- TWICE just hit their 5th year anniversary, making them one of the senior groups in the industry. Since their getting their start in 2015 they have been the most commercially successful korean girl group of all time with 9 million total sales. But before their worldwide dominance, because they made you likey likey and feel special, before the 9 girls were global superstars, there were 16 of them on a small survival show, fittingly named SIXTEEN.
So who exactly were the contestants of SIXTEEN and where are they now?

Miyoung was technically supposed to be in the group especially with the addition of two more positions in twice. She actually could've made it. But it's sad she didn't. Her vocals were top tier

I definitely believe she would fit twice. Especially if you see jeongyeon who is known for having a classical powerhouse vocal tone. If someone who never knew twice compared minyoung and jeongyeon voices they would think minyoung is in twice and Jeongyeon is a solo artist. Minyoung I would say is in between jiyho and jeongyeon. She would actually fit in well. Either way. Let's support in her solo work.

SIXTEEN was so brutal to be honest because its not just usual trainees competing, we got long time trainees like NaJeongJi, especially Jeongyeon who at some point was "like fuck this, I'll rather work part time at a bakery" and Jihyo who doesn't know other life other than being a trainee who's goal is to debut after training for 10 years. I guess JYP wanted to see if they still have that passion to debut.

Out of everyone, I really think Chaeyeon deserves her success the most. She must be a unbelievably strong, resilient and determined person to go through 3 programs. Also, personally, I think she is one of, if not the most, well rounded and talented of the 16 girls. Girl took MAIN VOCAL roles and NAILED them in Produce, she is RENOWNED as an incredible MAIN DANCER by both idols and industry professionals (ie. dance instructors, choreographers), has a charming and funny personality for VARIETY AND can RAP with the sass and rhythm a rapper need, often rapping in IZ*ONE.
i think somi deserves her success the most, she was in 3 temporarily girl groups but still never gave up her dream as an idol and decided to go solo. She can also rap, dance and her vocals are amazing 😍

@@lestonesricherob.2439 no, somi is way better at singing and rapping while chaeyeon is better at dancing plus somi is younger than her. Somi has been hated on so much especially about being mixed race and she still constantly gets hate, even the song SHE produced she got hate for because she apparently stole rose song and solo.
I think Chaeyeon was actually really high on the rankings of Produce 48 like top5, but because of the rigging thing, the producers of the show wanted drama and suspense so they made sure to place her in the place that would attract the most attention - last place, barely making it. I think she would have been top 3 probably if no rigging.
@@sandyxx6243 Chaeyeon vocal is so powerful plus she can hit highnote EASILY so i think Chaeyeon is still better and when it comes in rapping, I don't think both of them is on proffesional level. Maybe average? But Chaeyeon advantage is she can rap faster than Somi.

To be fair, i'm glad she didn't debuted earlier. 17 is still young to have a career but old enough to have better understanding of all the legalities behind it to not get exploited.

@@Cheese_Doggy12 In Sixteen at least, if i remember correctly, her being so young and lacking experience was a part of it. She was 12 at the time after all. Some things come with age and experience. I think it's a case that you can be good at doing something but not knowing why it's good.

Kinda sad update: as of April 2021, IZ*ONE has been disbanded

sad, I heard sixteen happened cuz one of the member of 6mix (Lena) left and they can't find a replacement, so they have to cancel the debut. Anyways, I'm also kinda glad she didn't debut in twice cuz she us better as a soloist.

@@mandarin2378 If you watch sixteen, you see Minyoung lacked confidence and stage presence to become a group member. Jyp knew she can do better, but Minyoung don't have the confidence to show it. Plus, in the end, JYP himself said she's better as a soloist, and he knew she won't fit twice's colors. In my opinion, Minyoung could be a great soloist than a group member, since her talents can overshadow other group members if she debuts in a group.

Wish people paid more attention to Jiwon. She did a complete 180 in Idol School, where she was able to show her true self. Her group said if they were to choose another leader, it would be her. Despite her loud personality, they said she has a responsible side to her. She became so much prettier and one of the better vocals of the newer generation.
Fromis_9 are all very talented despite the Idol School Stigma. They are selling well in Korea.

After we saw sixteen we had the greatest trainees debut as TWICE which were Jihyo,dayhun,jeongyeon,Sana,mina,chaeyoung,momo,tzuyu,and nayeon form as nations girl group for the people who didnt make it i would see them as succsesful stars in the future because nayeon jeongyeon sana jihyo minyeong momo mina ji won dahyun chaeyoung tzuyu chae yeon chaeryoung eun shu somi and natty worked so hard

I honestly don't think it would have even been appropriate for a 13 year old to debut with other late teen girls. As talented as she is, I'm glad she didn't end up in the twice lineup especially since now they're moving on to more mature concepts while Natty is still super young. Support nineteen though!

A little mistake on the wonder girls timeline. Sunmi left and was replace by hyelim, then sohee and sunye left, then Sunmi returned and then they disbanded all together in early 2017
Also winner and ikon where in WIN then ikon in mix and match
JYP raising the best idols in industry. Even those who left JYP ended up debuting and getting success. It's obvious any company can debut all of its idols but I could say that from other groups and soloist with fame now, JYP has the largest number of former trainees and artists than any other company. From Hyunah to AB6IX, JYP left its mark in almost every kpop group.
Right, they even had their own companies.
JYP is good at finding passionate artists, not just an idol. Most of their artists show growth in and after being a trainee in JYPE
All of the jyp artists seem really influenced by jyp... coz he was rejected by sm and then he went on to start his own company and debut artists who can give sm artists a run for their money... we make fun of him but he is really inspirational in this aspect...

Somi had gone through a whole lot!
Somi went from making it to the finale of Sixteen and got eliminated for being too young to winning 1st in Produce 101 and debuting as an all rounder center in IOI. The disbandment broke her but she SLAYED her time with other temporary groups like UNNIES and Girls Next Door. Now she’s paving her path as a soloist. She’s so talented and has an amazing personality. I’m sure she’ll get her big break as a soloist soon. ❤️❤️❤️ Support Somi 💗🥰

momo was chosen because of her dance skills, Twice has a cute concept at the beginning but they needa main dancer who is bold, strong, and energetic. Mina was good, but she was not energetic enough since she is a ballerina. Momo was added to make Twice's dance rating as equal as the others. Even tho Momo has a decent vocal, but her dancing carries Twice

I’m a Big Once and I always wanted Minyoung to be the 10th member, imagine being told you’re gonna debut for you to not even debut in the end with your 3 other members
I think part of the reason for Sixteen's alumni's success is because most of the trainees were already at the top level before the show began. JYP already knew what they could do, so he wasn't testing singing or dancing. He was seeing if the girls had star potential, if they'd crack under the pressures of the industry, and how well they'd work as a team. It also didn't hurt that many of the contestants had personality plus on top of all that. The contestants were so good JYP could have easily made two groups from the roaster, though how financially wise that would have been would be another question. The way I see it, he was using the show as both bootcamp training on the harshness of K-pop for the future members, and hype for the future group to the public. As such, I feel the purpose was a little different than the usual survival show.
Somi is doing so well, she's one of the most successful soloists right now!!
Even though I just started watch SIXTEEN in 2020, but I really cried whenever they're crying, being scolded or eliminated😭. Gratefully they're success now
i'm literally watching it now, after seeing everyone debut and crying when they get eliminated! it's still so sad to me, but i'm glad that it all worked out for the girls in the end.

I think Natty struggled the most, although Chaeyeon joined 3 survival shows, she always has her sister and family with her. Natty was alone away from home, she was a strong contender in Idol School, the show used her popularity as former Sixteen contestant but later robbed the chance away from her. Her talent and charm brought her to finally debut solo.

@@namename-ph7bg it was a producers choice. And they wantded a group anyway that could also debut in Japan so aditionally to Mina and Sana, the momo was added back. And she brought great stuff to the show and is if not the most popular member internationally. She always ranks one in merchandise selling and most searched up twice member. It was overall a good and well thought decision.

yup but i remember JYP said that she didn't even want to eliminate momo, but it was mostly due to the audience. Plus the final group kinda need more dancers since the group's dancers would only be Sana and Mina, and sixteen had much better dancers.
What always gets me is seeing mina and sana cry for that unexpected miracle when momo became the last member to join Twice. Seeing their best friend return after thinking it was forever gone just hits you in chest

after stanning twice I watched Sixteen. I knew some of the other ppl who were in other shows (like idol school, PD 101, PD 48) and I've gotta say, Chaeyeon is really strong. First, she was in Kpop star 3, getting into jyp with her sister. Being in Sixteen and but ended up being the first one eliminated. Joining a new company, joining produce 101, barely making it to debut. Became a member of Iz*one, finally achieved her dream. And now izone has disbanded and she's on a new show (Street woman fighter). That's about 8/9 years after her first step of becoming an idol. She's still going, even after all the stuff she's been through. This is why I love her

The fact the Iz*One disbanded over a year ago and Lee Chaeyeon still hasn't debuted as a soloist/in a new group is absolutely insane! I hope she there is some news soon about her future as an idol! She is an all-rounder and is one of the best dancers of 4th gen.
