Still waiting for you to cover that Casio voice synth..... i knew what it was destined to be as soon as i saw it, and when i tried it i wasn't disappointed!
I was just about to board a plane to fly to Vienna to buy a Colossus at Klangfarbe, but now the trip is off. LMK when they have Mao-sized posters of Florian everywhere.
@@jamesmcn0000 We should all arrange a trip together and march through the store carrying Florian banners. "We are seizing the means of Roland reproduction!"
You know, I like my RD6 because you can open it, swap some components out, drill some holes into the chassis, screw some pots in there and you frankensteiner yourself a bastard somewhere between a 606 and a 909 depending on your soldering skills and how far you're willing to go.
And if you brick it in the process, you're only out $140 (assuming you bought a new one), not a GREAT deal but not so terrifying as something more costly...
The 606 hats are my favorite sounding of the x0x line. I was compelled to buy a TR-06 to go with my TB-03. Back in mid 90s, I bought an original 606 from a pawn shop that had it labelled "effects pedal" for $75. Sold it a couple years later for $150 and felt like I'd done really well.
I think pairing the TR 06 with a TB 03 is why they made the 06 boutique in the first place. I was an owner of the original with a story very similar to yours. I sold mine for $300 in 1999 once I bought a TR 808 for $1000
“Uli’s little rainbow of horrors” may have been a low blow lol 😂😂😂😂 Hearing it in action with your programming is another real piece of ear candy! 🎉💯🎯🤯🎊🔥
The OG 606 can do driving hihat-snare-mayhem like no other. There's something about how it distorts sounds when cranking up the volume, and the open and closed hihat interact funkily. OH+CH combined on same step is a different sound than either soloed, and the OH decay seems to be tied to the tempo.
Don't forget that the tempo knob adjusts OH decay when the 606 is synced to another clock! That might be why the decay time is linked to the tempo when it is the master🤔
😂perfect timing, I put this up for sell on my offer up about three days ago, nothing better than your advertisement, I shall edit my post to "as seen on bad gear, firm price, no trades, cash only". Finale breakbeat was impeccable.
I'd say that ripoff at the end was quite convincing! It really does sound great in a mix. Might not stand out, but it gets the job done. The addition of the probability thing is cool too
I almost bought a 606 back in the day when they were cheap. but it didn’t have MIDI so I got a Juno-106 from the same guy instead and stuck with my unglamorous SR-16. No regrets. Now I have a RD-6 and I have to say, it sounds fine but the separate outputs are really rad. You can get into true RDJ territory the way he used to actually do it with different delay units.
I actually love the TR-06 I got the RD-6 and fell in love with the 606, I saw a really good deal on the TR06 and bought it If it was analog many would be seeing it as a great modern upgrade for the TR 606. The fact you can tweak the sounds (something you can’t do on the original 606) is awesome
I gotta blue Uli Horror for my Big Black fix. It was like 89$ or something lol. It's actually great to layer over other drums, and of course those hats are a classic.
I once borrowed a TR-606 from a friend of mine, and I actually shed a tear when I had to return it. There's something quite fun about those short, doinky sounds. Of course I sampled the heck out of it beforehand, so it's all good. Mostly.
I'll stick with the little Rainbow of Horrors! I have the most obnoxious of colors - Lime Green! I used to have the original when it first came out, and it had a booklet of beats you could program into it. I wonder if anyone still has 1 of those books. I can still hear 1 of those beats in my head as I type this. As usual, thanks for the great music, and i do like that ratchet function, which you showcase nicely!
I ♡♡♡♡♡ my TR-06! The nuances in tones and programming, with the tunings, alternate sounds and the OH/CH combinations, plus the velocity/level controls, substep and probability functions are far ahead of the other (gorgeous) drum boxes in the Boutique range. An underrated classic. And, yes, I ♡♡♡♡♡ the Boutique range. Sue me! 😁👌 #theboutiquerangesavedmylife
I own over a dozen drum machines but my all time favorite is the Roland TR-06. If you tweak all the instruments perfect the TR-06 sounds better than any other drum machine on this planet. And I don't know of any other drum machine that would be better in terms of triggering and syncing. But ultimately it's all a question of taste.
The cool thing about the OG 606 was you could go back and forth between play and record without stopping the machine. Other than the kick, I'm a fan of the sounds, esp the hi hats. Big Black used it well back in the day.
I actually rather like my TR-06. Once you use the menu to alter the sounds to how you want them to be it sounds pretty good. Also the trigger outputs mean you can use it to power Eurorack drum modules ( I have some TR-808, TR-909 clones), or my Korg Drum, Korg SQ-1 and other modular machines.
Yes the RD6 have a good price. But the boutique version has delay.. reverb..bit crusher..that RD6 don't has. And the 909 snare and toms too. Isn't bad.. probably to buy used to lower the price.😀
Personally I love the 606. Its sound oozes electricity compared to the 808 and 909. The machine on its own might not be applicable to every electronic genre, but with some good processing and wise sound selection from its x0x brothers, it will stand its ground in an arrangement.
A few months ago I've asked myself the same question, but went "meh, let's try it anyway" since the price of one perricular second-hand TR-06 unit was very tempting. Since then it's absolutely my favourite piece of gear that is especially wonderful as a live/jam situation drum machine. And yeah, it's still a Bad Gear and still has many things that make Boutiques a laughing stock of a series, but this is the rare case when Roland got the "chasing a ghost" homework done at least for A-. Salutations and respect, Florian!
The s-1 outshining the tr in that first jam, not that the drums were bad or anything, but goddamn what a sound for a digital acid patch. Love the Roland filters and reso!!!
This was an on point review for sure! I had this one and it made me feel like I did when I got my first drum machine in 1989 lol. It worked ok in a mix and I didn’t put it down for two months. Set up was, the TR-06, TB-3, and Volca Keys. Actually it was a great set up but I got the TR-08 for $549 on Blacl Friday 2022 and was happy to sell the TR-06.
Apart from your humor, intelligence and obvious good looks, it's mostly your programming and mixing that blows me away! I don't make music like this. But if I did I'd want to do it like Sir Pilz!
🤣He who must not be named 😅 That‘s really spot on. 🤩👍 Like if Florian was his twin spirit. 🤔🫥 The visuals are so great. If it wasn’t before 9 a.m. I‘d ordered the TR-06 right away 😳 But promised myself: no more night buying. Great episode.
Got one of these before I got the Behringer RD-9. It's not bad, definitely usable, especially with the alternative sounds (the 909 style kick is a big improvement over the default) although I found that qhen you mess about with the 'OUT' parameter you can improve the output without having to resort to USB.
I live in Hollywood. Thanks to this channel there are only three places where you can get gear. Sweetwater, Guitar Center and Klangfarbe! :) Someday I will show up there in person.
I always liked the 606's hats for some reason, they sound more crispy than the muted 808 or raspy like the 909. But one thing I can agree on, you can never go wrong with more cowbell.
Great demo as always! I think I own this device but I'm not quite sure; It's never been set up in my rig so it's got to be lying somewhere in the storage. That explains my fondest love for the TR06.🎉
I have one of Ulis colourful ones, and I agree that it's not very useful if it's the only drummachine in a mix but blends well in as a percussion instrument :)
It’s such a reliable piece of equipment… I’ve used it in almost all my sets since 2022 and it never once screamed or coughed up random demon sounds at me, the thing is built like a tank and it sounds like the inside of a maersk container
I feel like the TR-6S is a solid bet if you're after classic Roland sounds with a more modern sequencer. Probability, substeps and substep probability, motion sequencing, variations and fills for longer sequences. Probably the only thing that sucks is the amount of menu diving, and maybe...I would consider going up to the 8S one day just for a little more hands on control and separate outs. But yeah for the money I think the 6S is great, and I'd take that any day over buying every boutique drum machine they have or will put out.
Florian, what an amazing Finale Tune and video!! I enjoyed it with tears of happiness running down my boomers face! (literarisch natürlich) Want it as an one our loop video so much! ✌💛👍
I love my TR-06, got it for $220 basically brand new. Plays well with my Neutron, and it sounds great! Audio over USB does suck like you said, but if you’re wanting to record only 4-8 bars at a time then usually you can get by without much issue, but I prefer to just tempo sync over usb and record thru my audio interface. The mix in is awesome to use if you’re wanting to use it like a basic effects unit too. I don’t have a large setup, so it’s a nice versatile box. With all that said though I’d like to get an RD-6 one day too, just cause lol
This 606 remake rode the coat tails of the continuing TB-303 revival and I am guessing that the thinking was that these two products were initially introduced together in Roland ads. I got the TR-08 boutique for depth, but perhaps should have purchased the TR-09 since that was the boutique model that was discontinued first. Although lacking the 808 boom, this is a crispy drum machine that does give the ACB to the mix and sounded great with all that other ACB up in there. Flawless!
I always lump the 303 and 606 together... People can cite a bunch of examples of famous songs using them but every time I have had the chance to use either of these specifically I am always left asking "Why would I want to?"
Once again you demonstrate your incredible skills and talent pulling amazing sounds out of a less-than-mediocre piece of..., well, you know. I just can't wait until Roland releases the highly anticipated SH-1T to see and hear what you will do with that incredible piece of..., gear.
roland boutiques like this feel like a souvenir you would get at their factory or some sort of novelty thing rather than something that was made to actually write whole songs with. many gear feels this way today really
I used to own the original TR-606 and I absolutely loved it, mostly because it looks like a 303 😂 Now I have the Behringer clone of both the 303 and 606 and settle with a 'that's good enough'.
The Aphex Pilz track was awesome! You, sir, are one skilled s.o.b! You make my fridays! ❤ The size of them compact boutique boxes is neat but I'll never replace my OG TR-8 with the 7x7 addon. It's a MEAN combo to have the 808 with the extra sounds from the 707/727 and the modified 909 kick/snare and snap & clap. Yummy!
Got a RD-6 in my early days of getting into synths (a drum machine to go with my Volca Bass) and, while I like the 606 sound, found myself wanting a beefer kick. Having found some nice Roland x0x samples, I ultimately added a SP-404 mk2 for an hardware counterpart to my DAW. Still, been pondering dusting off the 606 to pair with one of my many monosynths for an additional analog kick option and just jam.
Loved this. I totally want one... but mostly cause I don't see the point of the original without all the controls. As usual, you flatter the gear, and the sisters of mercy reference is worth watching the entire episode for. ;-)
I prefer Uli's rainbow of horrors over any of the boutiques for their better sized interface. The added effects, limited sound design options and longer sequences of the TR-06 are a big plus that still make the boutique worth exploring when looking for a nice toy to add to a small setup IMO.
I bought a TR-606 in 1982 (£199), because the 909 was £1000. In those days i had a home built 4 track reel to reel (i didn't build it - someone else did) and because of the analog bouncing the TR-606 on those old recordings sounds much nicer than a digital version years later ....

What about a Why choose Machines vs Your Pc or Apple.. Yes linux too
The 606 transient response rate is far better than the 909, which means it's kick hits harder.
I went to Klangfarbe and didn't see a framed picture of you. What an omission.
I need to send them a screenshot;)
I was just about to board a plane to fly to Vienna to buy a Colossus at Klangfarbe, but now the trip is off. LMK when they have Mao-sized posters of Florian everywhere.

Although lacking the 808 boom, this is a crispy drum machine that does give the ACB to the mix and sounded great with all that other ACB up in there. Flawless!
The TR-09 is more than usable!!!
Totally! I want one. @@AudioPilz
I ignored the Boutique boxes and just got a TR-8S instead.
I always lump the 303 and 606 together... People can cite a bunch of examples of famous songs using them but every time I have had the chance to use either of these specifically I am always left asking "Why would I want to?"
Word!!!
All those "the original machine" moments showing the clones is an excellent gag
Thank you so much!!!
That last jam, for me, has to be your best in the series.
Thank you so much!!!
4:46 You might have been dancing to goth music in clubs pre 2K, haven't you ;)
You know too much;)
I wonder if one day we will see inside Kangefabre. Thanks for the 1st 606 electro jam. 606 sounds so good in electro
That picture is either a helicopter or drone shot.
Thanks! Check out their webpage, there's a virtual tour through the shoppe
However my friday may be, after watching your video its always a bit brighter, and I thank you for that
Thank you!!!
Once again you demonstrate your incredible skills and talent pulling amazing sounds out of a less-than-mediocre piece of..., well, you know. I just can't wait until Roland releases the highly anticipated SH-1T to see and hear what you will do with that incredible piece of..., gear.
Note the use of MBase 11.
SH-1T is highly anticipated indeed!!!
Actually my favorite roland drum sounds come from this box.. Great jam at the end!
Thank you!!!
The tr-06 sounds like something you'd give to someone you hate for their birthday.
lol, shots fired;)
roland boutiques like this feel like a souvenir you would get at their factory or some sort of novelty thing rather than something that was made to actually write whole songs with. many gear feels this way today really
True that!
I actually like the 606 drum voices, but I would get one as a second or third rather than my first drum machine
Same here!!!
Yes, 606 is a spice, not the main dish.
I used to own the original TR-606 and I absolutely loved it, mostly because it looks like a 303 😂 Now I have the Behringer clone of both the 303 and 606 and settle with a 'that's good enough'.
Nice!!!
That 90s IDM Breakbeat is straight Squarepusher stuff, bravo!
Thanks!!!
Yummy!
Thank you!!! TR8 is a modern classic!!!
Great setup!!!
Why would we buy this? To start a Big Black tribute band, of course!
Good point!!!
Loved this. I totally want one... but mostly cause I don't see the point of the original without all the controls. As usual, you flatter the gear, and the sisters of mercy reference is worth watching the entire episode for. ;-)
Thank you so much!!!
I prefer Uli's rainbow of horrors over any of the boutiques for their better sized interface. The added effects, limited sound design options and longer sequences of the TR-06 are a big plus that still make the boutique worth exploring when looking for a nice toy to add to a small setup IMO.
Agreed!!!
I bought a TR-606 in 1982 (£199), because the 909 was £1000. In those days i had a home built 4 track reel to reel (i didn't build it - someone else did) and because of the analog bouncing the TR-606 on those old recordings sounds much nicer than a digital version years later ....
Ah, love tape comping artifacts!!!
