Yeah, if he doesn't even sound nervous or surprised at the prospect of fighting five guys at once, just back away. But of course, we in the audience want to see cowards/bullies who pick a fight with the help of four of his buddies get his ass kicked.

The initial scene was perfect, hooker you pay a set amount per sex, it's like a honest contract, GF/Wife takes 50+% of your income for a set amount time or till the end of your days. A Hooker suddenly sounds more honest and gallant all the sudden.

      *****
Would you really say that a prostitute is the epitome of honesty ? After all the whole point of the whore business is about making the client feel as though he (or marginally she) didn't pay for it, as though she (or marginally he) is doing whatever filthy things she (he) does out of spontaneous desire and genuine affection, therefore it's entirely based on a fundamental lie (even if there can be some brutal honesty involved during the actual proceedings, and in the way the eternal link between sex and money is acknowledged before and after the meaty parts of the play). In french (pardon my french!) there's an expression, "coup de pute" (literally "whore's trick") which applies to a person who has robbed another, or treated that person in a very dishonest way. And there's a controversial french author, Alain Soral (brutally honest himself ! see his Wikipedia article...), who likes to say that a journalist is either struggling with unemployement, or a whore ("un journaliste, c'est soit un chômeur, soit une pute"), meaning a journalist has to lie or at least cover the truth to a large extent to be allowed to work in mainstream medias. Finally, recently assasinated cartoonist Georges Wolinski wrote (at least I read this sentence quoted from him on some forum years ago and found it illuminating) that in today's society, everybody has to be either one of three types of people : the whore, the client, and the whoremonger (of course one can be several of those at different times, in different contexts or with different people). But of course if you consider that *every* woman is intrinsically dishonest when it comes to money and sex, and that a whore is a lesser evil, then this whore, uh, whole argumentation becomes moot... But, lastly, this makes me think of a scene from "Magnolia" -- a masterpiece of a movie with Tom Cruise at his finest : the woman played by Julianne Moore admits to a lawyer that she did marry her husband (father of Frank T.J. McKey, Cruise's character) for his money, _but_ now that he's about to die, she realizes that she really loves him, feels ashamed and wants to withdraw from the will. That's only one the the many mesmerizing quandaries and inspiring riddles you'll find in that movie if you haven't seen it yet. "Respect the Cock... and taaaame the Cunt !"

Almost all Hollywood movie actors are excellent actors. Cruise is one of the best in a field of very fine actors. When investors put millions into a movie they want someone good. There are plenty of bad films but almost never because the actors weren't good enough. It's usually the script.
The issue was just size. The books are a little silly in that they obsess about Reacher's size. I've read about half of them because I read a lot. Lee Child is a good writer - not great - but he has a hit with Reacher and all those references to his size.
In many ways Reacher is the rebirth of Travis MacGee. He also gets in a lot of fights and is big but I think he is described as 6'4" in only one book. Reacher is described as 6'5" in every chapter of every book over and over. So Cruise is a very poor choice for a guy whose major characteristic is his size.

Thing about it is this: The guy in the bar you need to be afraid of is not the guy yelling and showing off his muscles and tattoos. It's the quiet guy in the corner. If you pick a fight with a guy and he has ZERO emotion on his face, you're about to get beat. Badly.

    • @jonathanlocke6404

In these choreographed movie fights the hero always gets to take his adversaries one at a time. In real life they are more likely to come at you simultaneously if you don't keep moving and take you to the ground. Then you are in real trouble. Most fights, one on one, almost always end up on the ground. On the ground is a bad place to be unless you are a grappler and it's just you and the other guy.
