    Next disaster: Dog chews on smoke alarm, starting a battery fire.

    That's something I never would have thought a dog would chew on. Shoes, yeah. Pencils & books, yep. Battery pack chargers, nope. Opened my eyes, you did. Thank you.

      That's why you train your dog to only chew on one or two very specific toy items, and that even sniffing around any other item gets them heavily scolded. If my dog can distinguish between an empty plastic bottle resting horizontally on the yard's floor (toy) and a vertical bottle carefully placed by the house's wall (not toy), then any dog can learn that electronic devices are NOT TOYS, but tennis balls are TOYS. The objects I just named have nothing in common; not shape, not material, not even smell, unlike the two empty bottles I provided as an example. TEACH YOUR DOGS TO LIVE IN HUMAN SOCIETY.

    Smoke alarms don't last forever, they have a 10-year life span. Check the date of manufacture. If more than 10 years it must be replaced. If there is no date, it's more than 10 years old. When replacing smoke alarms consider inter connected smoke alarms, hard-wired or wireless. When one sounds, they all sound.

    Could you go into detail about smoke detectors for the home?
    I know enough to use Photoelectric ones, but I've had a heck of a time with the First Alert "10 year" models going into full alarm in the middle of the night due to low batteries. With it being a permanent battery, and this happening at 3am, it's real fun to get it off the ceiling and find a way to shut it up. There's a switch on the back but it's blocked by a piece of plastic. At 3am, I found a hammer worked wonderfully.

      True that.
      Those were sold under many brands.
      I had the interconnected ones and replaced them multiple times and even switched brands. All of them failed within less than 2 years.
      Often the first cold night all of them would suddenly go off and wake up the whole building.
      Usually the one in the attic was to blame.
      Sometimes I got lucky and one of them started to do the low battery beep which then got repeated by the connected ones. You physically needed to remove the rf unit from the 'dead' one to stop the rest from beeping.

      3am seems to be the time for those!
      My neighbour's First Alert alarm started about that time. They'd left a week earlier to work abroad for 2 years!
      Before the next night we tracked down the parents who got in & stopped the alarm, that had been going for 18 hours.
      It was a First Alert alarm that was only about 3 years into its 10 year battery.

    Primary issue with appliances today, is partly due to getting rid of good old knobs in favor of capacitive touch controls. Because they simplify design, in the sense a single chip could easily provide a dozen channels, and the microcontroller just needs two wires with power. Even a slight brush on the surface turns them on, unless you explicitly use the child lock. Releasing the child lock is another issue😅.

    Check/change your smoke alarm batteries before the summer holiday. That way you are sure someone outside will hear them in case of a fire and not in case of an empty battery. This makes it a regular interval and even if you do forget and remember while traveling, you can put a reminder on the home keys, inside your passport or in a suitcase to do it as soon as you get back.

  • @anomamos9095
    @anomamos9095 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The number one reason smoke alarms get left disabled is the number of times they go off for no apparent reason.
    Unfortunately some tiny insects looking for food or a home trigger these alarms. Use of repellent and long life bug spray can reduce the instances of this.

    I wanted to put a wired smoke detector in my new sunroom we are building. Had to take it out because I’d have to tear out the ceiling up to another smoke detector in the house because code says it has to be connected to another smoke alarm. What was optional was having a smoke detector in that room in the first place what the code said… so to save the hassle and huge extra cost we can’t have one wired in… makes no sense.

    Dogs jumping on the stove to snatch things from the counter/stovetop and accidentally turning burners on in the process wouldn't be as much of an issue with old-school style stoves where knobs are located on the console head all the way in the back against the wall instead of the front where anything can brush against them and turn them on.

    My biggest fear is my cat jumping on my induction cooker control. However it is so hard to unlock that cooker that I can hardly do it myself.
    And if it is on, nothing is wrong *unless* you keep your pans on the cooker. Only the electronics might not like it if you let them on for days without a load.
    I've tried reporting the hazardous ATAG induction cooker that had a software bug that could turn it back on if you put it on child lock. After some hassle with ATAG where I needed to use legal help, the repair person of ATAG concluded the same: it turns on again and is hazardous. But his order was to just give me a new one and keep me quiet.
    Nobody cared about ATAG ignoring my bug reports.
    Personally I alread knew when it was turned on again, because you can hear the hum and when tested with pan you could hear it.
    But yes: 2 brand new ATAG induction cookers, same software bug, big fire hazard. Nobody was interested, not even my legal insurance.

    • @alanm8932
      @alanm8932 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's unlikely you can leave it on for days.
      I'm pretty sure my "smeg" hob turns off if no controls are touched for 2 hours. Although if your cat comes back & dances on the controls every hour or two, I guess it's possible.
      I haven't looked at the instructions for about 5 years, so it's just possible I'm wrong about the 2 hours. I was checking the instructions to get the lock to be "On" by default, to cat proof it!
      She can still start the hob timer even when it's locked.

    alright Captain throw on your SCBA, we've finally got the fire event many have been waiting on (i've personally been counting the days on my fingers). to that end much like the massive shut down on the I-15 between LA and Vegas from a crash and burn of a BESS on Friday 7-26-24, yesterday Monday 8-19-24 there was massive shut down on I-80 in NorCal from a crash and burn of a Tesla Semi...
    (although short range prototypes are being tested) it was quite possibly one of the ginormous 900 kWh long range models, so basically a "BESS on wheels". now whether it went into Thermal Runaway BEFORE the crash...? or as a RESULT of the crash...? is currently unknown, although the "doggos" probably DO know because as seen in video after video, they clearly have a "primordial 6th sense" about the DANGERS posed by Li-Ion battery fires (same as animals do with fire in general) that we Humans Beings DO NOT seem to have any longer.
