I used tape sync for years. I had this machine when I was young. All I had was a JX3P, a TR-707 and a Fostex 160 four track tape recorder. The tape sync was recorded on one track, and then played back to drive the 707, and the trigger output of the 707 - which was emitted by playing the rimshot sound - made the sequencer on the JX3P moved by one step. This way I could made different sequences with the JX3P and recorded them on tracks in perfect sync. Then I'd bounce and overdub tracks to create a full multitimbral song.
I love the last video. I’m having flashbacks of my teenage years at RadioShack, watching the secrets of 3-D and going home trying to learn 3-D modeling with my new mathematic CPU upgrade. Ending up spending all my time on doom.
It's hard to imagine a more perfect minimalist drum machine for people who don't need the drums to be the centerpiece of the mix. It does exactly what you need a drum machine to do, it does it well, it's a pleasure to do it, and it does nothing else.
I'm pretty sure there is a few dozen apps on your mobile phone appstore that serve more interesting sounds if you need drum samples then a crappy old plastic box that costs more then 3.fiddy

Kinda funny how it stuck around in acid house and oldschool house to this day, but no other electronic genre haha. Love how every sound is pretty harsh on it, especially with some slight distortion
The TR-707 was infamously the cheapest drum machine in Dixons, then the UKs biggest electronics store, at one point. For that reason you can hear this thing all over the UK rave and "baggy" scenes. The KLF used it, the happy Mondays, EMF, even bands that could afford better gear like New Order used it to get the same drum sound everyone else was using. You never forget those sounds. Sure the 808 is more iconic but the 707 has my heart personally. It has a kind of garage band sort of feel to it because of how it was used. It's the sound of a thousand bedroom djs with an Atari St and a 707 thinking they were going to be the next rave megastar. Or some teenagers with new guitars for Christmas adding in a drum machine and thinking they were now basically Joy Division. Its just instant nostalgia for a time passed for me.

I love the 707. I got mine in 2005 for $35 from a hip hop producer who found it at a Goodwill. It has a big cigarette burn on the face. For years it was my only way to sync din to midi. Try putting the kick through a LPF, or hihats through a HPF and you’ll find it’s a lot more versatile than people think
I have a circuit bent 505 with a pitch knob down to digital artifact. Patch points to glitch the sequencer, and two toggle switches to change between the extra kits to complete it. I did! I used the Tape Sync on a couple of tracks way back in the very early 90s, although with a 626, not the fabulous 707. The whole setup was kinda adventurous: We had a Roland Synth (I forgot which one, though), a Tascam Porta Two 4-Track, a Yamaha SY 55 (which I still own) and the 626 connected and »Trax« on a Mac Classic. They were, along with a guitar that I played live, plugged into two inputs of the Tascam, allowing for stereo panning. Thus we archived 7 trtacks on a 4-track, but the synths themselfes played a total of around 6 more tracks. I still have the masters too. And the final mixes. I only regret not to have taken any pictures of the setup, since it looked really awkward with numerous cables flying across the room. 😂
It may look a bit underwhelming but I like the 707. It sounds a bit Linndrum or Oberheim DMX. Use it more than 808/909 on TR8s, which had a CR78 upgrade few months ago 😎
The 707 and 727 sucked, IMO! (Mr. Roland must've flown on Boeings often!?). The Roland R8 is where its at, I still use samples from this sucker sometimes!
Hey, so recently I've managed to get my hands on a Kawai K-5000S and it is an absolutely fascinating beast. A combination of super deep patch structure with massively overdone presets that are hard to use in a track - but actually quite easy to tweak into usability once you get to know it. Of course an idea popped into my head - what would AudioPilz do with it? Please consider this a gear suggestion.
I think the 707 sounds more "contemporary" than many new machines. They say that eventually everything comes back into fashion, but I think with the 707 the sounds are so iconic that they never went out of fashion. And is it a myth, or do low bit rate samples "cut thru" a mix?
My first drum machine, too. It got stolen, but I got another one. I transfered the old data tapes to wav-files and they would load perfectly into the machine. So, yeah, tape sync is my thing. :) Great video, thanks.
I had a tr-707 for a hot minute back in the 80s and I got it cheap and used then. Call me crazy but I sold it and got a Casio rz1 that I was very happy with even though it's kick drum sounds like wet Balsawood wood flapping on paper. But it had midi and worked well With my CZ. Since you're doing old things I would love to see you review the Kawaii k5 spectral synthesizer and if you can find one the Kawaii xd5 drum synth, I would love to hear your takes on these
In the early 2000's a friend of mine had one of these. He found it in a closet at his church, untouched for years. Absolutely sucked. The only good thing about it is the sounds and even then you could get 707 samples anywhere. We were using trackers anyway, so this thing went into HIS closet and is probably sitting in yet another closet gathering even more dust. Unless he unloaded it on some sucker for a grand. Insane price for this thing.
I disagree. When hearing the drum machine on its own, it's full on nostalgia and all cheese, and I did not like it one bit. But in all three jams, AudioPilz added so much weird and unexpected sounds in an equally unexpected style, and it really shined.
I’m utterly ashamed to say this but early 2000’s the local 2nd hand shop had both this and a Korg DDM110 for sale for £50 and I chose the fucking Korg. I often think about this when I regret a decision I’ve made. It brings me comfort as no wrong choice is as wrong as that choice
A pair of headphones, my 707 and my old MG-1 pulse synced and I can spend hours just squelching away. You can lose yourself in the nicest possible way.
Snagged one from Cash Converter for £100 back around 2001 or so, sold it around 2015 for £400 and bought once with a faulty cowbell for £200 which I managed to fix with a replacement cowbell volume slider. I've got the rom expansion modification from Harry Axten (HKA) to install which will turn it into a kinda DMX / Linn / etc drum machine. I'd love to add tuning pots to all the instruments but I don't want to have knobs sticking out the front...
The 707 snare is on hundredthousands of 80s songs/hits. I much prefer it to the Linn drum snare, which is a bit too massive and not quite as attack-rich. The 707 couldn't do much but the sound it left the world is definitely used just as often as a TR 808.
I love the 707 and there is nothing you can do to make me dislike it. I win X^D Also, I love 90's demo and sizzle reels for CGI animations. Honestly, I like the 707 as the classic TRs go and I tend to like the LinnDrum crowd. Jam #3 definitely bangs. My own little showcase of the 707 is on the track Midday (by キラヨシ)
A phenomenal machine! Rough and no effects works. It sounded spectacular through your pedals. The 707 is for those for whom a sample just won’t do. My friend had this one back its day when I was in high school and it certainly generated my initial interest in electronic music before acid house was born. Great show, compositions, and I love the old gear LIVE.
When processed this box shines. You can take that harsh sound away completely and you would not recognize it's a 707. And with all it sync options, like a mc202, a must if you run din sync/triggers somewhere in your midi system.
It should be pointed out, and may have already been in these comments (I didn't bother checking), that most gear on this channel is new and therefore shouldn't have as many flaws as it does. The original 707 was made at a time when synth/machine design was still in its nascent stage. Roland deserve the benefit of that doubt. I'm sure there were well thought out reasons for its limits.
Guy I played with in HS in 1988 used one of these 707's to do Erasure covers and I would borrow it to some some Phil Collins/Genesis covers(bad ones lol). It seemed to do the job pretty damn well but you had to know its limitations. Only pro bands and rap outfits like Rodney-O & Joe Cooley could afford 808's/909's. The 707 was the young/budget musician's best friend for that time.
I have a 707 and it still works fine. I've been using my sampler more for drums b/c more sounds, efx, and less cords. But the sounds are still useful for more than just house/techno.
I bought a TR-707 for $135 in 2002 and I loved it. Such a joy to program and the sounds, while indeed limited, are classic. I sold it when it got trendy around 2014 for $450.
Nice- if you can believe it, my mom found mine at a garage sale for $20 about fifteen years ago. It worked for a while and I sampled the sounds off of it with some distortion, but is stopped working in recent years. I hope it’s an easy fix!
I bought mine for 70 quid in the mid nineties. It was a bit bashed up, but it's still with me and still working. I did need to do a fix on it involving mine being a later model so had a proprietary power supply so I replaced the socket so standard 12v power supplies fit so my failed power supply could be replaced and a faulty resistor I needed to swap out as even with the proprietary power supply it was always a bit sketchy in having moments when it would just shut off or not power up unless it had a prolonged plug unplugging. If you need some info I'll try and remember what I did haha but it was very simple
Something I love about the TR-8S is that it has all the 707 sounds built in, and the sequencer and mixer are also both great, so you really get all the good bits of the 707 without having to spend a grand on a 40 year old piece of hardware that needs a bunch of other stuff connected to it to be really usable. I do love the look of the thing though. If I had infinite space and infinite money, I'd probably spring for one.
Holy damn, I've never expected to see such a classic on this show! I definitely love how the 707 sounds, though I might prefer the 727 a little bit more, as these lo-fi percussive sounds are SO sweet! It's nice seeing this show evolve into a bit of a different territory, tackling these influential and recognisable machines. Keep it comin' mate!
This video breaks my heart. 15 years ago, I purchased a TR-707 at a garage sale in California for $25. Unfortunately, I was forced to sell it for 300€ due to financial difficulties. Although I made some money, I deeply regret not being able to keep that machine with me. It was my biggest regret when it comes to music gear."
Wait a minute this device made Millions of dollars for a lot of producers an artist back in the day so you need to give it a little respect bad gear🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏿✌🏿💯
When you put the TR-707's snare 1 through excessive reverb it actually sounds similar to the gated snare on the Roland R-8/SC-55's Power kit snare. I agree sometimes it's fun to embrace limitations but as there are plenty of TR-707 sample packs and VST instruments floating around is it really worth paying over £400 for a TR-707?
Ooh! Ooh! Just came up with an idea. Why don't you take on the Stylophone Beat? Only 35 EU or so and its room spill containing rock kit alone blows every 80's drummachine out of the water in spite of the little boxes many limitations. Sure, it could be called Bad Gear with some justification but it's also a truly inspiring funbox. I wish it already existed in the 80ties. It would have made my drums tracks sound a lot more realisitc, which was a very important ambition for me at the time, being a progger and such. 😁
Unable to ged rid of mine…was my first Drumcomputer ever and yes I bought it again last year! Would love a drumtracks for pitch but the sequencer of the 707 is just perfect really
I have 3 of them. It´s my favourite TR machine. Using it for my live act as well. This one has the rom mod and the Linn sounds banging hard on a club or festival sound system. Don´t wanna miss that.
sold mine for $200 don't miss it at all, thank god for modern drum machines like Jomox and Elektron RYTM! The old 707 = epitome of bad gear despite the "nostalgia" factor
Aside from the Lindrum, The 707 is the best Vintage Drum Machine for Cinematic Synthwave beats. The Kick Punches like a Snare, the Snare punches like a Snare too lol.
Some sweet jams Florian. I think the 707 is a timeless classic. I never owned one, but I still often use its sounds in my TR-6S or the gazillion sample packs on my computer. It still holds up today and packs a punch! I especially like the snares and hihats, they've got a bit of the 909 flavour but are just a bit different enough.

It may look a bit underwhelming but I like the 707. It sounds a bit Linndrum or Oberheim DMX. Use it more than 808/909 on TR8s, which had a CR78 upgrade few months ago 😎
Nice, I have to check it out
Aciiiid! 🥳
1 water please
The 707 and 727 sucked, IMO! (Mr. Roland must've flown on Boeings often!?).
The Roland R8 is where its at, I still use samples from this sucker sometimes!
R8 FTW!!!
16 steps is all you need - Church of the 909.
Halleluja!!!
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
Is there nobody who could stop this mad man!? Any gear he reviews goes up in price on second hand market, and I'm unable to afford it :(
The damage was already done here;)
You're late to the party for vintage gear on the cheap.
Sounds and looks really amazing despite its humble electronics. Sold the Yamaha‘s from that time, kept the 707.
The RXes didn't age as well as this TR
The real question is, why haven't Roland made a boutique version yet!?
Roland in the new millennium, enough said 🤫
I'd buy that in a heartbeat!!!
The 707 is a really nice looking machine.
I used a 707 and 727 years ago and they are more fun to use than the raw sounds would make you believe.
Agreed!!!
I used them, also, but I was only a passenger. They are pretty comfy, though, back in the days when Boeing made good ones.
@@RCAvhstape None of the bits fell off then?
@@trevypoos Nah, they were old school.
The 727 is on just about every house and techno track from 1986 to 1995.
I think the 707 sounds more "contemporary" than many new machines. They say that eventually everything comes back into fashion, but I think with the 707 the sounds are so iconic that they never went out of fashion. And is it a myth, or do low bit rate samples "cut thru" a mix?
There are plenty of low bit rate samples that don't cut through but some definitely do
My first drum machine, too. It got stolen, but I got another one.
I transfered the old data tapes to wav-files and they would load perfectly into the machine.
So, yeah, tape sync is my thing. :)
Great video, thanks.
Thanks!!! Nice technique!!!
Since you're doing old things I would love to see you review the Kawaii k5 spectral synthesizer and if you can find one the Kawaii xd5 drum synth, I would love to hear your takes on these
TR-8S + 707 sounds + a 727 perc sound or two = wonky phonky bliss.
I recently did this exact thing by swapping out the 707 toms for 727 perc. I dig the rawness of these samples!
Nice!!!
Yeah, prices are MAD!!!
As with most retro gear, it's the nostalga for the UI experience we are long for.
...and in this case it doesn't disappoint;)
Classic setup!!!
That's what I call profit;)
I really am curious for you to do one on the DR 660. I own one and I personally love the hell out of it
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
The 707 snare is on hundredthousands of 80s songs/hits. I much prefer it to the Linn drum snare, which is a bit too massive and not quite as attack-rich. The 707 couldn't do much but the sound it left the world is definitely used just as often as a TR 808.
I love the 707 ever since the album Face To Face by The Klinik. Time to sample my 707 before the caps crap out though...
707 samples need to be in every collection
Hi, do I know you from ffm and of?
@@mrudo8663Maybe, if you're the Electric Sheep? ;)
I love the 707 and there is nothing you can do to make me dislike it. I win X^D Also, I love 90's demo and sizzle reels for CGI animations. Have some more content for your library:

Thanks!!! Already used them in maybe 2-3 episodes too much;)
David Bowie used one of these a lot on his 1999 “Hours” album.
Nice!!!
"Even gibbons after a Hunter S. Thompson breakfast..." HA!
Do the 727 one day. The 707 has a side order of cheese, but the 727 is the whole dairy.
Mmmmmmh, cheese...
Honestly, I like the 707 as the classic TRs go and I tend to like the LinnDrum crowd. Jam #3 definitely bangs.
My own little showcase of the 707 is on the track Midday (by キラヨシ)
Thank you!!!
Thank you so much!!!
Simpler times!
@@AudioPilz Indeed they were. Keep up the great presentations.
dropping the rodney o and Joe coolie reference!...Everlasting BASS
I have a 707 and it still works fine. I've been using my sampler more for drums b/c more sounds, efx, and less cords. But the sounds are still useful for more than just house/techno.
Agreed!!!
I bought a TR-707 for $135 in 2002 and I loved it. Such a joy to program and the sounds, while indeed limited, are classic. I sold it when it got trendy around 2014 for $450.
Nice!!!
And now, ten years later you could even ask double of what you got for it then. ;)
Yeah tape sync is essential! Essential
(ly useless nowadays but I won't admit...).
TOTALLY ESSENTIAL!!!
i have to admit, that cowbell solo was the most amazing thing i have heared in a while. its stuck in my brain.
fuck it was good. yes.
Thank you so much!!!
Ok. The best sounding drum mashine ever. In ableton.
lol
Holy damn, I've never expected to see such a classic on this show! I definitely love how the 707 sounds, though I might prefer the 727 a little bit more, as these lo-fi percussive sounds are SO sweet!
It's nice seeing this show evolve into a bit of a different territory, tackling these influential and recognisable machines. Keep it comin' mate!
Thank you!!!
5:51 Sells for $500. "You can't get this sound any other way." #Grifting
Great performance using the classic TR707
6:27 love to hear/see you get a hold of a real Fairlight
Thanks!!! There are actually a few around here - not sure if they work
This video breaks my heart. 15 years ago, I purchased a TR-707 at a garage sale in California for $25. Unfortunately, I was forced to sell it for 300€ due to financial difficulties. Although I made some money, I deeply regret not being able to keep that machine with me. It was my biggest regret when it comes to music gear."
all three demo tracks were inspired and killer grooves! wow
Thank you!!!
Wait a minute this device made Millions of dollars for a lot of producers an artist back in the day so you need to give it a little respect bad gear🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏿✌🏿💯
Forgive me father, for I have synthed😂😂😂
Damn the proto phonk jam totally blindsided me! Great stuff per usual!
Thank you so much!!!
When you put the TR-707's snare 1 through excessive reverb it actually sounds similar to the gated snare on the Roland
R-8/SC-55's Power kit snare. I agree sometimes it's fun to embrace limitations but as there are plenty of TR-707 sample
packs and VST instruments floating around is it really worth paying over £400 for a TR-707?
"When life gives you cowbells, play a solo" made my day. Thanks for that!
The late Neil Peart could do that.
Thank you!!!
Jokes aside, Cowbells are a wonderful way to add spice to a track and the 707 and 727 make a brutal combo! Danke!
❤️❤️❤️
Ooh! 😁
Seeing you work the tiny mixer was very entertaining! Another great video! :)
Thank you so much!!!
nice video, although it is limited, this is such a fun device, had one for several years and regret selling it.
Yeah, a true relic
707 is king for me, great video!
Thank you!!!
Unable to ged rid of mine…was my first Drumcomputer ever and yes I bought it again last year! Would love a drumtracks for pitch but the sequencer of the 707 is just perfect really
Maybe get a 626?
NO! YOU CANT CRITIQUE THE 707 SNARE!
Did I?
@AudioPilz including it in a bad gear episode is a tragedy 😢
I have 3 of them. It´s my favourite TR machine. Using it for my live act as well. This one has the rom mod and the Linn sounds banging hard on a club or festival sound system. Don´t wanna miss that.
Why did I expect that, Vincent?;)
Industrial cowbell FTW! ❤
❤️❤️❤️
“Even gibbons 🐒 after a Hunter S. Thompson breakfast 🍹🍹🍹🍹can program it.” I will find a use for this hilarious phrase, and I will credit this video.
😀😀😀
sold mine for $200 don't miss it at all, thank god for modern drum machines like Jomox and Elektron RYTM! The old 707 = epitome of bad gear despite the "nostalgia" factor
Jomox is so rad!!!
Aside from the Lindrum, The 707 is the best Vintage Drum Machine for Cinematic Synthwave beats. The Kick Punches like a Snare, the Snare punches like a Snare too lol.
Agreed!!!
Who doesn't have 707 samples on their hard drive?
Mandatory!!!
909, 808, Juno 6, 60, 106 and JUPITER 8 incoming!
Blasphemy!!!
Thank you!!! Agreed, use them all the time!!!
