The over reliance on touch screens in modern cars is currently my least favorite trend. Dedicated, physical buttons/dials are an absolute must. Especially for things like climate controls, driver assist features, turn signals, etc. Nobody likes swiping through unresponsive touch screens in the cold just so you can turn on your heated seats.
I really don't understand why auto makers go out of their way to make the driver experience so awful by removing physical buttons & controls and using haptic buttons. While not everything needs to be a button or dial, stuff like aircon, defogging, volume absolutely should be. Stuff that is used frequently should not be buried in a touch screen when it is clearly not safe for a driver to take their eyes off the road to find and use it.
The Tesla effect, Teslas are absolutely horrendous ergonomically, have low build quality and material quality, have nothing in their dashboards except a big screen in the middle. Yet journalists doesn’t seem to mind. Best car ever they say. Yet if the same thing is done in ICE cars or even EVs from other carmakers, they will go nuts.
It's cheaper. Some accountant proposed this idea, so they can lower the cost of production , they save millions of pounds in the process, charge the same and the savings go to the CEO's as a bonus in the process (because they charge the same, or even more for the new one).
Typical JLR. Just as other manufacturers start to accept the problem and start fitting physical controls again, JLR decide to remove them for a sh!tty all-on-one screen interface.
It just blew my mind when i saw the climate controls on the first car. The rotating knobs integrated into the screen looked so sleek and futuristic and matched the gear selector, the new one is the biggest downgrade of all time.
The older interior had more of a sense of occasion about it . The tilting upper screen , the dual function climate/seat controls , the split upper and lower graphics which changed depending what driving mode you were in . The shifter that rose from out of the centre console , the hidden cup holder that appeared when you pressed the land rover logo . This one is just dull.
I honestly like the older versions exterior and infotainment system/ interior layout over the new car!! Just about every aspect of the pre facelifted car looks better in my opinion. It’s pretty crazy that they gave the Velar a facelift and update, yet somehow managed to make almost every aspect of the new car WORSE than the previous version of the car!!!!
Totally agree about the interior update, it’s not good. It looks and feels more like a cost cutting change than anything else. Cheap plastics, bland design and no cup holder covers at key touch points for both driver and passenger = poor. I went to my local dealer to check out for my next car, but I’m pretty disappointed.
It's honestly so damn unbelievable and frustraing that every 200€ phone has better perfomance and better UI than the infotainment of every car there is from cheap up to very expensive.
If JLR's aim was to create a range of rovers that nobody could tell apart from one another then my hat is off to them. They have done this masterfully.

It’s a huge stepdown compared to the original Velar. JLR made some aggresive cost cuttings in the interior. New centre console looks horribly cheap for a luxury suv.
The most important question is, when they are gonna improve the reliability of their vehicles? Making exterior ad interior changes ain't cutting it no more!
Disappointed with the direction Land Rover has chosen to take with their future models. No rising gear selector, no electronically tilting dual screens, no 3D effect for the LED tail lights, no physical dials, full touchscreen climate controls, car settings buried deep in the touchscreen and more. This is clear and simple cost cutting by Land Rover. In my personal opinion the Velar has lost its "special" feeling which the original 2017 model exudes in abundance. There are no unique touches, no rotary dials which change based on the menu one is in, no Land Rover badge which opens a hidden cupholder, no screen which can be be adjusted for tilt angle. The sense of occasion has been irrevocably lost. Now it's like any other car, with a huge iPad stuck onto the dash, which apart from being curved is not even integrated properly with the dashboard.
Another great review! But, your quote "I can't even remember where it is" 😂regarding the infotainment system, says it all for me. The complex useability and experience would be a huge 'No' for me and probably many others looking to upgrade.
The thing is with all cars, 90% of features work as learned behavior. If you own the car and you use a feature more than a couple of times, you know exactly how to operate it. Therefore there is a lot on inconsistency between reviews of other cars which have been reviewed much more often or used as long term cars where journalists are much more familiar with how they work.
The review also hasn't been tested correctly. You can use the talk button on your steering wheel and ask it to do something for example set temperature to 20 and it will adjust the temperature for you therefore you don't need to use the screen. If you want to touch the screen you can just slide it up and down depending on how hot or cold you want it. There is also a short cut button on the steering wheel you can set for example heated seats. It's extremely easy to use and the effect of no buttons has been completely over exaggerated !
Agree with the two comments. Sat in one at a dealer getting my 2012 LR4 serviced (no, it wasn't broken, 105k mile standard service) and within 30 minutes I had most functions figured out within the system. While I was a strong supporter of separate temp dials, I actually started to like this system. And I saw the short cut button and was going to configure it for AC but the salesman caught me and politely commented I might not want to do that on the floor model 😂 Anyway, I liked the screen and layout more than I thought I would. The nav screen was really nice - bright, responsive, 3D version was adjustable so you could pull the horizon up or down - nice. Also, the center console armrests slide forward to cover the cup holders, so completely negates that comment.
I have a 240 D HSE. I hate the new interior which is just cost cutting by JLR. The previous arrangement was much better with the rotary gear selector rising up and the additional cup holder revealed but pressing the Land Rover button. If I have a criticism of my car it would be the weighting of the rotary dials on the lower screen .
I find it funny how there's the notion that big cars need big wheels to fill up the arches, when in fact big rims only became a thing because performance cars need bigger brakes, and those don't fit in small rims. That 21" rear wheel with those tiny brakes look awkward.
Just for this reason, owning a Toyota in the same segment makes me feel happier than owning a Range Rover. I think they are made untrustworthy on purpose to defraud pop culture people.
In case anyone is interested apart from the nerds amongst us, Velar is derived from the Latin velum (veiled) and was used in the 60s as the name for the new vehicle being developed by Land Rover. Nerd mode off. My mate's Dad worked for Land Rover in Solihull and he had use of a pre-launch test mule (prototype) in white. It had removable rubber mats and no carpet, so you could hose it out. Ground breaking vehicle in it's day, now ruined by excessive electronics, leather, carpet and crap styling.
Reliability on this will be interesting considering what I've heard about my mate's one. Hope to review it soon but if they break, good luck getting parts!
I always liked RRs and still do, but the interior is a serious disappointment to me. The old one was cumbersome and slow (something the new gen does not seem to improve on) but it was way nicer and definitely classier, which let's face it, RR is all about class. So much so, that had I been able to actually afford one, that could well end up being a dealbreaker for me. Just has that 90s budget car vibe to me.,
The A/C and Drive Mode selector are easier to use than what he’s showing. You can slide the temp up and down to quickly change it. Same with the drive mode
I'm 32 & have a 2023 RS5 Vorsprung coupe £1400 with 4 yrs no claims & I live in a nice area with virtually zero crime. I can't imagine how much 20-somethings have to pay to drive something nice!
Why you always forget to talk about ambient lighting... This is something that is missing from land rovers and for a lot of people is a must at night driving ❤
Bring back physical buttons for certain functions where drivers can do some adjustment without taking their eyes off the road. And touch sensitive button is lifeless. Mat did make very good points when he mentioned the driver have responsibility to the passangers.
It’s a shame, so many car manufacturers are ruining the driving experience, by replacing the easy accessible controls and putting them into the infotainment screen. I am very pleased, I don’t have that problem with my Nissan Qashqai Tekna +. What I don’t have physical buttons and knobs for, voice activation takes care of. 🙂
ALWAYS GET ONE WITH A WARRANTY! This is the first car - Range Rover Sport l494 that I had to replace 2 engine blocks due to 2 completely different issues. Thank god for the warranty, but my car was not even that high mileage, not to mention that it was driven mostly on long trips with my family and well maintained. They also have issues on almost all of their engines, mine is 3.0 SDV6, but the petrol ones have issues too. I think that only the 4.4l Diesel is good, but I'm not sure if it's even still on sale.
I rented this car with 3.0d for a week through SIXT Germany. The comfort is Superb. The info system is a little complicated, especially the heating, and AC settings.
I own a 2023 BMW X3 m40i and im almost positive the trunk space is 550 liters. I think the only way it becomes 450 liters is if you get the add on optional non run flat tires and decide to get the full size spare tire. Most X3's will get the full trunk space (550 liters) since runflats come standard.
Was that a Lotus Electre out in the open world at 19:09? If so, you should be reviewing that Matt... Or, you were recording with it as well on that day 🤔
Beautiful car but putting all contols to flimsy tablet screen is a big mistake. Going through menus while driving with winter gloves on is just impossible.
Probably the thing I hate most in modern cars is the trend of hiding every possible control behind complicated menus on a touchscreen system. If there hasn't been any already, I await the first serious accidents caused by distracted drivers trying to navigate over complicated touchscreens built in to their cars.
Apparently the Daily Telegraph found just two insurers willing to cover a Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic in London, with an average annual premium coming in at £22,515 ($27,770)..... so even if the new ones have better security vs non-existent, they're pretty much un-insurable.
Just a question regarding comparing this car to the BMW X3...is this not more in line with an X5? I always thought it was, or have I got my sizes mixed up?
I'm with you on getting rid of the rotary controls; they were a high-quality touch point and really easy to use. Ergonomically the new 'human-machine interface' is just worse. But the driver's screen is also really easy to use after a quick read of the handbook.

Miss the off road challenges, would be fun with non suv - 4WD cars too 😊
I though Mat said the next upload is going to be another really cool cybertruck drag race after the last drag race? All good, I am happy to see another regular car get reviewed and it actually be a great one as well. Save the "not want to miss" video for Saturday. Looking forward!!!
I have the old one, I’m keeping it for another 4-5 years
How has it been in terms of reliability ?
@@thehood8203 just two issues, laggy user interface and massage function failed in the front driver’s seat
Alright am considering getting one so I appreciate the owners review
@@thehood8203 depends on the engine in terms of reliability. Avoid the 2.0L diesels.
I used to work at the factory in Solihull where they make these. I helped launch the 1st gen of velar. Sad times 😢
???
Were all employees told they have to build unreliable cars?
I had the Velar a couple years ago and I still miss this car. Maybe I will come back some day
Disappointed with the direction Land Rover has chosen to take with their future models.
Nice review! Looking forward to your next video!
Bravo, an honest review of a British car from a British reviewer. Top Gear would have made it look like it was the best car, in the world 😜
It's not a British car brand actually, It's an Indian car brand as TATA motors bought Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008.
Love the integrity and the farness, good job man
Another great review!
I like the shape and design of the velar alot, I will buy one day 😂
Be ready to pay up for maintenance though
Excellent review Mat!
I find it funny how there's the notion that big cars need big wheels to fill up the arches, when in fact big rims only became a thing because performance cars need bigger brakes, and those don't fit in small rims. That 21" rear wheel with those tiny brakes look awkward.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I really don’t like the way ranges look. I think they are very overrated
@@Lennonryanmusici completly agree with u
And then they break down
@@wpjohn91 plus stupid insurance premiums
@@amitpatel1121so bloody easy to steal to relieve you from the mechanical bills
I love the range rover design so much. Shame that they are very expensive to maintain
Just for this reason, owning a Toyota in the same segment makes me feel happier than owning a Range Rover. I think they are made untrustworthy on purpose to defraud pop culture people.
Love the review Mat ❤
What wonderful review!👏👏
Prefer the older Velar, which is now very good value as nobody can insure them.
No they are cheap because of their problems
Now race it against the cyber truck!
19:09 did I just see a Lotus eletre in the background?🤔
Hope to review it soon but if they break, good luck getting parts!
you can swipe the volume and temperature up and down directly from the home screen, even though I also prefer the older layout.
The pre face lift is the better model and the real deal!😅
The only thing that matter is if they ACTUALLY improved reliability. If they did it'll sell, if they didn't it won't.
Just has that 90s budget car vibe to me.,
You forgot the stick. I understand why!!😂😂😂
Let's make the same car, just change the interior then call it new and we're going to charge you more for it. Pretty smart! 👏🏾 👏🏾
It’s a mid life update, not a new car. Also the prices are better
No one is calling it a new car.
thats what the Germans do, new bmw 5 series has cheap plastic look
The A/C and Drive Mode selector are easier to use than what he’s showing. You can slide the temp up and down to quickly change it. Same with the drive mode
Those wiper blades will break 😂 along with everything else
lol its not a bmw
@@Lemingtona-x5gbmw's are a bit more reliable
Mat review is amazing 👍
Lexus Nx is a totally different level of quality. Built to last and this is the opposite.
Basically paying to drive ‘Range Rover’ name. Until it breaks down in a few years and becomes too expensive to repair.
👎
Thank you always as always Matt. Where did you buy your green military long sleeve sweater? Thank you.
Whether you can insure it is another thing !!!
I'm 32 & have a 2023 RS5 Vorsprung coupe £1400 with 4 yrs no claims & I live in a nice area with virtually zero crime. I can't imagine how much 20-somethings have to pay to drive something nice!
The previous model still had the RANGE ROVER badge on the rear, not LAND ROVER as you are saying...
Update looks simply like an exercise in saving money and making more profit for Land Rover…… 🤔
Why you always forget to talk about ambient lighting... This is something that is missing from land rovers and for a lot of people is a must at night driving ❤
This rover is very elegant inside, interior.
I cant believe i lusted over this car. Definitely made the right move staying in the Volvo/Polestar family.
that range rover pullout joke killed me 🤣
Bring back physical buttons for certain functions where drivers can do some adjustment without taking their eyes off the road. And touch sensitive button is lifeless.
Mat did make very good points when he mentioned the driver have responsibility to the passangers.
The sooner there’s legislation to reverse controls being embedded in layers of screens the better. Agree with you, the pre update was better interior.
Brilliant review Mat...
I think at this point car manufacturers, who keep the headlights washes and don't cut costs on that, deserve a praise.
For me, it is such a beautiful design! Out of my range though 😢
I love the way you incorporate reviews with fun iam a carwow addict for sure😊
What about reliability of ingenium diesels? Do they still broke apart before 100t km?
I own a 2023 BMW X3 m40i and im almost positive the trunk space is 550 liters. I think the only way it becomes 450 liters is if you get the add on optional non run flat tires and decide to get the full size spare tire. Most X3's will get the full trunk space (550 liters) since runflats come standard.
Have they fixed the security problem tho ?
19:13 noice greeny Lotus Eletre in the back 👀
Was that a Lotus Electre out in the open world at 19:09? If so, you should be reviewing that Matt... Or, you were recording with it as well on that day 🤔
Wait Mat, whats that green car at 19.09? Can't recognize it. Probably most interesting part of this review 😁
Ahhh a good old fashioned carwow review 😊
Beautiful car but putting all contols to flimsy tablet screen is a big mistake. Going through menus while driving with winter gloves on is just impossible.
Certainly better looking than any other German suv.
The first Generation Velar paved the way for the current designs of Range Rover
Cant believe youre not yeeting the load covers anymore
Probably the thing I hate most in modern cars is the trend of hiding every possible control behind complicated menus on a touchscreen system. If there hasn't been any already, I await the first serious accidents caused by distracted drivers trying to navigate over complicated touchscreens built in to their cars.
Apparently the Daily Telegraph found just two insurers willing to cover a Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic in London, with an average annual premium coming in at £22,515 ($27,770)..... so even if the new ones have better security vs non-existent, they're pretty much un-insurable.
Carwow reviews is always entertaining
I prefer the old interior
Just a question regarding comparing this car to the BMW X3...is this not more in line with an X5? I always thought it was, or have I got my sizes mixed up?
Mat Is That Kind Of A Guy Who Can Mess Around Stuffs In Any Car, No Matter It's A Range Rover Or A Bugatti, Without Bothering A Bit! 😂
I'm with you on getting rid of the rotary controls; they were a high-quality touch point and really easy to use. Ergonomically the new 'human-machine interface' is just worse. But the driver's screen is also really easy to use after a quick read of the handbook.
There is a tonne of Velar models on the Aussie market now at very low Kms. What is wring with them to make the buyers sell them so quickly?
