    Don’t let anyone talk you down man, you are doin’ great. That is a big , expensive project you have undertaken. Being a Cat nearly every part is available and there are support groups for Cat guys. Hope your finger is healing up well. Love your shop area.

    watching other people on youtube rescuing old Cat machines that have been sitting a long time have the exact same experience. Dont worry too much, just strip it down, inspect and overhaul all the bearings. Only big chunks of metal damage gears unless a machine has been run with fully collapsed bearings. Keep at it.

    This is a great series because I can relate to knowing nothing about these machines. Your patience and willingness to dive in without any four letter words is inspiring! Really. From watching all the Squatch vids it looks like the ability to obtain or concoct some essential specialty tools will be key. Good luck, God speed, and I hope the fires stay away or better yet, go away.

    Very nice shop to work in! The new lights will help you with all your projects. This one is going to be a big one. Now if the wife does not get to pushing you to clean all that up. You will get the shop a lot more messed up before the end. Like you I like to clean some of it up as I go. When your finally get it finished you will have quite a work horse to use there on your farm. If you have room you can even build a small pond and even use to make money for neighbors. Most farms can always use a couple hours of dozer work. I watch your amount of viewers and it is growing, maybe that will help offset the cost of your project. Love your videos, keep up the good work. Oh, pat you dog on the head for me, I love dogs, a mans best friend.

    what you have there is an Elephant in the Kitchen - and how do you eat an Elephant? One manageable bite at a time! This is the part where you are assessing all the ingredients and giving it the ole sniff and eye test to see what's good - what is rotten - and what is also good but just may need the crust, mold, cleaned off of it. Don't give up - keep going - one bite at a time!

    Hang in there. I have never done anything like a tractor, but rebuilt my first Chevy 327 motor last winter and I didn't know what I was doing. I learned so much from friends and TH-cam it came out great and runs well. It's well worth the adventure and learning no matter the outcome. I love watching and especially how you resolve problems (even if not the best way) especially since you are by yourself. I have the same situation, always trying to figure out how to do something by myself when another set of hands would make it easy. Love your videos.

    You’re gonna know everything there is to know by the time you’re done. What a great fun project. I’m jealous. I was a little kid riding on a D4 like that in the fifties at the construction company where my mom was the bookkeeper. The men took me on it all the time. I even got to pull the clutch on the pony motor to fire the diesel. You were lucky to find this gem.

    D-4 is a decent tractor. Friction systems (clutches) and big ol shafts/gears. They don't make anything like this anymore. As long as you can afford the parts (used or new) and feel comfy polishing and buffing gears, you're prolly OK. Water in all the cases means it's all gotta be flushed. Should come apart, but that is a huge job. One system at a time may get you through it ... You'll have well north of $10K in it if you want it all correct and "work every day" reliable. If you can live with barely OK, maybe less $$ ...

    The steering clutch drains are both draining the same compartment, that is why you got more out of the first one. If you did not have the winch there are inspection covers that you can get in there. My recent auction D4 had a lot of oil and water in there. I washed it out with gas and drained it and everything works ok so far.
    I would not be in a big rush to pull the engine, you may be able to repair it in place.

    • @PacificNorthwestHillbilly
      @PacificNorthwestHillbilly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the tip on the clutches, didn't know that. The engine is coated in rust scale in the crank case and it's all flaking off and will turn into sludge. The rods, cams, crank, etc, all need to be cleaned up.

    I would have invested in trying to start it 1st at least get it to turn over, then changed all the fluids then tried to start it..before pulling the head, and everything you have done..that's me..I would want to know if the motor was good. Usually these old motors will easily crank or try after sitting. You are going to have a lot of time invested before you know if it'll even turn over. But your figuring it out..
