    People on an 01 v6 you have to use an 18 mm socket, put it on the tension pulley bolt and use a pipe or breaker bar on the end, then push it counter clockwise to release tension on the belt. This video was very helpful on changing the alternator, but very confusing on that part.

    • @lastmoto777
      @lastmoto777  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, its hard to get a camera down there for a good view. There is a 3/8 square hole in the casting, but you can use the ratchet as well. anyway, good luck with it !

    Thanks for posting this vid. It was exactly what I needed to help replace my alternator. I especially appreciated your comments on how to unplug the electrical connection plug with a small flathead screwdriver to push the tab out. I also used your tip to get a pry bar to help ease out the old Alternator. Installation was just like the rest of your vid. Awesome!

    I had to replace my alternator on my 02 V6 also. So I needed to release the tension on the serpentine belt. So I searched all over, specifically using the term "2002 V6 Mustang" and I kept finding people saying to stick the square end of a ratchet, into the base of the belt tension bracket. The problem was, nobody could agree as to what size ratchet. Most would say a 3/8", but I also found some saying to use a 1/2", and even others said use 1/4" ratchet. The truth is, all these people must be referring to a GT V8. I assume (by majority) in that instance, a 3/8" would be the correct wrench, but in the V6, it is totally different. That hole, in the center of the tensioner bracket base, in a 02 V6, is actually a 5/16" HEX. I was able to perfectly fit a 5/16" allen key into it, but you CANNOT use it to release the tension on the belt. IT WILL NOT WORK on an 02 V6.

    Instead of using a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive to release the tension, there is a tension bolt there which is much easier to get that belt off. Video is very helpful though, just changed my alternator yesterday thanks to this vid. But I ended up chipping that slot for the drive and ended up finding that tension bolt.

    • @RobThunder42
      @RobThunder42 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I would've read your comment earlier. I did the EXACT same thing and chipped out some of the metal in the tensioner arm. Using the "bolt" to release tension is around 9 to 10 times easier.

    • @TheBornalliance
      @TheBornalliance 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RobThunder42 where is the tension bolt at?

    • @RobThunder42
      @RobThunder42 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      FourTwentyKings at 0:36 it is that large bolt at the bottom and again, around 0:40 bottom right to wear he starts to zoom in on the spot where you actually want to avoid using.

  • @pallidmors
    @pallidmors 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    We just did a 3.9 2004 Mustang and the only way we could loosen the tensioner was to use a bottle jack. We put a 9/16 socket on the bolt on the belt wheel and then put a wrench under that down to the jack. The wrench was solid under the socket and sat on the top of the jack well. We used a wrench but a flat bar would work too.

    • @pallidmors
      @pallidmors 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For clarification, we had to use the wrench so we wouldn't have to disconnect the fluid line (the bottle jack was too fat).

I had my power steering and rib belt replace and its whining worse than before, i think i've located the noise to the alternator, also the power steering is making noise.. could it be caused by the bad alternator? also does the alternator make a whine like power steering when going out?

    I cannot find the square rounded hold that you used to loosen the tension on the belt

  • @leod6153
    @leod6153 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    TO LOOSEN THE BELT--> The thing he zooms in on at 00:36 didn't work for me. I used an 18 inch socket for the V6 2001 Mustang on the black thing just under the hole he zooms up on.
    Put it on the lower bolt thing, turn it COUNTER Clockwise (left loose). You should see it move like a yoyo upwards to release the tension.
    Hope that helps. I'm not a professional, so please excuse my jargon!

    • @lastmoto777
      @lastmoto777  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah theres a couple of ways to loosen the tensioner arm.
      You can also put a socket on the bolt that holds the pulley to the tensioner arm and turn it counterclockwise to relieve tension.
      Just be careful to not loosen the bolt by accident when releasing tension from the arm.

    Any one experience two different part numbers of alternators for this car? OEM alternators appear to be the only ones that work, after market alternators could have a different wiring set up. Something is going on that a new after market alternator is charging is charging 18 volts +.

    • @lastmoto777
      @lastmoto777  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its part of the wiring harness . You can follow the damaged wires and just replace them. You will have to cut some of the wrap on your harness. You can also cut off the damaged portion of the wire and splice a new piece of wire on with appropriate connector and splice connector. If it is something you can remove take it to a dealer if you want new or a salvage yard ( much cheaper) if you can find one available. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Best of luck with it

    i have a question. does the 99 v6 have the same bolts for the alternator as the 04 cause i know it has 1 nore plug on my 99 next to the first one you pulled off the alternator...

    • @lastmoto777
      @lastmoto777  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure about yours because all of the mustangs 3.8L, 3.9L & 5.0L all use the same alternator that I have. You must have a different alternator. I would take a picture of the plugs with your phone before buying one so that you will be sure to have the correct replacement. The procedure to replace it will be the same ,There will just be one more plug to deal with. Good luck with that.

    my car been not cracking up lately, today I try to get a jump, the alternator started to smoke. I finally got it to crank up I started to drive but once I got at a red light it cut off, Is it an alternator I need? and I never worked on a car before but should I try putting on the Alternator myself, I have the same car.

    • @lastmoto777
      @lastmoto777  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you take it off you can take it to like a autozone , pep boys, advance auto parts, or any big car parts store and they can test it for you. They do it for free. Its probably bad if it was smoking. But have it tested first because alternators are expensive. You dont want to replace it unless you know for sure its bad. You might as well get your battery tested while your at it in case it has a short. Anyway good luck with it.

  • @izbo10
    @izbo10 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks most was helpful but on my 2000 ford mustang your method of loosening the belt failed, you need to find the right wrench for the pulley and pull up on the pulley, turning that hole will just result in a blown out back.

    • @lastmoto777
      @lastmoto777  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never broken one of these castings, but I know it does happen sometimes. Yeah theres a couple of other ways to loosen the tensioner arm. You can put a socket or wrench on the bolt that holds the pulley to the tensioner arm and turn it counterclockwise to relieve tension.
      Just be careful to not loosen the bolt by accident when releasing tension from the arm. anyway glad you got it.

      +lastmoto777 yeah im not much of a car person but this video made me able to save 200 on labor by giving me the confidence i could do it, just found that putting an 18 mm on the bolt on the tensioner and merely pulling up got the belt off, no matter how i tried the 3/8 drive in the square nothing moved and the belt stayed tight.

    • @lastmoto777

      @lastmoto777  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should be the same. With any car you just need to untension your tensioner pulley , remove belt , remove wires , and remove the alternator. Good luck with that.

      +izbo10 yeah lol his instructions on that part suck. my buddy who has a 98 told me to do it that way and that works better. you pull up on the tensioner by slipping a 19mm on the bolt on the pulley and pull up on that...

      Linda you can just use the bolt that's attached to the pulley on that arm. Use a socket or wrench or whatever you can fit in there. That will work just as well. Best of luck with it.
