After all these years, So Red the Rose is still one of my favorite albums.

One of my all time favorite albums, period! Revisiting this video and their beautiful songs after many years - none of today’s music comes close in my book. So glad I grew up with D2 and the music of Arcadia in my life. So creative and expressive - true art.

Song is texture upon texture. Listen to this in the dark, eyes closed, lights off with good headphones and envelope yourself in the tapestry of soundscapes and ethereal dreaming.
It truly is an amazing song, such a powerful emotional punch to the whole thing. It instantly blew me away back in the day, as my impression of Duran Duran at the time was of a bubble gum pop group, no real musical ability. I would love to have been there to see this song evolve from beginning to end in the studio, really an amazing work.

I love Simon’s voice but, this is one song where I extra love it. Hard to believe it’s been almost 40 years since they did this project. I’ve been a Duranie since I was 12 years old and always will be.

I bought this album on cassette in '85 as a 12 year old. I was in awe of the beauty of this song. I'd listen to it, rewind it, and listen to it again and again.

Right, videos virtually never capture the spirit or the feel of the song. This song in my opinion, with it's extreme moodiness, and strange emotion it evokes is particularly difficult to capture in a video. And while I wouldn't say they nailed it (of course that's left to the interpretation of each individual), I will say it is excellent, and comes as close to doing so as could be done. Maybe if they had slowed the motion down about 30%, it would have evoked that surreal feel the song captures so well a bit better.
Wow, I'm instantly transported back to 1985, banging away on my Commodore 64 keyboard. I literally wore this cassette out. Had to trash it and buy a new one. It was such an unexpected work of art when released, after being distraught over the prospects of a DD breakup. Not sure I've seen these vids, thanks for sharing!
I was actually able to tell Nick Rhodes in person that I thought So Red The Rose was a masterpiece. I thought that in 1985 and I think that now in 2021. Nick didn’t seem surprised and he thanked me.
I definitely agree. I am a lifelong Duran Duran fan, but Arcadia was really something very special. I’m glad it was one magical album with Nick and Simon. Some projects need to be small to be perfect. So Red the Rose is in my top 2 for desert island discs.

Except that in the end of an age before digital video effects, and the end of an age of musicians who didn't drop straight to digital audio tools, we find ourselves here: right about here.
The only real tragedy is that in either a century, or a millennia, or an epoch from now, no-one will remember this song and this video for the cultural landmark that it is.

Mark Egan playing an eight-string fretless bass guitar on this, an extremely rare instrument. I knew I needed one the moment I heard this song for the first time. Gorgeous song, ends far too soon.

Cheers to director, Dean Chamberlain, for being such a rare talent but also a genius visionary with the patience of a saint. the time it took was so well worth it. this is more than a music video. it is pure ART. "missing" has always been ingrained in my head as being one of the most exquisite films yet each time i watch it, it's as mesmerizing as the first time i saw it many decades ago. you and DD magic together

this is one of my top 5 songs of all time. Still, all these years later, this song haunts me with it's beauty. And the thunder to finish the song is *sigh* worthy. thanks for posting such a clasdic, perhaps some new Duranies are being converted to our "new religion" ;)

I got serious "All She Wants Is" vibes from this. While it is different footage using the same technique, the jittery stop motion style doesn't match the tempo of the song in the same way. I almost think it would have worked better at a lower frame rate to match the slower tempo. Of course, higher framerate would work too, but would have exponentially increased the cost, so wouldn't have been feasible :P
In 1986 this was a breakthrough video... just like "Take on Me" Today we can see it's flaws but when it was released this motion technique was cutting edge. "All She Want Is" was shot after this video. Cheers.
@@BUISAN_MUSIC oh I know "All She Wants Is" came after, I'm just saying it worked better for that video because the framerate of the stop motion matched the tempo of the song. In this one,... it doesn't match up and feels kinda awkward. Now it could be the fact I am an animator, so these kinda things stand out for me far more than they would for most others.
All that being said,... part of me wishes they continued as Arcadia for a few more years. It was a very unique sound and I wanted to hear more

@@BUISAN_MUSIC I feel it may have worked better being a tad more primitive (essentially). Same style, but lower the framerate a bit more. Follow the same beats per minute as the song.

I still can't imagine how this technique or imagery, lights, glows and shadows were implemented in the 80's but I like it a lot. Videos like this or "All She Wants Is" are always amazing to me!
