Rich from a 63 year old retired airline aircraft mechanic that's worked on everything over the years, YOU ARE THE BOSS brother. What a great truck, and a a great accomplishment, stuffing that big Cat under the hood.
This is the truck every guy wanted to dream of and build, but would be illogical, insanely out of reach and too damn complex, big and daunting. And yet, you've made an incredible series documenting the success, the head scratchers, the failures, and the trials to get to this. Even if no one else ever copies this, I hope they see the thought process and determination from this as a blueprint for success. Success in starting, success in keeping going and success in over coming challenges to reach a running project. You, your family, friends and crew, have a great 2024!
Don't feel too bad about the hose, Rich. I was a hose routing guy on several vehicles and we don't actually do much in the way of cycle testing calculations. We take our best guess in CAD, we build prototypes (which almost always get revised), then we shake the whole truck (like... really, really, shake it... for a long, long, time) and see what breaks. Prototypes get driven to lunch and on errands all the time exactly to find those sorts of gremlins while they're close to home. You basically did it the same way the "pros" do. We've even fixed our share on the side of the road. 😂
Man I love this channel. Rich seems like he is such a down to earth regular dude and not some played up ridiculous youtube star. Really enjoy your builds guys, can't wait to see what comes next!
The usual project teething problems. Folks expecting things to work perfectly the first time on a project like this have never done a project this involved. Very cool truck. Can’t wait for your Edison build as I have one ordered as well.
Do you need a specialist. I am the specialist. That line should be in your intro every time. Great story Rich. And as always great editing Aaron. Love the music too.
Sucess is built on a foundation of failures! You push through and never give up! Love the FTreeKitty! I wish Cat engines were an option for 3/4 or one ton work trucks!
Your truck is every envirofreaks worst nightmare. Dripping fluids everywhere, smoggy, just pure unbridled excellence.... love it man!! That interior just sets it off!!
You have quickly become my favorite TH-cam rebuild channel. I love your style, I love your laid-back approach, and your can-do attitude. It is also a plus that when you grab the bull by the horns you finish the project. I'm pretty handy, fairly mechanically inclined, play you take it to a new stratosphere. I'm like...."whaaat".... How in the world did he do that? Thank you for making such amazing, and entertaining Content. Blessings to you, and to all your future endeavors. I will be tuned in for what's next. Darryl Florida
Thanks guys for continuing the F Tree Kitty adventures. You're making the build look easy as usual. Any one of the 500 tasks involved in building that truck would frustrate me to quitting. Very satisfying and fun to watch. Hell on Earth to actually do.
The F-Tree-Kitty might be my favorite project or DBG. Granted, it's all great Co tent, but this one I especially enjoyed from start to finish, inception to fruition. Top tier stuff, gents. Can't wait to see what 2024 brings. 🤘😎🤘
This is one of my favorite channels to watch now! Neighbors to the north , very informative and love the knowledge I gain about my trucking industry and equipment.
I was taught on the older rigs that you need to "milk" the power steering to press the air bubbles out while the engine is off. The idea is that fluid flowing has cavitation that prevents bubbles from being bleed out. Lift it again and cycle it back and forth 10 times lock to lock and see if the whine clears up.
Teething issues are a guarantee with such a project... but you chip away and get it perfected ... I'm in the same boat with my camper conversion. Awesome workmanship Rich 👍👍👍
Happy new year to all of the DG family. I’m excited to see the upcoming year’s projects. Big yes for highlighting the obstacles that every project has and how it’s just part of the journey. I have people in my village, all Dodge owners, that any small setback on their vehicle is trip ending and a personal failure which isn’t a happy way of life. Also the brake kleen/ hairspray method has never let me down. Thanks again for bringing us along even though I’m only here for the music.
Probably my favorite build on TH-cam ever done. The Caterpillar has to be the coolest swap I’ve seen, and very technically interesting to follow along with. Only thing I disagree with is the bumper choice, but that’s subjective. My dad had a white 97 I remember crawling up into as a young child, and claiming to “drive.” I’m happy to say I have a 97 F350 of my own now that I actually do drive. I think I’ll keep the 7.3 that’s in it though haha.
Thank you for creating such excellent content! You and Aaron make high quality videos with real life projects and none of the fabricated drama of the networks. I’m sure you are inspiring the current and next generation of mechanics, engineers and enthusiasts. Keep up the great work and I’ll keep tuning into every episode.
We'd like to see the 24V cummins silverado do this kind of work too! But to be honest, a crew cab truck makes a lot of sense in long road trips. Still my fave truck on YT!
Happy New Year to ya DeBoss and Aaron and Andy. You guys rock and can't wait to see what 2024 has in-store for us!!! 👍😎💯♥️🇨🇦 And all the rest of the crew to cuz without y'all we wouldnt have this incredible channel!!♥️♥️♥️
One day I'm gonna put together a project truck of my own. This video both scared me and got me excited for it. Can't wait for all the pain and headaches with a little bit of smiles sprinkled on top.
Yes! But for the diesel mechanic he is, i think he should explore the bmw 3.0 straight 6 m57 engine He did a om606 But Forgets this legendary bmw diesel engine
As handy and knowledgeable as Rich is, to hand-build a truck and have it break down several times already, is a testament to how hard it is to build a reliable diesel truck. I feel the average every-day person has no clue as to what type of engineering and expertise goes into building these things. We just bitch and call it “junk” if anything breaks, lol.
I feel you on the working out the bugs part. I did a frame swap (2wd-->4wd)/4.8LS/4l80e swap on my squarebody and there isnt much I havent had to do twice. Between 40 year old parts you thought would be ok (they werent), new parts that were bad (bad new caliper which mislead me to believe I had a bad trans as it wouldnt shift out of 1st), wire chaffing from vibration, half a dozen brake line leaks, transfer case slipping out of low (still havent figured that out even after disassembling for a second time.), and installing the front calipers upside down. Im no professional mechanic obviously but the struggle is real.
That frame set that you dropped off is for that Edison electric Truck build that you're going to be building. Center section is for Battery storage!! I work at a Recycling facility and i have stipped boxes like that!! All the best from Surrey BC Canada
hairspray is also great for installing grips onto handlebars of things like bikes and scooters. while its wet it helps you to slide the grip on and then it really sticks them on
So refreshing to see a repower with anything but a sCummins. Cat makes a far superior product, and it should give you years of service and reliability.
Excellent work Rich. Really enjoyed this F350 series. Did I notice correctly that the engine starting improved significantly after the high pressure filter delete?
Awesome video, nice to see that truck make it all the way down to Texas and back. Now you can tweak the intercooler hose connections if you said it looked a bit bent, and can now work on the rest of the truck when you get time. It is awesome, love how you have turned it into a modern truck with the great old school styling.
10:38 I think you don't need the music I rather hear the engine. That's just me tho I'm just joining the journey so idk if that's something pple complained about which is why you do it.

I have never thought to wear ear plugs while working under my truck until I just saw you do it, I'll have to keep that in mind next time I'm on a service road smacking rear drums underneath a spool truck.

Much respect and credit for making great content and building awesome projects that are very difficult to do.🙂👍 I hope one day I'll have the patience and knowledge that you have. I work on cars but tend to get frustrated because I don't have great tools or the right tool. Ur videos always boost my confidence to finish the job on my vehicles.
Sounds like those fuel lines needs some sort of strain relief which is mounted to the high pressure fuel filter assembly, so hopefully that eases the vibration forces on those o rings.
I was told by my local wrecker that those steering boxes were used in all the ford trucks, from Ranger to Heavy Duty. He sold me a couple ranger boxes over the years for my F350. After killing off a few used ranger boxes I also bought a Red Head.
I can't think of a more fitting truck for the Cat filter conversion on the FASS pump. Filter numbers 1R-0749, and 256-8753 cross with the original FASS filters, and the yellow Cat branded filters would look phenomenal hanging out from under the #FTreeKitty.
My dad had a one of those body style trucks when I was little and I’ve got a bus with a 3126 so this thing is easily my favorite TH-cam project vehicle.
Nice truck Rich - watch the series, you should share towing mileage - I know you didn`t tow all that many KM`s this trip, but would be great to know for those diesels with the emissions systems and the new big gassers. Love the channel, such great projects
That first long haul is nerve racking. I built a Cummins swapped 79 square body in 8 months. Wife and I one of our friends and our two dogs Left a moth later from Pennsylvania to Colorado. Towing a 34ft camper . Blew 5th gear out of the nv4500. Had gears overnighted from home to best western transmission in Colorado Springs. Back on the road in four days . Went elk hunting and returned home .
"Redhead Steering" builds a damn good gearbox but nothing beats a "Lee power steering" gearbox. At least most NASCAR teams don't think so. Owner Tom Lee built me a gearbox, with hydraulic assist, years ago. It has been on a few trucks I've owned. Tom is now retired but a long time customer took over and runs the business today. I don't mean to be stepping on any potential sponsors foot, just saying there's other options. Hope the new year brings the best for everyone.

I got a 2006 peterbilt dump truck C15 twin turbo. But the 7.3 L navistar diésel engine got a very very distinctive sound. In my personal opinion sound much better.
Rich. I have a red top steering box in my TJ for over 6 years. Still as tight as the day I got it. I would highly recommen it to anybody looking to replace their steering box
If it was easy, it wouldnt be fun. The satisfaction of making it work, fixing it when it breaks, making it better, thats what us gearheads love. Ill take being on the side of the highway fixing an issue, before sitting in an office cubicle anyday of the week.
My Super Duty has the V10, way down on torque compared to your Cat, but it came with the 4.30's, and even with 31" tires on it, it was too much gear for even that engine. I switched to the 3.73 just because it was a factory option and what a world of difference. It pulls so much harder through first gear, mostly because you don't run out of RPM at 15 mph, and even towing I've had that truck to its max tow rating with and without the 4.30's and it has zero problem moving that 10,000 lb trailer either way. You will not regret the gear change at all because I certainly don't. MPG around town is about the same but up on the highway I jumped from 12 mpg to mid 14's mpg if I keep it 65 or under. Huge improvement there. I've even beat 10 mpg towing heavy on country roads (sub 55 speeds). It was pretty consistently 7-8 mpg before. She's no diesel, but that seems to be a sweet spot gear wise for these SRW trucks.
I remember seeing the Ford build . The dash was a really nice addition.. i dont remember exactly i was wondering if its has can network to communicate.. i appreciate the videos
Lol. Yes i did make 22 and im not the only one. Thats not a lie. But of course thats when they are healthy and the diff and tire size make a big difference too. You will never get that mileage with a 3:73 or 4:10 diff.

It’s crazy how good the much later bumpers look on an old square body, love that look! 👍
I personally don't like it, but each to his own.
Looks 10 times better than the 4th gen bumper swaps people do to 2nd gen Dodge Rams.
Thats actually a controversial mod. But hey at least he didn't put chevy mirrors on it

I remember seeing the Ford build . The dash was a really nice addition.. i dont remember exactly i was wondering if its has can network to communicate.. i appreciate the videos
23:34 😂😂😂😂😂 him looking under the truck at the gas he spilled
His buddy 🤣🤣
Some 2010 and up superduty had 3:31 ratio axle. Would be very good for fuel mileage and when you tow you just keep one gear lower with the tap shifter
15 mpg is bad. I used to get 22 mpg with a 6.0 powerstroke 3.55 ratio and 16" tire. My 6.4 was making around 20.5 mpg with 3:73 ratio and 20" tire
You were not getting 22mpg with a 6.0. There's two things an honest man will lie about. 1. The women he's been with 2. His gas mileage
Lol. Yes i did make 22 and im not the only one. Thats not a lie. But of course thats when they are healthy and the diff and tire size make a big difference too. You will never get that mileage with a 3:73 or 4:10 diff.
