    I love using shades of blues and greens when dyeing like this, reminds me of a mulberry silk lap I dyed recently in a gradient with almost identical colours. Those mini skeins are so gorgeous! I would love to try this at some point soon.

    I love these types of videos! They're extremely useful in terms of figuring out how to get a precise shade, but also the combinations of gradients you can make is fantastic. I liked how you grouped them in sets of five, but picking 10 is a bit trickier. For my personal palette I'd have gone with the bluest corner but I'm a super blue girl!

  • @shel722
    @shel722 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Doing the math, all the diagonals from top left to bottom right should be the same ratios at different depths of shade. So I believe that you just have 9 different ratios and then multiple DOS on those ratios. The 9 that you pointed out would make a great fade are the 9 different ratios. The "middle" 16 are the DOS off of those. So when you felt like some of the colors were pretty similar, it's because they were. It was the same color at a different DOS.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe! I didn't check the math beyond the middle section. :D

    What great fun.... Thanks for doing these tests. 👍 There's no way to pick rows or columns, they are all so gorgeous. I think you've outdone yourself with this colour mix. However, I do agree with the 10 you picked. The fade connects - if you get what I mean 🌟🐨🧶

  • @yasminpatel231
    @yasminpatel231 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, initially, you let the yarn sit in the dye solution plus acid for two days without heating it, and then you steamed it afterwards to set the dye. Is that correct? Thank you for this video by the way. I wasn't sure whether it was possible to mix different dyes to create a completely new colour, but you've just demonstrated how to do it.

  • @shel722

    When you dye a base that isn't 100% protein fiber, does that technically change the DOS? If you have a 100g skein, but it's 15% cotton neps, does that mean you are really dyeing something more like an 85g skein?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question! So the 15% neps don't take up color, but when you're talking about the depth of shade you're still talking about the total weight. So a 1% DOS on a donegal yarn may look different from a 1% DOS on 100% wool for that reason. BUT I've found that some of the donegal not taking up color mutes the colors a bit, so that is a consideration, too.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the deeper colors are pretty true but you're right, the more pastel color are infulenced by the base

    Why do they have to be steam set when they sat outside in the sun for two days. Shouldn't having them sit in the sun set them.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sun could be enough for that length of time. I like to do a final steam set because some pigments really do need a higher temperature to properly set. The final steam is so fast since I can do most of the samples all to gether that it just gives me some reassurance.

    could this math work for fabric as well?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure! If you're looking at the weight of fabric to the weight of dye it should work.
