The 2006 K2 Disaster

  • K2, the second highest peak on the planet, is infamous for its difficulty and its deadliness. Sporting a notably high mortality rate, K2, has rightfully earned it's unofficial moniker of 'The Savage Mountain' and a great number of climbers have lost their lives attempting to ascend K2 throughout the years. Perhaps the most well known deaths on K2's slopes took place in 2008, however much lesser widely known is that an eerily similar incident to the 2008 disaster would claim several lives two years prior in the year 2006.

Very nice to hear you give a comprehensive description of degrees of difficulty of mountains. Very nice. I watched a video of a couple who climbed K2 in good weather and made it all look easy. In contrast, I watched a video of a couple of guys climbing Trango Towers ... nailing a pup tent to a vertical wall to spend the night in! Nothing under that tent but a thousand meters of air! Edit: compared to some of the really hard climbs, "House's Chimney" and the "Hillary Step" are nothing but easy, ladders and ropes already there - no elevators yet, but give them time ....

Oh man, you released this video less than 2 minutes after I got off the computer to go sleep a bit... about the difficulty part, a whole bunch of people who have no idea about the subject, both the video makers + the audience, still insist that K2 is the most difficult mountain in the world. I mean, yeah, it surely is not for anyone slightly faint of heart or even advanced, it's only for hardcore climbers, but still, it's FAR from being the most difficult, it's actually annoying because it's false info, as people will believe in something that is not really the whole picture or truth.
As for the story... that part of K2 is scary as fukc dude, that HUGE ice wall is just so eerie. This shows once again that you can take all possible safety precautions, but nature just doesn't care and doesn't respect anyone. Imagine you're climbing a mountain this tall and out of nowhere you are faced by a storm lasting almost 2 weeks! I can't imagine being in that situation, the force of the winds up in these mountains is just surreal, along with the whiteout conditions and the brutal low temperatures even in the summer months.
Imagine the level of boredom being unable to do anything and keep your mind busy for almost 2 weeks in complete isolation... jesus, that is just maddening, just being able to sleep in that situation is a feat of itself because of the super loud sounds of the winds outside colliding with the tents. I've been in situations of very high winds while camping in tents and let me tell you, it's anything but a pleasant situation, that constant super loud sounds will just eventually drive most people mad.

11 days in one spot? Wow. I'd imagine that by then you're pretty low on food and fuel to melt snow for water. Just being there that long puts any attempt in the "nope" category. You don't have enough food to eat to get enough energy to make the trek up to the peak, back down, and to a lower camp with more food. There really should be limits to how long you can spend at the different sites without making a push. They should've been required to come down instead of pushing for the peak, especially since the length of the storm INCREASED the likelihood of an avalanche anyway.

You need a metronome as your cadence is so inconsistent and constantly changing. Your holds and pauses are awkward and things feel to be taking too long for you to be saying what you could say due to your intentional changing of cadence and tone.
