you enjoyed it! I definitely want to spread the word about this game, its way better than most people think.
No joke I’ve been trying to remember this game since me and a friend played it as kids. Almost 30 years ago? I can’t thank you enough for this video
🤣 Totally like moses
Just found your videos..
I remember playing this game with my mom, when it first came out. We never got too far in it but sure enjoyed trying! I wish she was still with us to have seen your video. Thank you for this, my friend!
Thanks, Aaron! What a cool experience to have shared with your mom.
Can't wait to watch your other videos! Crystalis anyone?
I think this was the first UCBVG video I watched. I come back to it every once in a while for the excellent playthrough and commentary.
You’ve got something special here, UCBVG. I’m glad you’re now at 100 games and counting.
Never seen this before. Solomon's Key meets Zelda, featuring Milon's Secret Castle. Nice.
This game is so difficult that even after watching your video tutorial I’m still lost
Just kidding I really appreciate you taking the time to do this Epic Playthrough 😎👍
This game is MASSIVE! Thanks, Jason!
I agree, I bet playing this game on a play through for the first time must be overwhelming

Save states are probably really helpful for practicing the late game bosses. It's very demoralizing to finish a big section and die on the boss.
One of my favorite games when growing up. Lots of replay value.
I would never have figured out how to beat this when I was a kid
I'm sure I wouldnt have, either!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I had no idea what I was doing, I don't even think I realized there were false bricks
Youve heard the term '' Nintendo Hard ''?? Agreed - Even as an adult without this guide, this game would still be completely confusing.
I actually finished this game thanks to this guide! What an awesome ride it was. Keep up the good work!
This game is def a hidden gem, and I can't believe the youtube algorithm blessed me with your hidden gem channel... seriously, good job!
Bit late to be commenting on this old video, but just a couple tips and tricks that it missed which might come in handy for others playing the game:
You can cross over spikes without taking damage quite easily by just holding up on the D-pad while walking over them.
I’ve been trying to remember the name of this game for like 20 years!!! Thanks
This game is awesome - underrated for sure!
I loved this game. Yes, you are absolutely coorect. This is game is awesome. Thank you for doing tbis video and bringing it back to my life. I find it to play it again. And with your help, it should be a breeze. Great work, keep doing what you are doing.
Thanks, Julio! More people need to know about this one!
How is Astyanax? I've wondered about that game.
Played this as a kid w/ no manual. It was hard then. Not to mention possibilities of getting stuck. Props for making the video!
I haven’t played this in probably nearly 30 years, it’s so cool to see it again
Thanks, Jamie!
Ultima exodus might be a good one to do, if you're still shopping ideas
That's a good one, thanks, Joshua!
I remember my family and i would play this for hours. We finally figured it out and beat it. Great memories.

Ha ha
I'm hooked on your NES videos.
This is definitely one that you might want to keep extra long as a rental. Very cool game
I remember playing this off and on as a kid, but I definitely didn't understand what I was supposed to be doing. This compounded with not having a guide or manual to work with.
I used to love this game!! So many different things you can do and the music was awesome!! It was right up there with FF1 for me!
This game is so under rated - I hope that people watching the channel who haven't tried it will give it a chance!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames You should do Castle Quest next, it's a good game and similar
I loved this game so much. I'm so glad I found this. IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THE TITLE FOR LIKE 5 YEARS LOL

Omg I was stuck at 25:00 your “jump left” was so helpful and cute!
This game always captivated me as a kid. It always looks so claustrophobic with all the disappearing tiles and hidden paths. I never knew about where to go and never heard of the debug code at the end of the video! Great job man!
Thanks!! This game is has a lot of cool stuff going on. I think its sad that so few people know about it.
Man! I loved playing this game as a kid! Legacy of the Wizard, The Guardian Legend, Battle of Olympus, all great NES games! Great video!!! Maybe do The Guardian Legend next?
