I remember when you didn't even want to paint it. The paint job you did exceeded all of my expectations. You did a fine job, and it's gonna serve its purpose of protecting that machine for many more years. It looks just as good as any other non-factory paint job on heavy machinery, including a socially distant paint job another Matt did on a grader.
It's gotta feel good knowing the first run is just around the corner.

It has been a long road, but your persistence has paid off and the end of the project is in sight. My hat is off to you for sticking with the rebuild. I'm eager to see it move and then move some dirt.

Matt. You do realize you are going to be rebuilding heavy equipment for the rest of your life. I have the feeling you don't have a problem with that. 😀 You have so much, set up, for the future. Seeing this run will be super awesome. The excavator is like wow. Yes. First things first. This is a lot of work. I think you love it. I know you do. Thank you for documenting it for those of us who don't have the room to do it. I am sure your videos will generate enough revenue where you can hire a painter. I also hate painting. Thanks, Matt!

Wow. A man, a 2000lb engine hoist, and a 1950 CAT D4. I came across this channel the other day, and I've spent the last 3 days of my life binge watching the 40 videos on this project. Extremely entertaining. Matt, you do love a challenge! I admire your positive attitude and the ability to persevere through it all. Well done my friend! I can't wait to see it move dirt!

Before you install the rad you might want to put on the fan belt because of the pump shift will haft to come off if you're rad is on nice job on the D4.

Matt, on camera it looks friggin AWESOME!!!. Remember when you were working out whether to paint it or leave it? I voted for you to leave it and I based that on, I don't know you, didn't know your skill level, and if you half assed it like most do, it would would have looked terrible. I take it back and I'm really glad you did paint it. You did it really well, you obviously researched what you were doing, and as we all know now, you don't half ass anything, maybe within reason but this brings me to my next point. You also don't go the opposite way and tried to make it look absolutely perfect either which could have been another fail. It is, what it is, and it is a piece of industrial equipment, and throughout this whole journey you have kept that right in mind. Great job Matt. I really hope you take us with you with all the others projects i.e. excavator and your 240Z.
Oh and there was a little bit of being hard on yourself for overthinking it which comes through on all your vids. Overthinking something only costs time and it's your time to do with what you want. It's not like all your doing is thinking about doing something, look what you have achieved!!! Matt I would say you have the exact right balance of thinking and doing.

  • @danielpullum1907

Well Done Matt~! You have done Caterpillar proud. Cat had to drop the Highway Yellow for environmental issues. I was supervising in the paint area at the Decatur Plant when that happened. It was "blow" to all of us. The new color looked like "mud". We used airless spray at 2500psi and used a lot of paint. We ran the paint line two shifts and painted about 20 machines on each shift. There was a prime paint line and a finish paint line with a downdraft ventilation system. Both lines had a pit with an elevator so the painters could paint the bottoms of the machines. The pits were not a favorite place to work.
The painter's favorite trick was to get somebody to point out a "shy paint" area and when the pigeon got close to point out the spot, the painter would paint their shoes. LOOOL!!!!!
You should take pictures and send them to the Caterpillar Museum and Vistor's Center in Peoria. They post pictures of machines and you have thousands to show the before and after.

You will only scratch it anyway so don't beat yourself up about it , my boss spent $5000 on a paint job on a d4 we rebuilt and 12 months later it's scratched and dented and looks like it was never done, ok yes the operator is rough on it but he's doing what it's designed for, I think you have done a great job on it and have definitely given it another 30 yrs of service ahead of it, great work especially in showing a few tricks to make it easier for people doing a full rebuild

Been watching you rebuild this machine for a long time and cain't wait for you to get it
started and running again. Hate to see machines thrown on the junk heap when they still have life and purpose in them. Might not work as well as a modern new machine but for the purpose your have in mind it is much cheaper and better for your needs and should give you a lifetime of satisfaction and service. Keep up the good work.

I hope that it was worth all of your time and money. I wish that you had a friend there to help you with the engine. I used to paint ground equipment in the Air Force and you did a good job. We used to say, at 30,000 feet I do not think the piolet is thinking about the paint job. None the less the logic was that a good looking jet is taken better care of. Matt, I know it's a little late for this but, you could have solved your dent problem with that fuel tank by welding a 3/16" plate to the back of the tank. Kind of like a slip cover. I know it was more trouble than it was worth trying remove the dents. But just covering them up would have been quick and simple. You can still do that before you get to the decals. And no one would ever be able to tell. A few bucks worth of steel, and a couple of hours worth of welding.

You did a really good job for a beginner. KUDOS if you intend to paint the 240. Keep the gun 10- 12 inches away from the car. The fan will give you better atomization and lesson the possibility of runs. You can do all three coats in one effort. A light coat to give adhesion and light coverage wait 15 - 20 for paint to flash and then shoot it again. You can generally tell when it has started to set up by touching your masking tape to check for tackiness.

I was taught by an old body man to thin using a drip count. Stir and pull the stick out and start counting as fast as you can with out slurring the numbers until the paint turns from a stream to a drip. For acrylic lacquer it was about 18 which was good. Establishing a count for your paint would help you be consistent with batches.
