Marching Pioneer '93 was my first year in DCI/DCM, so likewise, I saw a lot of Star that Summer. That show was a paradigm shift for what was to come in DCI. But as they say, whoever leads the charge always gets bloody. Star got a lot of love and a lot of hate for that show from other corps, judges and fans. "Color guards can't just use sticks... Drumlines can't play their feature at 'mf' volume... You can just stand there and move your arms and legs and call that 'drill'..." Love it or hate it, that show was way ahead of its time and was performed at an extremely high level.

Star fans want to paint this picture of a pack of brilliant rebels in Star 93. But design wise, this show fell short. Star's '93 show was meaningless, thematically. Why perform the classic Greek tragedy Medea? The woman kills her children as an act of revenge against her husband. Is that suited to these performers? Is the juvenile nose thumbing at the judges' scores from the previous year an appropriate thing to teach young performers about the world and how to handle criticism? No, of course not. True performing artists believe in a broader message and aren't swayed by critics.
      AUTHENTICITY - ZERO
Is the medium of the marching arts the right medium for dramatizing this Greek tragedy? Are marital abuse and infanticide great subject matters for kids who are under 21? Of course not. It's a completely inauthentic choice. This Greek tragedy had nothing to do with these performers other than their being brainwashed into believing that they should kill their baby "Star" to exact revenge on the previous year's judges, and then quit the activity. Other than that, the subject matter has little or nothing to do with these performers.
      COHESION
If you're telling the story of Medea, or alluding to it, you have some obligation to the depict the story visually, or at least allude to some aspect of the play. Throw the audience a bone and let them know what the dramatic action is. Show us how two sticks relate to the story, for example. Show us how the changes in mood and the progression of the story are supported by the equipment, choreography and drill sets. Show us how the dramatic action changes by the end of the show. How is the angry ending different from the angry beginning? What's the symbolism in the flag design? How are the drill sets evocative of the Greek tragedy and how it resolves?
      EMOTION
Anger is an essential emotion in any drama, Greek or contenporary . But twelve minutes of anger is a a cry for help. Worse no one wants to pay $40 to see twelve minutes of performer's sour grapes over unfair scoring from the previous year. That's puerile.
Instead of portraying the emotional range of the original story , this disgruntled design team created twelve minutes of cacophonous rage. If you're going to perform a Greek tragedy in twelve minutes, which is never recommended, you must refer to some aspect of the drama-- the lead character, allude to symbolism using the elements in the show-- color, costume, dance, shape, dialogue (music), pattern, shape and line. In this show, we see no variance in mood or emotion. It's the same rage throughout. Drum corps audiences love to stand up and cheer. It's an upbeat, youthful activity for young adults-- what to play next? The theme from Schindler's List? Oy vey, too heavy!
      UNIVERSALITY
Medea is the darkest of dark Greek tragedy about a woman taking a stand against male domination. That's a universal message that could resonate with audiences, but you must start with the likeability of the lead character, and her menacing husband. The designers are obligated in some way to allude to or evoke first the innocence, the abuse and then the angry retribution. But these designers had difficulty visually conveying this story, or any kind of pattern that illuminated the concept of unfair treatment and the ultimate revenge. Instead, the audience just watches the show scratching their collective had asking "When do I clap? When she kills the kids?"
      UNIQUENESS
Sure, it was unusual for a corps to play twelve minutes of tedious anger, and to do a minimalist approach to a marching arts show, removing color, range of emotion, range of tone and dressing all in black. But, let's be honest. The black leotards are reminiscent of 1960's black box theaters where abstract premises looked so fresh. (30 years later, to still be wearing black leotards in an abstract, minimalist production, not so original.) .
The only reason why this show should be called a "game changer" is maybe because it's the first time in DCI history that an entire show was designed to be an angry nose-thumbing at the DCI judges and their score from the previous year-- a completely immature and laughable venture. Why not focus on the dramatic action of this incredibly powerful Greek tragedy, instead?

Listen to the sound impact and the response of the audience from years ago. There are always some exceptional performances. The difference between now and 35-40 years ago is the impact the performance has on the audience. In 2017, I took my daughter to her 1st DCI competition, and my 1st since the late '80's. After many well performed, but ho-hum shows,I told her to get ready for 3 standing ovation performances from the final 6 corps. We were both sorely disappointed. Don't substitute fluff for substance, If you can add visuals without taking away from the actual Drum and Bugle Corp performance, fantastic. But audience response tells the story. Today's players are extremely talented people. Absolutely no disrespect meant towards them. The shows need to be redirected back to the audience, not the judges The judges need to accept that and base GE on audience perception, not theirs What is better for the long term growth of DCI, attracting a dozen more possible judges for the next year or 1,000 more fans loving the impact of the shows?

YUP! Even as a new-generation DCI fan, I agree wholeheartedly. I'm tired of seeing the top 5 consist of the "best" (*COUGH* BD *COUGH*), albeit I have to make an exception for the Bluecoats, but even then, I'm not always happy with what they bring. As I said on another comment, despite being a newer World Class corps and not the top 12, Music City got a LOT of cheers and standing ovations this last season, when I was at the "home" show in Murfreesboro. Even during the performance. I attribute that mainly to being a show that everyone could love, even those that aren't into other corps except their one and only. MCDC is now getting a larger fanbase, mostly with moving from Open Class to World Class for the 2018 season, but also because their shows are enjoyable.

1049berkeley: 93 Star's design was ground breaking, but 93 Cadets had a far more demanding and better executed show at finals. Star's GE and music were killer, but their marching execution was somewhat poor at finals. Repeated spacing and form errors at finals, especially in Medea. Whereas Cadets ran 200 + bpm nearly their entire show (not just the last 3 minutes) and were clean, clean, clean beginning to end. One of the best marching performances ever, and one of the hardest drills ever. Cadets' brass was nearly as good as Star and Cadets' percussion and guard were better (Cadets' percussion got dumped at finals...won quarters and semis but somehow lost finals?). To this day 93 Cadets is one of the most demanding and best executed shows ever to hit the field. And that takes nothing away from Star. Star 93 is and always will be legendary. But they were properly in 2nd place at finals, and were lucky to have only been .01 behind. That's the problem with judging art...scores don't always equate to impact on the activity. For example, 1980 SCV and 2014 Bluecoats.

IMHO, the build-up to, and the angled company front (0:40) from '88 SCV still gives me chills, and it's 2018 !!! No offense Madison, I thought SCV was better(just an opinion)
Bluecoats, "Tilt"... A groundbreaking concept, awesome modern show. So much emotion in this show and they DEFINITELY peaked at the right moment !!! (IMHO, they should've won) I can't stop watching the ending... (11:54) very cool. BLOOOOOOOOOO !!!

  • @chrishickie8600

I wholeheartedly agree with four of those pics only one I don't agree with is the Crossmen. There were so many other moments that could have been chosen for that slot such as Blue Devils 1996 or Phantom Regiment 1996 as examples. That is the beauty of drum corps is what is breathtaking to you may mean something vastly different to somebody else but there are definitive moments that everybody just kind of stops and looks at one another and understands there watching greatness. Those moments have unfortunately in my opinion become fewer and fewer as the years progressed you want electronics have been introduced into the sport but absolutely for me one of those moments was the end of that Bluecoats show. I remember the first time that I saw that show and I was just blown away at the quality of musicianship and more so utter command that the kids had of that show.

    • @TNG173
      @TNG173  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I thank you for your comment. I simply appreciate Crossmen 2012 as a trumpet player myself, and the outstanding range by the soloist.
I made a second moments video, and had seriously considered 96' Phantom, but ended up not including it just yet.
And I wholeheartedly agree, Tilt's closer was breathtaking.
As a younger DCI fan and marcher, I have been exposed to more modern DCI, hence my appreciation for the newer shows.

A Getzen/DEG/Dynasty baritone (2-valve, too); the euphoniums were fatter (the bell and outer bows were more like a standard concert euph). I don't see a good closeup on a euph in this video to help show the difference. There's a decent shot at the end of the '87 SCV Finals video (th-cam.com/video/W_2FIRs8F7U/w-d-xo.htmlm46s ), and Scouts '88 had a bari-euph duet for the mini-ballad before Malaguena.

Speaking as an individual who marched 2012 Crossmen, the opener and breaking back into finals were the only reasons why its remembered so profoundly. The fact that our screamer (and my section leader) could be heard over the drum corps without a mic was pretty insane considering how every soloist these days has a mic. The rest of the show is pretty meh in comparison though haha. It was a great rookie year all said and done.
