Today my sister, wee Coban and Danny decided to take the Three Isles Excursion Tour offered by Staffa Tours to Mull, Staffa and Iona. It's a full day tour but excellent value for money.
You can book online or in Oban in the Staffa Tours office in the town centre where you pick up all your tickets. The tour involves several ferries, a bus tour with guide and a boat trip out to the Isle of Staffa.
You have to be pretty on point with time as you can't really hang about in each place if you want to get round all you want to see but they let you know prior to leaving the ferry, boat or bus.
On Mull it's basically a guided bus tour across the island and back to where you get the boat out to Staffa.
For me, the most awesome part of the full tour is the boat trip out to Staffa. This is actually the second time I've been on this trip and we were pretty lucky to see some dolphins this time!
The Isle of Staffa is amazing and having a quick roam about is really cool. Normally you can go into the mouth of Fingal's cave somewhat but on this trip the path had fallen away in a storm so we couldn't go in, however there was a guy there repairing it so hopefully that will be fixed soon.
Iona is really cool and there is a toilet, shop and wee place to get hot food right at the harbour. The Abbey itself is looked after by Historic Scotland and to get in you do have to pay separately. I'm a member of Historic Scotland (well worth it by the way!) so I get in with my membership but this time round we decided to head up to the tallest point on the island on a wee hike to take in some views and savour the epic scenery. The light was just right and the island looked magical at the time.
Oh yeah, there are toilets, a shop, bar and place to get hot food on the ferries. plus dogs are welcome on the trip.
It's a long day and normally the bus ride back across Mull and then the ferry back to Oban is quite a quiet and calm time however on this occasion we had a great surprise waiting for us in Oban! Oban High School Pipe Band was playing when we got off the boat and it was great to hang out for a bit listening to them play before heading back to the campsite.
Really great trip and I'd thoroughly recommend it! It's really a great part of Scotland to explore that brings you back time and time again!

awesome scenery, loved those cliffs and the dolphins although I've literally just watched my own dolphin performance out front ... I live on a river! Those pipes brought back so many memories. I grew up doing Scottish dances, yes here in Australia, but doubt I've seen many more than one piper at a time so those two bands were tops, thanks John.
Coban is growing quickly, soon he'll be back packing across the fells with you.

Great vid' again and good to see Mull, Iona and Staffa again. I have happy memories of a holiday up there in 2010. We did a walk over Dun I (cracking little hill) and ended up getting a bit lost on the way back to the ferry and a farmer told us off for going through his field!

Nice, always love visiting Iona and Staffa, out past the Dutchman's Cap, the little cove to the rear of Fingals Cave at the right time of year often has seal pups in it. Scenery in Mull is fantastic the midges less so! Nothing seems to deter them, spawn of Satan! Always worth driving round Mull to the Isle of Ulva for a quick visit and a beer, although the history of Ulva, Starvation Point in particular is depressing, where the old and sick who couldn't afford to emigrate were forced to go and fend for themselves during the Clearances. Wikipedia has an interesting write up on the island but calls it Starvation Terrace. For some reason the pipes and drums always make me want to punch someone...

I'm so envious :-) It's my dream to see dolphins and puffins. In some countries like Belarus and other post-soviet countries they keep dolphins in tiny dolphinariums which is cruel. I wish people could see dolphins in freedom, not in captivity.

Oh no, I'm totally not into animals being kept in captivity. Big time not into it. I wouldn't visit a zoo etc unless the animals were there for a specific reason i.e. not there for human entertainment. Animal cruelty is sets me off really badly actually. It bothers me greatly and I react very badly to it! Usually with rage.
