    The lyrics in this song are so funny to me because it's so relatable to being young. "You don't understand mama, he's a Magic Man!" That's how everyone thinks about the first time they fall in love when you're young. It's the epitome of "Love is Blind" lol.

    This is one of my favorite songs of all time. When I was a kid in the 70s this song actually scared me. It has a very ominous feel to it and obviously as a young child I had no idea what she was talking about, so I thought it was about some evil wizard or something casting spells on people. Needless to say it made a real impact on me at an early age and I have been drawn to this song ever since.

    • @thoronthol1175
      @thoronthol1175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think it actually IS about an evil magician casting a spell on her :) I love it too, and have a similar experience of it being a bit of a dark song from childhood. Kind of like David Bowie’s Space Oddity (dating myself here).. that song made me cry every time as a little kid.. but I loved it. Or, Hotel California, same thing.

    • @patrickupstream84
      @patrickupstream84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Spot on. This is a story about a teen girl who gets infatuated with an older man who has other intentions. "Come on home girl, he said with a smile. You don't have to love me but let's get high a while...." The guitar sustained notes and the solo itself sets the ominous tone throughout the song. Well constructed song that tells a story.

    • @Preacher357
      @Preacher357 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This was written by Ann Wilson from her own experience with being drawn by a man in the band that became Heart, when they were trying to break in...for her singing ability. They were a little north of the border in Canada at the time.....but it quickly got to the point when Ann wouldn't stay unless they included her little sister Nancy to sing and play backup. They later moved the band to Seattle, where the sisters are from and from where Heart came to be known.
    This is more of a magical song of romantic seduction.....and that's what it is meant to be.
    Of course, there's much more to their story than that, but there's your watered down version.

    This is a 70s stoner headphones song. If that’s your bag, you love it, hehe. Also, it really needs to be said: the hip guitar in early Heart should be properly credited to roger fisher. Listen to any of their music after he was out of the band and the importance of his contributions to their sound from this period will be readily apparent .

    Saw Heart at the Texxas Jam in 79. It was 110° on the field but Heart came on right about dark and a thunderstorm rolled in. It was beautiful to see the clothes they had on blowing in the wind and Ann was belting. Unfortunately back then they had to stop because of the lightning. Good times and memories.

    Wow, I've never heard you guys completely miss the mood and focal points of a song until now. Go get your head right (wink wink) and try this one again! lol The vocals are so sensual and smokey sounding, to say they sound like southern rock or the sound of music is crazy to me. More important than that is the GUITAR in this song! That steady vamp sets up a dark and brooding mood that the lead guitar plays against perfectly. Those tones! This is one of the songs that made me want to play guitar.

    The GREAT thing about 70s rock was that it was recorded LIVE. Individual parts weren’t recorded individually, then digitally pasted & copied.
    So a song lived & breathed, sometimes taking a new direction in the middle of a take!
    So BULLSEYE BROTHER! It was alive & organic, with a certain amount of room for improvisation! 👊🍻

    Heart definitely does great at capturing that kind of deep feeling; not just romance, but introspection and nostalgia as well. "Dog and Butterfly" is a brilliant tune, and very distinctive even within their own body of work; and just wonderfully captures that sort of introspective look back at childhood and growth.
