- Raising healthy chickens organically gives you the best chicken eggs on a homestead or in your backyard. There is nothing like a fresh organic egg! Learn how to ferment chicken food, how to keep chickens cool in the summer months and how to control chicken parasites and internal worms organically without the use of chemicals.
Basic Natural/Organic Chicken Feed Recipe
25 lbs organic wheat
25 lbs organic corn
25 lbs whole or split peas
5 lbs whole black oil sunflower seeds
1 lb flaxseed
0.5 lb premix minerals
1-2 cups each sea kelp, grit, fish meal, ground oyster shell, fresh herbs or your choice. examples: oregano, thyme, calendula, rosemary, mint, astragalus, comfrey, chamomile.

If you want to use city water that's chlorinated you can leave it open in the sun and the chlorine will evaporate in 24 hours

We lost our chicken run during the bushfires. For months we purchased herbs for them at the grocery store as we had lost everything grass and herbs that day. As a lot of the herbs grow so well for us during the summer months I dry herbs including our calendula all summer and winter so that they have their herbs every day of the year. When we rebuilt their coop we built the new enclosure around a water tank so that during the summer they can dirt bath alongside of the tank to help keep them cool. We replaced their coop with a resin garden shed installing polystyrene to the inside of the roof to help insulate from the cold of winter and the heat of summer. I purchased a solar fan which we installed inside at the roofline to push the hot air out of the coop all day. I pulled out the plastic window and installed mesh for airflow and built them an awning over the window to stop rain getting inside and using hole bits we drilled holes at the roofline of the walls for extra ventilation. We include dried cornflower as well in their feed and some flax seed and hemp seed to provide them with additional protein. We’ve recently placed currants and thornless blackberries into a raised bed along one of the walls so that they will have those berries during the summer this year and I grew an elderflower tree from a cutting we were given so that it has grown a canopy of shade for them in the run if they have to be locked in. Ive spent the past 14 months teaching myself how to grow them meal worms for protein as well. My husband says their eggs are the best they have ever been. My adult children tell me that we spoil our chickens way too much but as Ive said to the girls the chickens are my little family since everyone grew up and left home they became my empty nest project :)
Way to go! You are doing it all right! The rebuilding would be hard, but it certainly makes you think of how to improve! You didn’t loose your house from the fires did you?
And my animals have become my empty nest project as well. We always had them, but the addiction kinda took off 10 fold. 😅
@@Alisorganics no our house was damaged from the fire and our roof was burned. Every roof on our property was lost and had to be replaced. We lost our infrastructure ie water tanks, septic system, incoming power etc. We learned a lot from this experience and now have rebuilt one of our sheds to be fully battery powered and we’ve put on extra solar panels and installed a large battery to operate our house with back up generators. We had two 30,000 water tanks before the bushfire but we now have 70,000 litres all hooked up to sources that can run independently of the power grid so that we can fight to protect our home should it happen again. It’s been a journey to get back to this point.

@@Alisorganics it has definitely taught us how to be more resilient. We have a small caravan now so that if we find we are in that situation again and have to leave we have the ability to come back afterwards even if we lose the house and be able to stay on our property with our animals. Last time we ended up in a shed at the local airport and our dogs had to be tied up to a tractor to keep them safe and our poor chickens had to be kept in the enclosed cages as did the cat and our budgies, our gold fish had to live in a bucket for 8 days. Im never going through that again. We have modular fencing staked under the bed of the caravan so that if we had to come back to nothing at least our animals will be able to cared for in a better situation than last time. You kind of don’t think about anything other than grabbing everyone and getting out but coming back and finding their coop burned down etc and then trying to work out where they would sleep and be safe wasn’t even a thought until it happened.

What kind of sand do you use for the dust bath? Any dirt? Thx!
This is just some local sand. I’ve used sand from the creek banks, washes and even some bagged play sand. You can use any type of sand.
I keep hearing about feeding herbs to chickens but mine won’t eat them.
@@Alisorganicsgood to know! I’ve read that play sand is too large and the sand has to be a certain grit, and then went to the hardware store and exhausted myself over which grit of sand to get 😅

@@belindamanis3431we now introduce herbs to our chicks from day 1, and the chicks that hatch on farm are born into a nest full of herbs and rose petals. The ones that didn’t get herbs from the start are more picky. Keep adding them in and they’ll get used to them. Even having them brush against them or walk on them helps release the volatile oils and can be beneficial 💚
I have learned so much from your videos, they are solid, straight to the point and informative. Thank you! Would you be willing to share the brand of your preblended feed? It can be so confusing knowing what to feed them. Mine are still pullets and free range and get their crumble with some scratch but I feel like I want to give them a good solid feed with grains.
Yes! I use Modesto Milling Feed. They have everything. It’s wonderful feed. We order in pallets for our store and saves in shipping.

I finally made the step to get five chickens this year! My girls are 6 weeks old. What is the brand of pre-blended organic chicken feed you use? I’ve been using a commercial blend from our local farm store, but I’d like to try the pre-blend you showed.
I just put in some raised garden beds this year, and I plan to add more next year. I plant to incorporate some of these plants!

Ali, have you used a sun oven or freeze dryer? If so, what are your recommendations? Thank you for your videos.
I have used a sun oven to cook roast and meatloaf and it worked very well. We bought the sun oven so long ago I'm not sure what brand it is. Hi, how do you feed garlic to your livestock ?
I’ll crush the garlic up over their feed. My goats didn’t eat it at first, they would push it around their grain and now they eat it without hesitation other than one doe. Miss picky pants! I have to put a clove in some peanut butter rolled in oats.
